One, two. The rhythm his heart had adopted eons ago had never been heard so clearly. Ever since the day. "I want to leave." Lightly, lovingly. Firmly. No 'what if's.
He had lifted his eyes. His words had suddenly been drained of power when he had heard the voice, more so when he had seen the face. So he had said nothing, trying in vain to swallow the ice freezing his throat, so it would've resided in its once usual place.
One, two. One day to come to a decision. Two days to tune the complex clockwork of the temple, to assure growth of the seeds planted. He could learn from the mistakes that hadn't been his. Undoubtedly not his.
One, two. Hakkai picked up his bag and took two steps to the door. It wasn't hard, since Sanzo was standing on the way.
He hated to repeat himself, so he simply put his hands on Hakkai's shoulders, attempting to channel all the unsaid 'I don't want you to's and 'I can't make you to's through a tender triviality of a kiss. And the other words, they…
Hakkai's hands rose to move along their favourite route over his body. His fingers came across the gun under the robes, in the same place where Sanzo had kept it in the days of the journey, more a reflex than a memory. Hakkai pulled away for a small intake of breath, but then proceeded to gently read answers from Sanzo's lips, eyes closed, like that was indeed all there was to it.
They didn't have to be said again, the other words.
One, two.
He felt the revolver was abnormally light, not a full round loaded; but it meant no danger now.
He felt abnormally calm. Worries didn't dare to follow him over the point of no return.
After all, the world had never been enough to live for.
And he himself was not enough anymore.
