The Choice

Disclaimer: If I was J.K. Rowling, would I be wasting my time writing Fanfic? I'd be busy on book six right now!

A/N: Just something I thought up in a very short period of time. One shot.

It was raining but Hermione didn't care. She wanted it to pour. Maybe it would wash away her confusion, her pain, everything. She couldn't take it anymore.

Her long hair clung to her shoulders in dark wet clumps and her arms were folded over her chest as she walked down the streets of London with the rain falling all around her, just trying to make her decision.

He'd given her an ultimatum. Him or Ron. He wasn't going to marry a woman who still had an old flame following her like an overgrown puppy, always wanting more than she did.

"You have to choose," he had told her angrily. "I'm sick of him meeting you when we're out looking so eager and not acknowledging in the least that we are engaged."

"He's my friend Severus!" she'd shouted back. "I can't hurt him like that! He loves me!"

"Well love hurts, Hermione!" he'd exploded. "Him or me! You have to choose!"

Yes, love did hurt. She loved Severus more than she'd ever care to admit, even to herself. Yet, she loved Ron but not in the way he wanted her to. He would always be one of her best friend and therefore she didn't want to hurt him. He meant too much to her. They had dated in their sixth and seventh years but ended it after the last battle; after Voldemort was gone and Harry was left haunted and messed up and they were there to pick up the pieces in any way they could. Voldemort was gone but at what cost to them? Harry would never be the same and he had hurt Hermione very badly in more ways than just one.

            But there had been Severus.

When the pieces of Harry's broken life were swept up and carefully pieced back together to remake a flawed version of what had once been, Severus had been there to put the bruised and broken girl back together while Ron buried him in girl after girl while she waited.

Hermione had fallen deeply in love with Severus. He hadn't made her forget her problems with Ron and Harry but he'd made her pain diminish. He made her accept it and deal with it and learn that everything would be okay. When he had handed her the small wooden box with the diamond ring inside, she had accepted, knowing she was making the right choice.

If only she was so sure as she walked in the rain.

There she was, two days before her wedding, second-guessing herself. What was she doing there? What was she doing there? It was raining and her husband to be was waiting inside for her, probably worried sick. Deep inside, she had always known the answer. She just needed to be sure of herself.

Determinedly, she walked back down the street to the flat they had in the city and took the elevator. The second she stepped out, she found herself being smothered in hugs and kisses by one Severus Snape.

"I made my choice," she told him unnecessarily. "I made my choice."

Very short. I just needed to write some SSHG really bad. R&R!
