Ch. 5. That night while lying in her bed, Spunk thought about where
Blink could have been and what he could have been doing. She didn't want to
think that he could have been a traitor to them. He just couldn't have. She
had known him since she was little. He'd always been the noble kind that
stood up for everyone.
"Wanna walk to Brooklyn and check out the dock boys?" Trolley asked Spunk with a smile the following afternoon.
"Why not! Lets go." Spunk decided. They began walking in the direction of the Brooklyn bridge and after a few minutes of silence, Spunk asked Trolley, "What do you think Blink is up to? I mean, I'm not sayin hes a scab, but he hasn't been around lately and no one actually knows what hes doin."
Trolley stopped and looked at the ground. "I've been thinkin the same thing. I haven't seen him in days and hes usually around all the time. I don't know what hes doin, but it can't be good."
They continued walking and met up with Kane half way there. She decided to follow them too. Trolley asked Kane if she had seen any signs of Blink, but she hadn't.
"Maybe we should tell the police and they could send out a party to look for him." Kane said to them.
"No, you need a lot of money to do that... don't you?" Trolley told her.
"He'll probably show up in a few days." Spunk said apprehensively.
A few hours later, they were just getting off the Brooklyn bridge. It was starting to get dark. The sky was a pale orange-ish red and the sun was sinking down behind the horizon.
"Looks like we'll have to spend the night here with the Brooklyn girls. It took us long enough to get here because of SOMEONE!" Kane looked at Trolley angrily.
Trolley scowled. "Its not my fault the carriage we jumped on went to the Bronx instead of Brooklyn. I guess I... read it wrong. Yah, that's what happened."
"Right..." said Kane.
"Oh, well that's too late now to fix. We'll just stay here tonight. But first I wanna go check out the boys. They're still there at this time of day!" Spunk announced and they rushed over to the docks.
The girls hid behind wooden pole on the side of the dock as they watched the boys jumping in and out of the water. And then they saw him.
Kid Blink was standing on the other side of the dock with 2 other men that neither of the three girls had seen before. Blink and the two men were both wearing suits. One of the men looked about 16 and the other looked about 30 or so.
"He's... he's not... no... I refuse to believe..." Trolley stuttered.
"I'll kill him." Kane said. "I'll kill him. End of story." She stepped out from behind the pole. Spunk pulled her back.
"No, don't." she told her. Kane looked at her with total disguist.
"You're still friends with this SCAB?" Kane asked her.
Spunk shuddered. "Ew, no. But I have a better idea than killing him. Just follow my lead both of you."
She stepped out from behind the pole and the two girls followed her. They walked towards Blink and the men stopped talking to him and stared at the girls coming towards them.
"Hello boys. How are you Blink? Long time no see!" Spunk spit in her hand and held it out. He didn't accept.
"Hun how are you? I've missed you. Where were you last night? I waited for you." Kane put her arm around his shoulders
"The newsies are talkin Blinky. And they're tellin us stuff. We came to find out. We know." Trolley glared at him.
The men looked at Blink and then back at the three girls. The girls wearing their pants, ragged shirts, and suspenders looked as dirty as all get out.
Blink blushed and started. "I... I... Excuse me." He said to the men. They walked away and into a restaurant.
"What do you think you're doing!" he shouted at them.
"We'd like to ask you the same thing." Spunk said to him.
"Now I suggest before I rip your head off and bring it back to Manhattan, you should tell us a good reason that you're a scab." She emphasized the last word.
"I found something better. More money. I don't have to scrounge for food on the streets. I have a home." Trolley cut him off.
"No, you HAD a home. The newsies were your family. Now you've turned into another Jack. What do you want to do. Move away from us too?"
"I don't know what I want. I wanted out. I got out. I'm here and I'm staying."
"Well we're not. Come on girls. Leave the scab to his money." Kane spat at him.
Blink swore. "I didn't think I'd have to resort to this, but I have no choice." He pulled a gleaming knife out of his pocket. "You can't go back to Manhattan because then you'll tell all of the newsies where I am and what I'm doing. Then they'll come and find me. They won't let me be at peace." The blade shone silver.
The girls stepped backwards. "Blink, what are you going to do with that?" Spunk asked him.
"I'm sorry girls. I have no choice." He said again. He pulled her forwards towards him and raised the knife.
"No!" the girls screamed. Trolley and Kane lunged forward and grabbed Blink's arm. Spunk pulled herself away and kicked him in the shin. With one movement, they shoved him into the water.
"Run!" Spunk shouted. The girls ran all the way back to Brooklyn, not even bothering to look back to see if he was chasing them.
