Prologue: No One Knows What It's Like ...
No one knows what it's like
To be the bad man
To be the sad man... (The Who)
"I won't do it, I can't do this, Lydia!"
"Sev, I have no reason to live anymore. I am abused here, and I have lost my love. Please Severus, let me join him."
"What about me? What if I told you that I don't want you to die?"
Sad, brown eyes looked up at Severus Snape, begging for what a young Snape didn't want to provide.
"Cousin, please let me find some peace. I'll come back, I promise, just please, let me die today."
Severus choked on tears he was hard-pressed to contain. She had threatened many times to kill herself, but all she seemed to do was to hurt her self more. Her face was near skeletal with the attempt to starve to death. She had even gone so far as to make the other Deatheaters mad, so that they would kill her.
So much for entering in this hellhole to keep her safe, thought Severus, angry at him self for not protecting her, at her for asking him to kill her, at his father, who forced him into this farce, at the Deatheaters, for being the bastards they were, and angry at Lydia's lover, who couldn't bear to see her suffer, and had blown his cover, thin as it was.
He knew what he had to do, but he didn't want to do it. His tears blinded him as he said the words that would forever break his heart, that made him angry every single time he heard it.
"Avada Kedavra!" he screamed, tears obscuring his vision.
Pain showed in her face, but other than that, she was alive.
"Sev, for it to kill me you have to mean it."
"Avada Kedavra!"
"Severus, stop pissing around!"
"Avada Kedavra!"
"If you are not going to do it right, I'll run to Lucius Malfoy. He will be more than happy to have me dead."
Just the thought of that slimy git killing her boiled his blood.
"Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra! Avada Kedavra!"
As soon as he was sure she was dead, with a look of peace that he could not begin to understand, he sobbed and muttered.
"I...I have to go to Dumbledore, I... I have to stop this. The very least Dumbledore can do is kill me. I...I don't think I mind it so much anymore."
At this last sentence, he stopped sobbing. Sev Snape, the one who felt too much, had died, Severus Snape the cold-hearted had been born.
