Im taking liberties with the names and descriptions of some of the unnamed Bosses in Zelda's past. Try to remember which games they came from as I talk about them!
The flashlight flickered, causing David to freeze in his tracks. Somehow he became separated from the youth... the ghost when he fell into the trap. Now he wandered alone in these dark catacombs. He placed down his foot only to find he placed it in the remains of someone else who became lost in this maze long ago.
He could hear the creatures behind him gaining on him. The sounds of flight and the heavy thud of paws on the floor echoed all around, causing him to quicken his step. These monsters, he knew that they only existed in the early days of Hyrule, before the kingdom was built and the land was still wild. He couldn't imagine what they were doing here, in a late dynasty tomb; but they were, and they were planning on feeding on him. He began to run, his footsteps mixing with the growls and pants of his pursuers.
His footsteps were cut short as he placed his foot in a shallow break in the stone floor, and plummeted forward headfirst into a skeleton chained to the wall. David backed up against it, ironically mirroring the pose the skeleton beside him was in, with its arms upraised as if protecting its face.
Link watched as a man went running by him, the sounds of creatures close behind. He turned around, and saw multiple sets of glowing eyes coming down the passageway. Link ducked back into the passageway he just exited from, and waited for the creatures to pass. Several sets of bats flew by... well... creatures bigger then bats that had cruel claws and sharp fangs. Keese. However what drew the most attention was the bear like creature that simply ambled forward, with six sets of spidery eyes on its muzzle, and a light blue fur that could be seen even in the dim light. It fluttered a pair of useless wings in the air much as if it were a bat itself. Link recognized it but no name came to mind... somewhere, long ago, he had battled something like it. He decided to follow the creatures and stop them from reaching their intended victim.
Link watched as the light down the tunnel suddenly dropped to the floor, as if the man holding the strange lantern had tripped. The monsters converged on the light even more quickly, and Link had trouble catching up. David looked up through his arms to watch the Keese come into the range of his light, and rolled sideways along the wall as one charged downwards, trying to bring down its claws on him. He reached the other side of the corridor and rolled back where he came as another bat swooped down for a strike. This time he faltered and came to a halt in the center of the corridor, where a third Keese dealt him a blow, tearing a long gash in his right arm as he protected his face. The Keese held back as the bear-bat continued to amble forwards. As it got within 10 ft. of David it sat on its backlegs and sprang forwards, using its wings to propel it further. David closed his eyes and fainted as the bear reached the midpoint of its leap, bearing its long batlike fangs and roaring. He didn't see the tiny boy rolling under it. Link turned his sword upwards, making to stab the underside of the Bear-Bat creature as it landed. But as the sword hit the skin of the creature, it cleaved the fur as if it were made of cloth. In a puff of smoke several more Keese flew where the Bear-Bat had been in mid-jump, the outer layer of the creature nothing more then an illusion. Link remembered the name of the creature now, a Vire. It was an illusionary form created by multiple Keese whenever they got together. Link wielded his sword and brandished it menacingly at the flock of Keese, making strikes at the air to try and drive them away. After several moments, they departed, scattering amidst the tunnels.
Link picked up the strange light-stick and examined it. It had a knob on the side that allowed for the light on the end to be turned on and off. He was amazed that such a thing could be accomplished. He opened his bag and took out the magnifying glass. When he looked at it through the glass he was surprised he could see inside of the tube, and looked at the mirrors and wires that were held inside of it until his eye hurt from the lens. He heard a strange groaning, and turned the light-stick to the source of the noise. Sitting there rubbing his head was the man who had run by him, and who had tried to grab him in the tomb earlier. Link poked the man with his sword. The man jumped up with a shout and then made a motion to snatch the sword away from Link. He failed and as he leaned over to take the sword from Link he fell again, sprawling face first into the stone floor. Link couldn't help but laugh.
"Oh yes, laugh all you want boy, but by the gods you are in so much trouble for coming in here. The excavation site is closed to all spectators." Link understood the language, but decided not to talk; he couldn't be sure this man would give him up to Gannon, whoever that was.
"Oh I get it, you must be the child of one of those foreign workers. I heard they had been dressing their children up as the myths describe to help ward off curses, but I expressly forbade any of them from bringing their children." David waited for the child to respond, but when he didn't, David just shrugged and took hold of Links hand.
"Well, come on then. We shall find the exit of this place together." Link just nodded, and let himself be led by the hand by the grownup. Perhaps he would find someone else around who could make more sense.
Several hours later, David just stood banging his head against a wall, footprints in the dust leading around in all directions. "How the hell could we have passed through here already? I don't recognize this place, do you?" Link shook his head no, and fiddled with the light-stick some more. David watched as the boy mindlessly entertained himself.
"Aren't you in any way worried? I mean common, we are lost in a forsaken tomb here!" Link simply ignored David for the moment.
"Well, if you are just going to ignore me, give me the flashlight." David reached down and grabbed one end of the flashlight, and Link kept a hold on his end. When David pulled, Link did not give in. David pulled harder, and Link pulled back. Soon, the two were in a full pulling match for the flashlight.
"Give me the durn flashlight!"
"No!"
David was so surprised by the boys outburst that he let go of his end. Link fell backwards, the flashlight flying through the air until it fell with a crash onto the ground. The two were engulfed in darkness.
"Well now see what you did? We cant go anywhere now." Link crossed his arms at this, and turned his back on David.
"Well that's a fine thank you for saving your life." David was even more shocked that the boy was now talking, but he was too angry to let that get in the way.
"I never asked you to do that. I had things under control."
"Oh ya, you fainted like a princess. If that's how you have things under control, I'd hate to see what they are like when things are completely running loose." David turned his back on Link now, and they both went huffing off a few paces before returning to the location of their tiff, using the sounds of their angry breathing to locate the other.
Link took out his magnifying glass and looked through it at David. He could see through the darkness at the tall man... but strangely enough what he could see behind him was...
"Glowing footprints."
"What?"
"My lens is showing me glowing footprints."
"Your what is doing what?"
"Nevermind, just follow the sound of my voice." David found it odd as he followed the sound of the youth's footsteps. Eventually he could see a light beyond that grew brighter and brighter, a light that just had to be torchlight. The pair came out in a circular chamber that was covered in large stone painted murals depicting the legendary hero battling evil. In the center of the room was a large throne, and on it sat a stone figure of an armor covered knight with a horses head.
David wandered over to the murals, looking to see which story they were of. He recognized several of them, and soon realized that these were murals of one of the legendary hero's earlier exploits. He examined the mural of a fair princess on top of a stone slab, enchanted to sleep by an evil magician for hiding the pieces of the triforce. The stone creature was representative of one of Links most pernicious enemies, the Dark Knight Foal. The first time he and Link met, he was of human shape, however every time the two battled and the knight lost, Gannon punished him further by stealing from him his handsome face and replacing it with the head of a beast. Eventually the Knight became one of the Undead, and had multiple heads that could fly around the room spitting fireballs. David turned around to find the child staring into the eyes of the statue.
"Do you recognize him?"
Link stared at the statue a little longer... and watched as it slowly rose from the throne, the Dark Knight Foal shaking off the dust of centuries.
