"Oh, Paris!" Rory said. If Paris could blurt out her feelings, why couldn't she? It's probably just that she had to tell someone, and so she chooses me. I already told mom and Lane, do I really have to tell Paris too? Although she knew she should tell Paris about That Night, she decided to wait.

"Please don't pity me," Paris said." You know I hate pity." They continued to unpack in silence, until Rory couldn't handle it anymore.

"Well, have you found out your classes yet?" Rory said, trying desperately to break the silence.

"I have him first thing in the morning." Paris said. Rory didn't have to ask whom, she knew.

"You could try to change the class, or-"

"That would be backing down, Rory," Paris said fiercely." If there is one thing I hate more than pity, it's giving up. I will not give up to Professor Fleming." Is that why he broke up with you? Rory couldn't help but wondering. She regretted it immediately because she had always wondered if she had slept with Jess the night of the party where Jess and Dean got into a fight, if she did sleep with him, would he have left? But Jess was over. He came back right before she came back to Stars Hollow for the summer, and she clearly said no to him. It's just all these feeling getting mixed up, Rory decided, that's why I'm thinking of Jess.

Later, in the afternoon, as she was walking around campus, she thought, why did I wait all summer for Dean to talk to me? Why didn't I go up and talk to him? Sure, he didn't make it easy, but I bet I could have. And so she decided to call him. Then she decided out of it. He hates me, she thought, that's why he didn't call back. I'm a reminder of his cheating on his beloved Lindsay, who doesn't even deserve him.

Instead she called her best friend, Lane. Lane could always cheer her up. She dialed. One, two, three rings, and then finally Lane answered." Hello? Rory?"

"Hey Lane! I was just calling to see if we could, y'know, chat." Rory said. Hopefully they could be halfway through a conversation without talking about Dean.

"I'm not going to be your dean-update, Rory," Lane said and then hung up. How dare she? I never said I wanted that! Although, secretly, she knew Lane was right. She wanted to see if there was any chance Dean would come back to her. Did That Night really mean nothing to him? Because it meant everything to her.
