Ch. 2 A Narrow Escape
Once again, Spunk was awoken by ABC by being hit with another pillow. This time when she sleepily swung her fist out at ABC, missed and rolled over, Marbles came over and ripped her sheets off. This really made Spunk angry, but once again, she still couldn't help laughing at her friend's attempts to get her up.
She finally got up, threw her clothes on, brushed her hair and stumbled out the door, still half asleep.
"I really tink Manhattan is beddah than Brooklyn." said Spunk as she, Marbles, Kane, and Ponine were walking down Mainstreet.
"No, I tink Brooklyn is beddah cuz Spot is dere. He knows how to run da place real good." Kane stated.
Just as Spunk was about to contradict her, she hit the ground hard and heard manic laughter from behind her. She stood up, brushed herself off, and looked up to see the hideous face of Oscar and Morris Delancy. She glared at them with pure hatred.
"Oh, s'cuze me missy!" said Oscar and he tipped his hat. He and Morris laughed again and turned to walk away. Spunk was angry. These were the people she hated and would always hate. People who took advantage on small 13 year olds like her.
Spunk picked up her papers, and slowly started to walk up behind the Delancys who were a bit down the road now. Her cheeks growing rosier by the second, she ran the last ways up to them, and stopped. She lifted her right foot up, and kicked Morris squarely in the behind. Then she ran. Fast.
"Run!" she shouted at her friends. They ran down an alleyway and there were two paths. They split up, Ponine and Spunk going one way, and Kane and Marbles going the other.
Spunk and Ponine jumped garbage cans and rocks, dodged people with wagons and got inquisitive looks from nearby police officers until they ran into another alleyway. It was a dead end and Morris was starting to run into the alley.
Spunk looked at Ponine. Ponine looked back at her, her blue eyes shimmering with fear. Morris came closer to them.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, sharp, gleaming knife. He gave Spunk a menacing look as he raised the knife to Spunk's head level.
"Now I'm gonna to do to you what I should have done to your little friend Jacky Boy a long time ago!" he shouted, and raised the knife into the air. Spunk jumped back and closed her eyes waiting for the worst. There was nowhere to go. But nothing happened.
She opened her eyes, and saw Morris on the ground unconscious. Mush and Itey standing there smiling.
"Hey babe! Bit of trouble there?" Mush said to her, grinning. She smiled back at him and fell into his outstretched arms.
Spunk didn't usually let people save her from anything. She preferred to do things herself than have other people help her. She didn't want to be like the other helpless girls that couldn't even open a door by themselves. But in this case, it was different. Mush could help her with anything and she wouldn't have minded at that moment.
