"Shieldmaiden"

Work: The Lord of the Rings
Character(s): Éowyn
Category: Poetry
Rating: PG

Clad in white, a glimmer in the black
You stand proud, alone, and tall
Looking over the tragic land
'Round you and your heart, a great stone wall

Not often do you break down
But now no one else is near
Trickling down a solemn face
A single crystal tear

Fair maiden, do you feel?
Cold maiden, so you weep?
On these starless lonely nights
Do you cry yourself to sleep?
Stern princess, what is left?
Death's princess, is there naught?
Will you never get to use the art
Of war you have been taught?

Your steps are haunted by a snake
A vile man with hollow eyes
To some his words are wisdom
But to you naught but lies

Your uncle poisoned by hissing words
Your brother exiled, banished, gone
Your parents and your cousin dead
Your futile life continues on

Fair maiden, break away
Cold maiden, do you dare?
Your king will die without you
At this point, do you care?
Grey-eyed one, take your sword
Lonely one, 'gainst your breast
Not battle-glory; suicide
In death will you find rest?

A man you found, you love him, yet
Love he does not return
You thought you would find solace
But now are left to yearn

You begged to ride beside him
He said with your people your duties lie
Then turned and rode to ghostly paths
"Nay, Lady," his last reply

Fair maiden, where is mercy?
Cold maiden, has she died?
If she has then you shall too
And keep at least your pride
Shieldmaiden, and what now?
Shield-hearted, will you stay?
No, for you are clever and
You will conceive a way.

Éowyn, Roccalas, Horse-Joy
Indeed 'twas her who stayed behind
Dernhelm the Rider goes to war
And they are one in soul and mind

With your men and king, to Pelennor!
To the heart of all the lands of Men
And on you ride to grateful death
You solemnly await the end

Fair maiden, is there hope?
Cold maiden, was there ever?
Or do you merely wish these bonds
Of life and love to sever?
Proud warrior, is this it?
Strong warrior, life's sweet end?
Your face is set, you ride to death
The darkness is your friend.
