Chapter 1
I crouched low behind the leaves of the tree I sat in. He would be back soon. The handsome prince I loved. I hadn't seen him for ages. Not since before he had to go on that adventure to destroy that accursed-Oh!
My pointed ears picked up the faint sound of footsteps. He was almost here! What would I say to him? If I was able to speak at all! Even before he had left to give the message of that slimy creature's escape I had a hard time speaking to him. I was so shy. He made me so nervous. I wanted to say something smart or funny around him, but all I could do was blush.
The footsteps were drawing closer. He was very close. I carefully peered around the leaves, holding my breath. There he was. He looked the same, yet so different. He was wearing the same green tunic. His long blond hair waved in the wind. The same long blond hair. I pushed my light red hair out of my face. He looked stronger than he used to, which was not surprising, as he had had to fight so many orcs. He was also wearing a strange cloak with a leaf shaped clasp. It was a beautiful cloak. He was also carrying a new bow. Where did he get these new things?
I was so busy concentrating on him, it took me a while to realize that there was someone else with him. A short someone bearing a large beard and an even larger axe. I gasped. A dwarf! How dare he bring a dwarf here! After what that group of them put our king through years ago! Over that stupid dragon and his stupid treasure! And I could even tell that this particular dwarf was the son of one of them, I remembered from seeing drawings of them recorded in books.
This was unlike the prince I knew. The prince I knew hated dwarves. I supposed they traveled together with The King. Could he have befriended this dwarf? I decided there was nothing I could do but find out.
Silently, I leaped down from my tree. When I landed I startled the dwarf, but the prince turned calmly to look at me.
"Hello, Vilmathien. How have you faired of late?"
I took a deep breath. I was nervous already. What would I say? I tried to be calm, but he was looking at me and it made my insides turn inside out.
"Welcome back, Legolas." I replied, struggling to keep my voice strong. "Who is your... friend?"
The dwarf looked as though he didn't like me much already. He stared defiantly at me, and I stared back. If he didn't like me, I didn't like him either.
"This is Gimli, Son of Gloin. He was part of the Fellowship. He is very courageous."
Humph. I knew it! Gloin! Yet Legolas spoke highly of him, and I was willing to give him a chance, if he gave me one. I didn't think he was going to though. He was still looking at me skeptically.
"And who's this, Legolas?" Gimli grunted in his deep dwarf voice. "Girlfriend?"
Now what did he have to go and say that for?
To my relief, Legolas chose to ignore the last remark. "This is my friend, Vilmathien."
