Note: Sorry for taking so long before updating. I've promised to make this chapter long, right? That's why it took me a lot of time. There's a little SasuSaku moment in this chapter because it's original that Sakura likes Sasuke but there's nothing really serious here.
Anyway, thanks for all the cookies. Here, I return your favor with my homemade butter cake!
Chapter VI: Pain and Oblivion
"Sasuke-kun, you're awake!" A relieved smile made its way to Sakura's lips as she looked up. Sasuke blinked. "Sakura...I..." His head throbbed terribly as he tried to recall why he was here, in the hospital's bed. He supposed to be facing Itachi and...
His head throbbed again at the mental images of his clan being murdered one by one by his beloved brother's hands. Those horrible images were played over and over in his mind like a never-ending videotape. Every image so vivid and painful. He clutched his head, trying to stop the painful throb as his body tensed.
Sakura looked at him worriedly. The boy sitting here before her wasn't the proud and icy Uchiha Sasuke she knew but a broken little boy that was lost and couldn't find an exit. She wrapped her arms around him, feeling him shiver slightly. She knew if she asked she would never get the answer, so this was all she could do for him. She looked at him sadly. How she wished she could read his mind.
There was a time when
Broken hearts and broken dreams
Were over.
The tension left Sasuke's body gradually as he felt the warm touch of the living beside him, not the cold and dead bodies of lifeless corpses, ensuring him that it was all an illusion--an ill illusion. "I'm okay now, Sakura. You can let go." He said, moving out of her embrace. Sakura still had that worried expression on her face and he knew she must be a little hurt but the girl managed to forced out a half-heart smile at him and sat back on her chair beside his bed.
Sasuke sighed and lay back, trying not to think of Itachi. But the more he tried not to, the more he thought about him...
~Flashback~
Sasuke charged toward his brother, Chidori performed in one hand. He was furious at Itachi's indifference. The older Uchiha feigned as if he didn't give a damn.
You made me hate you with the most vicious hatred in this world. Then you made me love you again with this uncertainty of a love that seems so filthy. And now that I'm standing here before you, you say nothing. Nothing at all. What's the point? What do you really want, Uchiha Itachi?
Itachi blocked his attack without much difficulty and slammed him into the solid wall. So hard that he feared a bone might snap. Sasuke glared at him with cold ice that made from pure anger. His eyes bled blood red to match with his brother's. Yet the ice melt as their lips met in a soul-devouring kiss that burnt with hell fire, for both could feel it; the forbidden desire that rushed through their veins. Sasuke's heart raced as Itachi's tongue plundered his mouth, tasting him, making him melt. It seemed like a small eternity before Itachi broke away, panting hard.
There was a place where
All you could do was
Wish on a four-leaf clover.
The older Uchiha looked at him with his usual expressionless face yet he could see something flashed in his eyes. But before Sasuke could register what it was, it was gone in a flash of blink. The older Uchiha was now holding him by the neck. "Hatefulness," he said, "It seems your hatefulness for me isn't enough, Otouto." He then closed his eyes only to open them again slowly. "From now on, you'll watch me kill the clan for 24 hours."
Is this what you really want?
And everything around him was gone, leaving only the dark alley way that lead to the Uchiha household where the scream and blood scent filled the chilly night air.
~End flashback~
"Sasuke-kun, eat some apple, ne? You haven't eaten for a day. You must be hungry." Sakura offered.
Sasuke said nothing. Yet Sakura began to peel the apple she took out from the basket.
"Sakura-chan, how is-" Naruto stopped mid-sentence as he came into the room and saw that his raven-haired teammate was now conscious. "Hey, Sasuke, you're alright?"
"...Worry about yourself, dobe." He didn't really mean that. It was just that he didn't want Naruto to ask him 'the question'.
"What!? Is that what a person say after-"
Sasuke narrowed his eyes. "If you have any problem, fight me, then."
"But Sasuke-kun, you've just recovered!" Sakura protested.
"You're crazy, Sasuke! I just want a simple talk!" Naruto's voice raised. He was starting to get pissed. He just wanted to help and all he got was this. They were teammate...no they were friends, weren't they? Didn't Sasuke trust him?
But now is a new time
There is a new place
Where dreams just can't come true.
"That's none of your business." You'll never understand.
"Fine. If you want a fight, I'll show you that I'm not the dead last anymore!" I have to prove myself to you, right? So that you can accept me...
"Sasuke-kun! Naruto! Please, don't!" Sakura tried hopelessly to stop the fight as the two boys made their way to the top of the building where they could fight.
I hate him and love him at the same time. Some says love and hate aren't different much from each other, for hate is love's darker sister. Yet it hurts so much feeling both of them at the same time.
"Brace yourself, ice block!" Naruto yelled as he jumped from his position, charging toward Sasuke. But Sasuke was ready for him. Both boys' attacks met mid-air and Sasuke flopped back, landing on his feet. He looked at the blond boy before him. Naruto did improve.
You can think that I'm an ice block, a heartless bastard. But you'll never understand.
Blue eyes widened as Naruto saw what was sparkling in Sasuke's right hand. Chidori. The attack that pierced through Gaara's sand. Naruto swallowed the lump in his throat. He too had a new ultimate attack. He jumped up to meet with Sasuke's attack yet before the deadly Chidori could stab him through the chest, he raised his hand up, jutsu activated.
Rasengan met Chidori. The energies impacted and twirled. Sakura shrieked in horror as Naruto and Sasuke were blown back with devastating force, hitting what was behind them hard.
Sasuke's eyes widened as he realized his fate, for it was unavoidable that his head would hit the large tank behind. He closed his eyes.
Maybe it's better to forget everything...
~*~*~
Itachi stared at the dead hare. It seemed some naughty children around had used it as a target for their shuriken. He bit his lips bitterly. It felt as if there were thousands of needles piercing at his heart from what he had just done. Yet he knew what he did was for the best. The hatefulness that would free him. He stood before the form of the hare that lay still on the lush green grass as the soft wind crooned its lament.
"Itachi-san, we should leave by now or-" Kisame began but he was cut off by a dark glare. The shark-like man quickly shut up. He knew when he should or shouldn't make a speech with his partner. He walked a good distance behind and sat down leaning against a tall tree, watching the raven haired-man in utter silence.
It started the day when I left you
As the second wisp of wind crooned, the music left the Uchiha prodigy's silver flute. Every single note entwined in a sorrowful lament...The lament of his never-come-true love. His lips lightly touched the cold silver metal. The sheer coldness reminded him of the solid surface of the mirror where he stood loathing his reflection. So different from his little brother's soft, warm lips. Every inch, every bit of him that he had tasted was filled with the essence that almost drove him mad, craving for more.
I could never love again the way that I loved you
It was nothing but a sinful addiction.
I could never cry again like I did when I left you
This world had no place for such a sinful soul like him.
And when we say goodbye,
The music ended beautifully with a long yet soft note as a sound of someone clapping was heard. Kisame sprang to his feet, his eyes searching around for the source. Itachi remained standing still yet his voice was that of a dripping venom.
"What do you want, Kakashi?"
"I return that question to you, Itachi. What do you really want?" The silver-grey haired jounin said as he came out of his hiding place, leaning against a tree, arms folded.
Oh the look in your eyes
Just left me beside myself without your heart
I could never love again now that we're apart
"My answer is the same as last time. Stop bothering me or I'll have to kill you."
"Kill me, then. A coward like you deserve to suffer." Kakashi said firmly, walking toward the older Uchiha without showing any fear of death. Itachi narrowed his eyes but didn't move as Kakashi drew nearer and nearer.
Kakashi smirked. Yet inwardly he was as bitter as Itachi was as he said this: "Now, it's only you that have to feel the pain of this forbidden love."
There was silence for a while. No sound but a ruffle of clothes. Kisame shifted slightly at the uneasiness. Actually, this had nothing to do with him but from the way Itachi acted, he found it quite interesting. And it seemed the other two men had forgotten that he was there, so he would take this as an exchange to this unsuccessful and no fun mission.
"...What do you mean?" Itachi finally spoke up. What does he mean 'now it's only me'? Could it even be possible that...?
"He loves you." Kakashi said quietly. Now the bitterness was evident in his voice. It hurt to let someone you love so much go. "The way a brother shouldn't feel for his own brother. The same pain you hold."
When I was sorry
It was too late to turn around
And tell you so
"But now he remembers nothing."
~*~*~
Naruto sat quietly on a bench--very unlike his usual enthusiastic self. Sakura sat beside him, burying her face in her hand, shivering slightly. It seemed she was crying. He felt guilty.
"Sakura-chan, I'm sorry. It was my fault." And he meant every word he said.
Sakura looked up, tears streaking all over her face. She wiped them away with the back of her hand. "It's okay, Naruto. It wasn't your fault. I don't blame you." She tried to force out a smile as if to say that she was okay, which in reality she wasn't.
There was no reason
There was no reason
Just a foolish beat of my heart.
Naruto went silent. He would rather have Sakura yelling at him than this, for that wouldn't make him feel this guilty. He shouldn't have fought Sasuke. He should control his temper. It wasn't fair that Sasuke got hit on the head and lost his memory--all precious memories while he just got a backache.
He balled his fist in anger. Angry at Sasuke and at himself even more. You think that no one cares about you? That no one will miss you? That they really believe you're an ice block? You're a selfish bastard, Sasuke. There're people that will miss you. You, the one that we used to know.
Oh, can't you see I'm not fooling nobody
Don't you see the tears are falling down my face
There're so many people that care for you and try to understand you.
Regretting tears slid down his face as he joined Sakura in mourning over the raven-haired boy they used to know.
Break my heart, you slipped away
You never noticed. And now you don't even remember who they are. Even the one you love most. You're one selfish bastard, Sasuke.
"If there's anything I can do, I'd-"
Sakura shook her head as if telling him not to say anything anymore. She rest her hand on the blond boy's fist. "Naruto." She said, now smiling. "Thank you."
Ino, Shikamaru and Chouji came visit Sasuke not long after Sakura had cried herself to sleep. Ino looked worriedly at her best friend. Shikamaru sighed.
"So Sasuke has amnesia, huh? What a hassle!"
"Yeah..." Naruto nodded in agreement. He hoped there was a way to cure this.
The footsteps echoed through the hallway. Chouji, who had been standing all the time asked: "Is that your sensei, Naruto?" He munched on another crisp of potato chip. "Wait! Who's that?"
Naruto turned and his blue eyes widened in recognition. He stood up. His eyes blazed with rage. If there was someone that should take responsibility in this other than him, it had to be Sasuke's older brother. He glared at the raven haired-man, ready to attack him. Kakashi saw this and raise a hand to stop him. "None of that now, Naruto."
Naruto gritted his teeth as Kakashi led Itachi through the door into the room where a raven haired-boy sat still on the white bed, staring at nothingness ahead of him.
"Sasuke."
Didn't know I was wrong
Never meant to hurt you now you're gone
The boy turned at the sound of what had been told to be his name. He had a blank look on his pale face as if he was a porcelain doll that had no life, no emotion. "Who are you?" The boy asked, his voice holding neither love nor hatred. It was blank like a paper.
I could never love again now that we're apart.
Itachi stared at the boy wordlessly. He closed his eyes, taking in a deep breath.
Is this what I really want?
The boy looked at him. "I feel like I've known you before. Somewhere... What?" He lifted a finger to his face, feeling the tears that flowed from his eyes like a streaming river. "Why am I crying? Who're you, really?"
I could never love again now that we're apart.
Itachi bit his lips as he wrapped his arms around the boy's lithe form.
"I'm sorry, love. Sorry for everything."

Finally, I've finished this chapter. It seems like eternity! And yes, the words written in bold letters are from the song called 'Foolish Beat' by Debbie Gibson. Kind of a good old song.
Anyway, review please. It makes me work faster.
Closing quote: Even a murderer has a heart.
