In The Shadows

Hermione woke suddenly. She was sprawled out on the grass in her garden. "Not again!" She groaned as she realised what had happened.

The last thing she could remember was walking outside in her back garden on the last day of the summer holidays enjoying the peace and quiet in the sun when everything suddenly went dark and cold.

This had been happening since the end of last term, she had been blacking out in all sorts of different places, in the supermarket, in the park, in her house and even in the centre of the street in Diagon Alley, luckily Ron had been there to get her out of the way of the other witches and wizards who were trying to do their shopping.

(Flashback)

"Hermione?" A soft voice called. She could feel gentle pats on her cheek. "Earth to Hermione! Come in Hermione! Can you hear me?" Slowly she began to open her eyes.

"Where am I?" Hermione tried to sit up but was pushed back down by Ron, "Why am I here? What happened?" Ron looked down at her, not knowing what had happened himself.

"Well you kind of stopped, dead in your tracks and went kinda rigid. Then your eyes went all weird and you just collapsed. Are you O.K?"

"Yeah I think. It's happened before. Twice, I think"

"This isn't good Hermione" Ron looked worried now, "If it's happened before then you should seek medical help"

"I'm fine Ron. It's probably just the heat. Anyway where are we?"

"The back room of Florean Fortescue's. He say's you can have a free sundae if you feel up to it" Florean Fortescue's sundaes could not be refused, whichever you picked you would always eat as slowly as possible as to make it last longer. "Are you sure you're alright?" Ron asked again before helping Hermione to her feet. Hermione nodded.

Hermione had considered Ron's point about medical help but came to the conclusion that muggle doctors would just say she'd gone mad and wizard healers would think she was jinxed or something and she would be locked up in St Mungo's. Maybe it was just the heat.

Many ideas of what it could possibly be flooded Hermione's head as she pulled herself to her feet and headed for her room.

The only thing she could not deny about these blackouts was that they became worse every time. At first they were just like falling asleep, then she began to feel cold, and now she would feel like she was in shadow, alone in a cold, empty space with nothing but her own fears surrounding her. Even when she had woken up she still felt like she was alone, in the shadows of her own mind.

She suspected that Harry had felt the same around dementors but there weren't any dementors in the muggle world and she had never been affected like Harry had when around them anyway.

Hermione wanted to tell Harry and Ron the full story of the blackouts, she didn't want to keep it all inside her, and she needed to tell someone. She needed help. But do you look for help against blackouts? Who could she turn to? She felt alone...like in her blackouts...she felt like she was in constant shadow...
