Author's note: Just a bit of SJ fluff that came out when my muse finally decided to cooperate with me again...

"Do you ever get tired of this, Jack?" She found the words difficult to form between his kisses, but nonetheless, they had to be said.
"Of what?"
"This. This...hiding."
He moved away from her neck, where his lips had been slowly brushing her skin, and looked into her eyes, unsure of what his reply should be.
"I mean," she leaned her head forward from the wall they'd found themselves against only moments earlier to look him in the eyes, "when we're alone, when there's no one else to know, this thing we have...it's overwhelming. But only when the room is empty can we experience it." Noticing the look in his eyes, urging her to continue, she did. "Jack, I want to be able to walk past you in the corridor without looking away when everything within me wants to become lost in your eyes. I want to kiss you when you've said something particularly...Jack, and not have to wonder who might be watching."
He laughed slightly at her last description and brushed a strand of hair away from her face. "Me too, Sam. Me too." Gazing into the depths of the blue oceans in her eyes, he sighed. "But you know we can't."
She looked away and allowed a hand to linger on his chest, absently tracing tiny patterns onto his shirt. "I know that. I do." Returning her eyes to his, she added, "But there are times when I'd leave it all behind without a second thought."
"Sam," he traced a finger along the side of her face and allowed it to linger under her chin, "you're far too important to this planet—heck, to this galaxy—to have thoughts like that. If it weren't for you, we wouldn't be standing here right now. Here wouldn't even exist. And Earth isn't the only planet you've saved. Because of you, entire solar systems have evaded a slightly less glamorous fate."
She placed her other hand on his and held his fingers in contact with her skin. "I'd forget all of it for this. You mean more to me than any of that."
"And you mean more to me than you can ever know. But there are whole civilizations out there that need you. You can't give that up."
"I would."
He stroked the skin along her hairline. "And I would never ask you to." At that, she smiled slightly. "What?"
"Somehow, I knew you'd say that." She paused, remembering the events brought on by a concussion only months ago. "It's almost as if I've heard it before."
He smiled, having no idea what she meant, but he was content to see her happy. He kissed her again, softly, but as passionately as any before it, and allowed their lips to linger until the alarm sounded to alert them of an unscheduled off-world activation. With one last look, they parted, content to hold on to the feeling of each other that now filled the emptiness they had both known for far too long.
