The way back to his house was long and lonely for Ryou as he trudged through the darkened streets. Memories of the harsh words that had been spat at him, so full of anger, so full of contempt, were still playing over and over in the jumbled pits of his mind. All had been going fairly well today, all until about an hour ago, when he once again had the shattered fragments of his world shredded to pieces. He walked slowly, labouredly, as if a dark cloud of despondency was following him everywhere he went, raining misery upon his very soul.
.
As he entered his quiet, empty house, he hardly cared to lock the door behind himself before he threw his tired young body onto the couch. A long, listless sigh escaped his candy-like tiers as his eyelids slid shut. For a long time he sat on the couch, not moving save for the soft rising and falling of his chest. At length he opened a single doe-brown eye, his gaze landing on the motionless form of the phone. He scoffed at himself. What, was he expecting it to ring and carry a message from the highest and most glorious sanctuary in Heaven, saying that his prayer for affection had finally been answered?
It seemed like hours, but it was really only a few minutes later that a tear slid down his cheek, a second tear soon following, bringing with it a third, a fourth, and even a fifth. He had just managed to take down all his many barries, and his vulerable heart and mind were attacked so brutally. Maybe Marik was right, maybe it was his fault. Understanding nearly dawned in his eyes as a memory flashed in his mind. It was only once he had spoken that Malik had lost control of the car, only once he had spoken that the glass smashed into his side. Ryou glanced at the phone a second time. Maybe he should call? ...Dare he risk having Marik pick up the phone?
He hesitantly reached out and grabbed the receiver, staring at the numbers on the touch-tone pads. He gazed at the numbers for a very long while until he finally gathered up the courage to dial Malik's house. It took much longer than Ryou would have liked, but eventually there was a click as the phone on the other end of the line was picked up.
"Hello?"
Ryou heaved a sigh of relief to hear that Bakura had picked up. "H-Hi."
Instantly recognizing the voice, Bakura arched his eyebrow in curiousity. "Hello... Is there something I can do for you...?"
"Can I talk to Malik? Please?"
"Hold on a moment." Bakura said. Ryou heard the sound of the phone being set down on a wooden table as Bakura left to go get Malik. After about thirty seconds, the phone was picked up a second time.
"Ry?"
"Hi Malik."
"Listen, Ry, I heard what Marik said to you. I don't know what his problem is. Usually he's never held on to something for this long--"
"I'll bet nothing ever held as much audacity, though."
Malik frowned. "Well, yeah. But I've never seen him hold a grudge for so long." There was a pause as a voice, obviously Marik's, was heard in the background. "Yeah, whatever, Marik." Malik was heard saying, before he returned his attention to the telephone. His voice was in a whisper, "Sorry 'bout that. Listen. Fuck what he said, I swear to Ra I won't let what my brother said have any effect on us. I won't be at school tomorrow, though... Mondays aren't my friends." Said the youth with a slight chuckle. "But I'm coming on Tuesday. Meet me by the front gate at Nutrition, okay?"
"Okay."
//
Ryou awoke Monday morning with an empty feeling nagging at his heart. He sat up slowly in bed, slumping over as he tried to figure out why he was feeling this dismal sensation. The morning sunlight glistened over his beatific features, adding to the gorgeousness of the boy who seemed almost ethereal. With a sigh, he flopped back onto his bed burried himself under the covers. The house was so empty, as was his heart, his soul. Everything that had once filled him with such a light and love of everything had long since died, having been completely devoured by lonliness and darkness.
His frail figure lifted itself off the mattress reluctantly. The cold morning air hit his skin, and he shivered into the thin fabric of his pyjamas. With a sigh, he began shifting through his many tops and pants; all black and just as empty and lost as he was. Eventually he selected a pair of black pants with many zippers and a t-shirt that had red sleeves, with the rest of the cloth completely black. In the middle of the shirt was a picture of Happy Bunny, and underneath Happy Bunny were white letters that said "I Love Everybody But You Pinheads."
The walk to school was short, as always, and before he wanted to admit it, Ryou was facing the front doors of Domino High School. A few kids were sitting on the many steps that lined the way up to the main building, each engaged in either homework or conversations with another. Ryou sighed. School was going to be especially lonely today.
.
He found it impossible to focus that day. Everywhere he went, everything he saw, reminded him of Malik in one way or another. No matter how much he had wanted to, Ryou just couldn't manage to sit in his usual empty corner of the school at Lunch or Nutrition, and he definetly didn't dare go sit near the bungalos. There was no way he would risk running into Marik. Ryou wouldn't have minded if he were to come across Bakura somewhere, for even though the other white-haired boy was in a relationship with Marik, he seemed to have a much more of a rational side. But, unfortunately, seeing Bakura would also mean seeing Marik.
And he would have been crazy to want that.
//
"Ryou Bakura!"
A hand slapped down on the boy's desk, jerking him back into reality. With a mental shake of the head, Ryou glanced up into the eyes of his biology teacher. He kept his gaze steady as Mr. Moyata explained how he had been asking Ryou the same question for the past few minutes.
"Gomen nasai, Sensei." Ryou replied monotonously.
Mr. Moyata sighed, and returned to the front of the classroom. He'd noticed from the moment the boy walked in today that something had been weighing him down, but spoke nothing of it. With a click tap of ruler on desk, Mr. Moyata regained attention of the class and resumed the lesson.
Ryou zoned out for the rest of class; he just couldn't manage to keep his thoughts focused enough to participate or even pay attention to anything regarding school today. The day seemed to just flow right past him; classes blended into one another and by the time he got home that night, he could hardly recall any details of the day.
.
He fell asleep quickly that night; he didn't think he could wait for tomorrow. His sleep was dreamless and peaceful for the most part, but that didn't stop the occasional tossing and turning throughout the night. A light sigh escaped his slumbering form as his body relaxed; it seemed something was still troubling the petite youth.
//
The sun rose Tuesday morning with a hesitant glow surrounding its golden atmosphere. It almost seemed like the whole day was going to hold vast amounts if fear in its 24-hours, as the rays of light gently prodded through the boy's black curtians. The figure underneath the dark covers groaned and burried himself deep into the obsidian mass of fabrics. But the lights continued pushing the possiblity of sleep from his mind as they inched towards the corners of room. With a sigh, he pulled himself out of bed and glanced at the clock. 7:15 A.M.. He still had about half an hour to get to school on time, but that didn't mean he wanted to go.
He looked at the date on the calendar opposite his bed. A light escaped escaped his lips; today he would get to see Malik! 'That's right,' he thought, 'today is Tuesday.' Ferver renewed, he quickly hopped out of bed and threw on his usual black attire.
.
The moment he stepped onto campus, he found himself filled with a currently absent energy as he dashed through the technology building to his locker. He couldn't wait to see Malik. The thought of finally seeing the youthful Egyptian out of the hispital and walking around without any nurses chasing after him brought a smile to Ryou's usually somber face. His relationp with Malik had definetly improved once the two had gotten past the original confrontation. He enjoyed the blonde's presence now, and he was truly ecstatic that Malik had made it out of everything okay.
Nutrition arrived with a renewed source of energy, and Ryou fond himself almost running to the fence where he was supposed to meet Malik. He got there a little bit early, because the people he normally found who sat in this area weren't even present yet. He leaned against the chain-link fence and dropped his back-pack to his feet.
"Ryou! Hey, Ryou!"
He glanced up into a lively pair of amethyst orbs, and couldn't help but smile at the sight of Malik grinning at him. "Hi Malik."
"Listen Ry. I'm really sorry about what Marik said to you. He has his reasons for being so protective of me, yeah, but sometimes he just takes it too far. I suppose in his own way he means well, but he isn't the best person out there at expressing what's really on his mind."
"It's alright." Ryou assured him, "Tell me to stop if I'm asking too personal a question, but... what are those reasons?"
A flicker of sadness crossed Malik's face. "Well... Aw, hell, I guess it won't kill me to tell someone. You know Marik's my brother, right? Well, it wasn't always just me, Ishizu, and Marik. The three of us used to have another brother; his name was Odion. But he never made it over to Japan with Marik and me. Father was taking him to the pyramids so he could see them, but an accident of some kind... I don't really remember... They didn't make it home. I was barely old enough at the time to know what'd happened, but it drove Marik to the edge. The four of us were all so close. Losing his baby brother was the most horrible thing to ever happen to him. The only brother he has left now is me... So he watches over me a lot. He doesn't want to lose his last little brother."
"But I thought you said he's almost never home anymore?" Ryou arched an eyebrow.
Malik nodded. "He isn't. But he still worries for my safety... that I know."
"I see..." Ryou said, running a hand through his hair.
With a dismissive sigh towards the topic of the fourth, deceased Ishtar child, Malik put the smile back on his face and turned to face Ryou again. He gazed closely at the boy's angelic features, at the delicate way each silvery strand of hair hung infront of mysterious earthen orbs. Ryou was simply intoxicating, and Malik was still in love with him, as he scooted slightly closer.
A comfortable quietness drifted over them, until the desire Malik had to have those candy-pink lips against his was becoming too much to fight against. His smile turned into an almost predatory smirk, and he shifted his position so that he was facing Ryou head-on. "Hey, Ry, there's something on your face."
Ryou blinked, "What?" He wiped at his cheek.
"I'll get it for ya," Malik said, excitement building within him. Slowly, he leaned in and tenderly pressed his lips to Ryou's. He put all of the love and hope he had in his heart into the kiss, hoping that Ryou would still speak to him once they parted for air.
Ryou's eyes were wider than Malik had ever seen before, and a deep crimson blush was quickly making its way across his cheeks. The tingly feeling of Malik's kiss was still lingering on his lips. He stared at Malik in pleasant shock, unbelieving that he had just received his first kiss.
And what a kiss it was.

OH MY GOD! I finally finished this chapter. I was thinking, 'Holy shit! It's 9th chapter and they haven't even kissed yet!' Next chapter- Ryou's reaction!
I know Marik's being a real jerk to Ryou, but Bakura-san is going to talk some sense into him next chapter, too. Sorry to all Odion/Rishid fans, but I had to think of something for why Marik is so insanely overprotective of Malik-chan. Also, next chapter there will HOPEFULLY be more pairings added. I'm thinking Seto/Joey, since Kaiba was mentioned earlier on. Hm.
Bakura says it sucks that he can't comment now due to the new FFN rules. ;_; Sorry 'Kura.
Review counter updated to 145... -_-; Hopefully this time I'll be better with updating. This chapter was hard to write. Oh well, thanks for reviewing guys! Your feedback is what gives me motivation. *Nods* Well, see ya'll later.
