Legend of Daerdae

Prologue: "...The thrill of the chase..."

In the dead of night, Mark crept up to the museum. He had been told that they had a valuable diamond showing. He had not come just to see it, like the big crowds had. No... He had come to steal the diamond.
As Mark climbed up the wall, he pondered about how he had descended to being a thief. No... Mark didn't think of it as descending. In fact, he felt no different. He did not feel the least bit of guilt. Maybe that was what made him more successful than other thieves. However, he could not stop himself thinking about how he had come to stealing diamonds from the public...
Mark quietly landed on top of the roof. He took out a knife and looked for the skylight. He walked around for a couple minutes, trying to locate the skylight above the room containing the diamond.
Marks career as a thief started early in childhood. At first, he sometimes stole trading cards that he just had to have, but soon found them boring. Then, he would go to stealing pocket money. Just small amounts, but the numbers added up quickly. After that, he dropped out of high school, and became a thief for living. In the beginning, he was not a good thief. Often times, he would set off alarms, and would have the time of his life evading capture. Eventually, Mark became a successful thief. He would steal priceless treasures time and time again...
Mark finally found the skylight. He took the knife, and sliced open the rubber band around the glass. Stealthily, he took out a plunger-like object, and pressed it onto the glass. He lifted the glass up, placing it beside him. Finally, he jumped down, about 15 feet from the safe.
Finally, his dreams had come true. Mark was a rich man. He bought a mansion in Europe, and a summerhouse in Hawaii. He began his own library, filling it with all of his favorite books. He even owned a private jet. However, he was not content. Recently, he reconsidered the reasons he began to steal. Before, he had always wanted to be rich, and live life lazily. Now, he truly realized why he had begun to steal. It was for "The thrill of the chase."
Mark looked around. Finally he took out a can. He pressed the button on it and smoke started to come out. As the smoke spread across the room, red lasers were revealed. "Too easy. Way too easy", Mark thought aloud. He took out a coin and flipped it into a laser. The coin passed through harmlessly. Then, Mark casually walked through the lasers, undaunted by their eerie red glow. "Crummy holograms."
Mark had sold his mansion. He also sold his jet. Then, he did the only sensible thing to do with the money. He donated it to orphans. He had been an orphan himself. However, he kept the library. Only his most precious books stayed with him. To him, books were his food. The only two things that could keep him alive were books, and stealing. Without them, he was nothing.
Finally, Mark walked right up to the safe. He put his ear to it, spinning the dial, taking note of when the lock clicked. Finally, he spun the dial a few times, and opened the safe. However, he only opened it half way. The diamond sat right in front of him. It was small. It was weird to think that he came all this way to get something so... seemingly insignificant. Then, he took out a notebook, and wrote a note to the detective who was assigned to catch him. He took out the diamond, and replaced it with the note. Finally, he opened the safe all the way, sounding the alarm. Then he closed it and just stood there for about a minute. Then, he heard the blearing sirens of police cars, and walked off, murmuring "The thrill of the chase."
