Note: Thanks for reviewing. A bit of angst for this chapter. Oh well. Writing angst isn't really my thing. Now I feel so depressed... Must have some more sugar! *get sugar high* Wheee! Now on with the story.

Chapter III: Decision

Dark clouds shrouded the bright moon, shadowing the vision as nocturnal birds cooed with piercing sound, flapping their proud wings. Yet it did not matter. Nothing was mattered. For their eyes still locked, separating them completely from the surrounding, their sense of hearing limited to each other's breathing and heartbeat that seemed to quicken every second passed. The little gap between them was being closed little by little as the older Uchiha drew nearer and nearer...

Night breeze blew across the area, plucking more of those heart-shaped sakura petals into the water. "It's past your bedtime already, little one." Itachi whispered into the younger boy's ear, picking away the pink petal that happened to fall onto his brother's soft hair. Before Sasuke could say or do anything, he gathered the younger Uchiha in his arms--one arm going behind his back and the other underneath his bent legs. So easily as if the boy in his arms weighed nothing.

The older boy brushed away the untidy strands from his little brother's face. The little boy looked so peaceful sleeping. A little smile crossed the older one's lips. "Sleep well, Otouto." And he placed a gentle kiss on the boy's forehead before turning to leave.

"Wha-" The younger one blushed. "I'm not-"

The little boy lifted one of his eyelids, his small hand quickly grabbed his big brother's sleeve. "Don't go. I don't want you to go." His big brother turned and scooped him into his arms. "It's already past your bedtime, little one. Now go back to sleep. When you wake up, I'll still be here." The little boy looked at his brother, hesitated to let go. "Promise?" The older one nodded. "Promise."

Sasuke stopped protesting mid-sentence as again memories entered his mind. Sighing deeply, he rest his head on Itachi's shoulder and let himself enjoy the familiar comfort. He felt tired.

And there was this strange feeling that kept bothering him.

He couldn't place it... He didn't know what it was... But he didn't want to think about it now that he was so tired. He would just let it slip for now. Sleepiness entered him yet he tried to stay awake, for he feared. He feared that when he woke up again... this Itachi, the caring big brother he loved so much would disappear. And they would again back to become enemies. And he would be back hating this man again. Still, as hard as he tried, he failed.

As sleepiness finally took over him, the words that hadn't left his lips for so long escaped him. "I miss you, Aniki." That, and the younger Uchiha fell into the realm of slumber.

Kakashi knelt down beside the body of a fallen Otogakure's shinobi, examining it carefully. The corpse had no physical wound yet the silver-grey haired jounin was sure the man was dead. He frowned, looking around the place. The chain had been cut. No sign of Orochimaru or his minions. Sasuke has already escaped? How?

His eyes darted back to the shinobi's corpse. No physical wound... It seemed the man had died from heart attack. He must have seen something so horrible. But what could have caused a man serving someone like Orochimaru a heart attack? Only horrible illusion caused from the Sharingan can do this... but Sasuke hasn't achieved that ability yet, has he? Then who else... The jounin's eyes widened as realization hit him. The only other Sharingan wielder apart from him and Sasuke, the other bloodline of the Uchiha clan...

Could it be...Itachi?

Clank!

The jounin almost jumped at the sudden sound. Almost. He quickly spun around.

"Oh shit!" The blond boy cursed himself for stupidly and accidentally stepped on a kunai. (which was, of course, Itachi's) He then turned to Kakashi. Scratching the back of his head, "Uhh...sensei, I didn't mean to..." he laughed dryly.

Naruto? I didn't even sense him following. The jounin thought, his posture relaxed a little. This boy... He looked at the boy who was still pulling a silly act thinking of an excuse. He shook his head slightly. Maybe I worried too much about Sasuke that I didn't sense him. The jounin's attention then went back to the corpse. But perhaps he can be of some help.

"Naruto."

"Eh?" The kitsune boy blinked, looking at his sensei. He was starting to regret coming after the jounin. Kakashi and his scary punishment. Gods helped him. Now I'm going to face it.

"Go back to the village and see if Sasuke was back there or not. If I do not return by the morning, report the Hokage." He wasn't going to scold or punish me? What a miracle! Naruto was happy with relief. His inner self was dancing and laughing with glee. But a moment later his eyes widened as the meaning of his sensei's command began to sink in. "What happened to Sasuke?" Naruto asked almost immediately.

"Just go. Now."

"But-"

"Naruto." A warning tone in Kakashi's voice prevented him from asking anymore question. Naruto hesitated but did what he was told.

Kakashi watched until the boy's back disappeared from his sight then looked back at the fallen shinobi. He bit his thumb, making it bleed and smeared the blood on the scroll he had taken out from his pocket. There was a puff of smoke as he cast a summoning spell. He would have to rely on his servant dogs' noses.

Itachi looked at his little brother's face as he slept soundlessly. So beautiful...so innocent... It was so hard, so painful trying to control himself last night. Do you have any idea how much I want you? His head had been filled with those forbidden fantasies that almost drove him mad. Yet he had to hold back, locking those desires in the darkest part of his mind, for he didn't want to hurt Sasuke more than what he had already done.

It was his weakness. It was his sin. Weakness for he couldn't stop himself from falling in love with the one he shouldn't. Sin for he had killed all of his own clan to fulfill his darkest desire. Yet that desire was unfulfilled. He didn't get what he wanted, for he couldn't bring himself to do such thing to his innocent brother. And he decided it was better that way. To let Sasuke go. To make Sasuke hate him. So his little brother wouldn't know the truth... and suffer more.

He had already crossed the line. Yet he had to admit he really enjoyed the previous night. It was like going back to those days. But he knew it couldn't be so forever. The sin he had committed was still there. It had marred his brother's innocence, destroying his happy childhood. It was his fault. It was his selfishness. It was his sin.

He had decided. He had to stop it now. Stop it before Sasuke stopped hating him. It would hurt. It really did. But it wouldn't hurt as much as letting the truth unfold. He would have to let go.

I love you, Aniki.

Love... Sasuke's love for him wasn't the same way he had for him. It had never been so. It would never be so.

I miss you, Aniki.

A bitter smile found its way to the older Uchiha's lips. As much as those words dampened his wounded spirit, it also made him want to cry. He didn't, though. He had never cried for so long that he forgot when was the last time he did so. His fingers gently traced his brother's long fine brows. "Forgive me, Sasuke." And he bent down, lightly touching his lips with the sleeping boy's in a fluid motion. The younger one stirred but didn't wake up. Itachi gave the boy one last glance before he left.

When he opened the front door, he was face to face with the silver-grey hair jounin. "It's really you." said the jounin, his voice barely above whisper.

"If you're looking for my little brother, he's in there." said Itachi, his face expressionless as he walked past the jounin, paying him no attention. The jounin remained silent. "No harm done." the older Uchiha then added.

"...Itachi." The silver-grey haired jounin said before Itachi could leave. "Why don't you tell him the truth?" That simple question made the indifferent Uchiha turned back to face him. Although Itachi's face showed no sign of change, his eyes sparkled dangerously. "What do you mean?" he asked, his voice low.

"You know what I mean. You are not blunt." The jounin stated truthfully, looking at him with both eyes.

Silence prevailed for while as the two of them gazed intesely at each other. "Mind your own business, Kakashi." Itachi finally said, breaking the silence.

"What you did was an act of a coward who tries to escape from the truth. You made him suffer." with that, the jounin disappeared behind the door.

Coward? Itachi mentally smirked. Ironically. You don't understand, Kakashi. You never will. Something warm and wet slid down his cheek. Itachi lifted one of his hands to feel what it was...

Tear?

~*~*~

Sasuke felt like crying. He felt so lost, so empty. Itachi was gone, leaving him on his own again. The event last night seemed like a dream and he would have believed so hadn't he woken up to find Itachi's cloak covering him. His scent was still there, reminding him that it was really the truth.

But sometimes a truth hurt people more than a lie.

Sasuke didn't know if he could still hate his brother. He didn't know if he could go on with his ambition to kill Itachi. And that strange feeling he had...as if...

Forgive me, Sasuke.

He raised a finger to his lips.

The doorknob clicked.

"Yo!" Kakashi stepped in, greeting him with his infamous greeting. "You should have told me that you missed your old home." The jounin said, folding his arms across his chest. Yet as much as the jounin tried to act good-naturedly, as if nothing had happened, Sasuke knew Kakashi had already known.

"Arigatou." the Uchiha boy uttered softly.

Kakashi raised an eyebrow. "What did you say, Sasuke-chan?" Sasuke swore that under that face cover Kakashi was grinning. He could see amusement lurk behind those eyes. Sasuke pouted and turned away. "Let's go back to the village already. I'm hungry."

Golden rays of sunlight pierced through the windows into the room. The bright light awaked the snoozing blond boy on the bed from his sweet dream. He yawned, stretched and finally got up. "Man, Sasuke's bed is much more softer than mine. Geeze... lucky bastard. He always has the best."

Naruto had come to Sasuke's apartment last night to check if the Uchiha boy had returned or not as Kakashi-sensei had told him. And he had fallen asleep...on his teammate's bed. Very nice. The kitsune boy took a little time to realize that it was morning and Sasuke wasn't back yet. So was Kakashi. He remembered what he was told to do.

He ran fast, ignoring everyone in the way. He had to report the Hokage. He ran, ran, and ran. And suddenly halted when he reached Ichiraku. The delicious smell coming from there made his mouth water. Although he was worried about his teammate, his roaring stomach took the best of him. Sure, Kakashi-sensei wouldn't mind if I had my breakfast first, right? Right? Naruto nodded to himself. Of course!!

And he didn't wait, taking an available seat there and ordered his favorite menu: miso ramen.

"Naruto." A familiar voice called from his left.

"Mmmm?" The blond boy voiced in reply but didn't turn. He was busy slurping down the noodle.

"Naruto." That voice called again. This time Naruto turned...and gasped. "S-sensei!"

Kakashi smiled. But it was an unfriendly smile. "I don't remember telling you to have ramen, did I?" Naruto felt like banging his head on the table. Now I'm really, really dead.

"But Sasuke's here!" Naruto pointed at the raven haired-boy who was sitting next to Kakashi, silently eating his breakfast.

"Order is still an order no matter what. It's ninja's rule." Kakashi said grimly. "You've to help Gai with his new hobby for a week for punishment."

Gai and his new hobby? Gai? New hobby?

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" Naruto clutched his head and screamed.

"Dobe." said Sasuke before turning back to his meal.

TBC

Naruto is my comical relief for this chapter. I said I'm not good at writing angst, didn't I? And don't worry, Itachi will be back. So will Orochimaru. Now I'm thinking of adding Kabuto and Akatsuki in to the picture.
