Chapter VIII: Shadow of Yesterday
Snow, white against the sole blackness of the night ensnared itself on the solidity that was the blurred yet ice-cold window glass. Down and down it fell languidly from the heaven, painting the earth with pure white, for it was winter: the arrival of miniscule glacial age in Konoha. Behind the frosty window glass, in a warm yet dark room, two figures slept soundlessly together on one bed, arms and legs entangled and lips barely brushing like a prelude to a kiss. They slept like death as if nothing in this world could bother them.
Yet it did...
A vivid dream-no-a vivid nightmare the younger one was having. So real like replaying a memory. The boy had been having such horrid nightmare for the past whole week after he had started his new life. So much one could learn in a week...
Sasuke had learned about this little world revolving around him called Konoha: The secret ninja village of the Leaf. He had learned to become acquainted with people around--those he had forgotten that he once knew and those he had never known before. And above all, he had learned to know most about a certain raven haired-shinobi whose eyes the memorable color of dancing flame. His dear lover, Itachi.
Sometimes he wanted nothing but to just call back the pieces of scattered memories he had lost. But every once he asked, everyone would just smiled and shook their heads, claiming that past was past. It was nothing necessary now that he had a happy life. He had asked Itachi twice but what he received was silence and a vague and agonized look in those beautiful red eyes. That was why he decided to stop asking.
And it continued, this dreadful horror of a nightmare. It didn't stop haunting him but visited every single night...
Come to me, Sasuke-kun...
As soon as that vile voice faded and Sasuke found himself standing again on a familiar alleyway. The night was frigid and the sky was dark. Yet the large full moon lit the starless night, illuminating everything in the area. Bodies that lay scattered, blood that spilled all over, the heartless silver light illuminated everything. Trapped, the boy felt as if someone was watching him from above the rooftop. He looked up. No one was there.
Don't you seek power? I can grant you power.
Scence changed and now he was standing in front of a door as it slid open slowly, giving him little by little until it came fully a view of two slaughtered bodies on the floor. Their blood seeped through the material and ceaselessly imprinted there. As time passed, the evidence might loss its color but it wouldn't fade away but remained even just the slightest pink. Sasuke stared at the corpses. The woman with long dark hair had a katana stuck out of her bosom.
Don't you want revenge? Have you forgotten this pain?
The silver katana that was dyed red was being pulled out of her body slowly. Its wielder was standing there, hidden in the shadow. As the dark cloud cleared away and the pale face of the moon came out, revealing the face of the murderer, Sasuke's breath hitched. "...Aniki."
Come to me and you'll be granted with much more power.
The murderer swung his katana down, aiming for his neck. Yet the darkness around seemed to darken as it turned into a thick black smoke, shielding him. Amidst the smoke, a pair of gleaming golden eyes could be seen, fixing toward him with intensity.
You're mine.
Burnt. His neck burnt suddenly with hot-white pain. That moment, the thick smoke cleared and the katana came down...
Mine...
White flash.
Sasuke's eyes snapped open for a sudden. He sat up, shivering but it was not from the coldness from the outside. He hugged himself tightly, calming himself down, for he didn't want to wake Itachi up. It was just another nightmare. He reassured himself and silently left the bed. Despite the fact that it was snowing outside, the boy's clothes were damp from perspiration. Sighing, Sasuke opened the bathroom's door and slip in.
Itachi rolled over, arms reaching out for the warmth they had lost. When he discovered that the space beside him was empty, he lazily lifted one of his eyelids, which flew both open at the sound of something hitting the floor.
Thud.
"Sasuke?"
Sasuke stared at his reflection in disbelief. There, staring back at him was a pair of blood red eyes he used to admire so much--the same eyes his lover had. His shaking hands dropped whatever it was in the grip earlier, abandoning it to hit the cold floor with a thud. Of all the time he had spent with Itachi in the past whole week, this was the first time he had realized the startling resemblance they shared. It was so obvious. How could he be so blind...
He then remembered the nightmare.
The face of the murderer was hidden in the shadow. Yet it was being disclosed as the silver moonlight came out from behind the dark cloud. In the dread silence of death surrounding, there was one word that rang out. "...Aniki."
Aniki. Aniki. Big brother. The word echoed in his mind so many times. Although the nightmare was so vivid like he had witnessed it with his own eyes, he couldn't remember the face of the man that held the bloodstained katana as he woke up. It seemed as if his subconsciousness didn't want to remember. It wanted to forget. He frowned and stepped into the tub, turning the faucet on, letting the hot beads of water sprayed on him.
"Sasuke." On hearing that deep voice, the younger Uchiha stiffened. Itachi was now standing just outside the tub with only the bed sheet hiding the lower part of his body, his upper body bare and hair messy from the sleep. The younger boy said nothing as his lover got into the tub. He let out a pleased sigh as Itachi's strong hand massaged his tense, wet shoulders. He closed his eyes and tilted his head back, resting it on the taller one's shoulder.
Sasuke relaxed into the touch, enjoying it for a while but as soon as he opened his eyes, he froze. Despite the steam clouding all over its surface, the mirror never lied. Even now that Sasuke's eyes returned to their natural color, the truth could never be easily ignored. He turned, giving the older boy a straight gaze. "Itachi..." he said, lips quivering, fear was installed in the trembling voice. "Are you my brother?"
"..."
At his lover's silence, Sasuke felt like his heart would stop beating any moment. The older Uchiha stood there unmoving, soaking from head to toe as the water continually hit him, making the pale skin flush. Sasuke took a step back as if to disappear behind the floating mist of steam. The water gathering on the tub bottom made a soft splash.
"Are you afraid?" Itachi finally voiced, taking a step further while Sasuke took another step back. The younger Uchiha avoided his gaze and kept backing away, denying to say anything as he. The game was over when Sasuke's back hit the wall and he was trapped--Itachi's hand kept him pinned there. Still, the younger one denied to look at his lover's face, bending his head low--hair veiling his eyes.
Is this the truth he tries to keep me away from?
Itachi tipped the boy's chin up, angling him to meet with his blood red gaze. His thumb slowly grazed across the boy's trembling lips before leaning in close enough that their lips were brushing. "Do you regret it?" Ended the whisper, he crushed their lips together in a fierce kiss, biting and sucking at the boy's lower lips, his tongue pushing, demanding for enter. It was not long before Sasuke surrendered, moaning and parting his lips invitingly. The kiss heated up into a more arousing battle of tongues as they fought for dominance, separating only briefly to bless their lungs with oxygen.
Sasuke yanked at Itachi's long black locks while another hand sneaked around the older one's back, pulling him close so that their flush bodies were pressed against each other's. "Never." The younger Uchiha said, this time firmly. He knew what he was doing.
Who cares if we're brothers. Let the god curse us, let the people condemn us. I don't care.
He knew he loved this man from the day he first met him at the hospital and he wouldn't let anything destroy it. Even the fact that they were brothers.
Don't you want revenge?
The creepy voice rang in his mind and he felt like his entire body was burning. What's that voice talking about? He questioned himself. Yet he didn't think he wanted any knowledge about it. He pulled Itachi closer, hungry for every contact of Itachi's flesh against his. His slender fingers danced down the other's flawless back and stopped as they reached the rim of the white sheet that hugged the slim hips, securing his brother's hidden treasure. "Never." He confirmed and yanked at the fabric. The wet sheet then fell to the bottom of the tub with a splash and lay there, soaked in the swirling pool of hot water.
As soon as the two Uchiha stepped out of their apartment, they were greeted with the sight of two blushing genins, one male, one female and a grinning jounin whose head was now swimming with hot incestuous fantasies. It wasn't hard to tell that these people had heard them. The younger of the two blushed hotly, his high cheekbones turning red like a ripe cherry. No one noticed the slight change in Itachi's expression since Uchiha Sasuke blushing was quite something new to Naruto and Sakura. Well, no one but Kakashi. The silver-grey haired jounin gave the former S rank criminal a knowing smirk.
"What're you doing here?" Itachi slit his eyes at Kakashi, wrapping an arm possessively around Sasuke's waist. Since Sasuke had an amnesia, he didn't have to do a mission.
"Well," the masked jounin began, scratching his chin, "actually, there's nothing to do with Sasuke-chan." he said, adding the suffix in particular. "It's you, Itachi. We've to talk." The jounin grinned slyly. Taking a step forward, he tilted the older Uchiha's chin up. Itachi's eyes widened slightly and he inched back, staring at the jounin. Kakashi laughed. He then added: "With Tsunade-sama."
"I'm coming with you." said Sasuke.
"Oh no, Sasuke-chan. You're staying with Naruto and Sakura. We won't be gone long." Kakashi said, caressing the boy's soft cheek repeatly. He was rather doing that to annoy him than flirting with his little brother, Itachi noticed. Yet the man seemed to enjoy it too much. "Whatever it is, just hurry up." He said plainly.
"Jealous?" Kakashi laughed again and kissed Sasuke on the cheek. But before Itachi could say or do anything, Sakura spoke up. "Come, Sasuke-kun. I've baked some cookies. I hope you'll like it." And she dragged the boy back inside his apartment.
"Hey, what about me, Sakura-chan?" Naruto asked and followed them shortly.
When all of the genins disappeared from the sight, Kakashi's smile turned into a deep frown. Four ANBU then came out of their hiding places. Itachi narrowed his eyes.
"Leave us." Kakashi demanded.
"We're ordered to accompany both of you to Tsunade-sama." One of them replied. And keep an eye on Uchiha Itachi.
"It seems we've more enemies here, eh?" Kakashi pulled up his forehead protector, revealing a glowing red Sharingan eyes. "Yakushi Kabuto."
The man smirked and put off his ANBU mask. "That's right."
