A day on the farm: Part 1/
It was warm.
The stable smelled of fresh hay, and the usual smells that accompanied an animals living space. The only noise was a lonesome cow calling to its brethren in the field, and perhaps the scritch-scratch of mice smuggling a few choice grains from a pony's feed basket.
It was comforting though, comforting to know he wasn't alone.
The sounds of nature around him made him feel that the entire world had not gone awry, not just yet.
The cows still grazed in the pasture, the cuckoo still crowed at the rising sun.. the sun itself still rose over the mountains and disappeared behind the lake.
The world wasn't ending, not just yet.
Which gave him time; time to think of the red-headed girl who had so kindly, and without a thought given him this safe-haven to sleep for the night.
---
'Malon.. you don't have to."
"Don't worry about it fairy boy! After you helped out with all those chores.. not to mention Epona likes you!"
When she smiled, it was as beautiful as fifty-sunsets from the beach of Lake Hylia. Pure of heart.. It reminded him why he endured the exhaustion, the fighting and the losses.
It was to save this girl, to save Saria and to save the princess herself.
She had invited him warmly, without thought to whether he had failed or succeeded today. Without treating him as some sort of creature, a foreign being who did not belong.
He felt like he belonged here, and even as his small hands were bruised from the hilt of his roughhewn blade.. she would take them and kiss them.
Despite the blood.
Despite the fact he was not like her, though wished so sorely he could be.
It was not his destiny to live peacefully though, that much had been shown to him by many a prophet.
But.. Link did not want to think of that now.
Of the fate of the world possibly resting on his shoulders, and the reign of Ganondorf possibly descending.
Instead, he would live this day as best as he possibly could.
Beside Malon, maybe even as a normal boy..
The day was all too short, all too lively and full of happiness.
They had played among the bales of hay, chased Cuckoos and ran screaming as they descended down upon them. It was fun to collapse in the stable afterwards, sides aching not from wounds.. but from heavy laughter that sent tear running down ones cheeks.
She had invited him in for dinner at first, as the sun sunk lower and farther from view..
It had been so long since he had a proper meal, and although the heavily spiced Hylian food took some getting used to.. Malon's father was a good cook and Link liked the jokes he told and his easy personality when off the job.
After dinner they had drank cocoa, sitting on one of the fences outside and watching her Pony run in the moons light..
Her face looked so delicate, tipped up to the heavens.
It was then he vowed that he would make sure he was always there for her, it would give him another reason to live for aside from the Task's decreed from the princess.. Even if those held Hylia on the line.
He cared for Zelda as well, but not like this.
She was an enigma.. more like a dream then a person.
Mallon was someone he could trust, someone whose hand he could hold and be..'himself' with.
"Link.. will you stay here tonight? My dad said you'd be welcome.. he doesn't like the idea of you wandering around at night. I don't really like it either.. "
"Yeah.. I guess."
