Rory couldn't believe this! But there it was on her caller ID. 'Lane Home.'
What did this mean? Did Lane really believe Rory called to find out their
next gig? No, Lane was smarted than that. Should I pick up? Rory thought.
Of course, Lane is your friend. Pick up already! Rory finally picked up the
phone.
"Hello?" Rory said breathing loudly, as if to show she ran to get her phone.
"Rory, what's wrong?" Lane said determined to find out.
"What do you mean?" Rory said. "I'm just doing homework here at Yale."
"Rory, please." Lane said."1) You are never without your cell phone, yet you made it sound as if you ran to get your cell phone. Probably to cover up the fact you were deciding whether or not to pick up at all. 2) I told you right before you left, like, 2 days ago, that we didn't have a gig and probably wouldn't for a while. 3) You rushed the end of your message. Being your best friend, I know that means you were making something up on the spot to get out of doing something. Just like in 2nd grade when you told Ms. J you had to go to the bathroom instead of telling her you had to go to the nurse. And finally, 4) you didn't mention Jess at all." Rory took all this in while she realized Lane was a really good friend. She probably did nothing that bad with Jess.
"Lane, you're right." Rory said slowly. "I just-I just wanted to know what was going on between you and Jess. I mean, you were on a bed."
"Only because there were no chairs!" Lane said. Rory thought it was a bit too defensive. "Besides, I would never like the same guy you liked."
"Lane, what's wrong?" Rory said.
"What do you mean?" Lane said a little nervously.
"Lane, please." Rory said, imitating what Lane had done earlier. "1) You said, 'Only because there were no chairs' a little too defensively. And a little too loudly. As your best friend, I know that means you are lying or covering up. Just like in the 6th grade when your mom asked you if you like that bad music I listened to. You nearly shouted, 'No, Mama, I only listen to good Christian music!' Also, 2) in the 3rd grade you told Jimmy that I had cooties because we both had a crush on him and he liked me."
"Okay, okay." Lane said. "I'm sorry about Jimmy. But nothing's going on with Jess, I promise."
"Could you be a little louder, I can't hear you!" Rory said, pointing out that Lane talked loudly again.
" Sorry, the band's practicing and it's kind of loud over here." Lane said, even louder this time. But Rory heard no music. Should she trust Lane? Lane is her friend, but who's your friend, really, in the game of love?
