Historians Note: This story is set after the defeat of Sauron by Isildur but before Gollum had the Ring and the Fellowship of the Ring was formed.

Readers Note: This story is based on the film, NOT the book, as I have not finished reading the trilogy yet. Please take this into account when you are reading and reviewing this story, as some of the references may not be as Tolkien wrote them.

The midday sun shone brightly over the glistening waters of Rivendell. A young elven girl walked under the shadowed tress, her long wavy hair shone a deep ebony and fell gently across her shoulders and down the small of her back like a cascading waterfall of black flecked with dark and golden brown. A small woven crown of colourful feathers and silver lace rested delicately upon her head.

The she-elf looked back at the glorious city above her, carved into the side of the mountain that provided the valley of Rivendell itself. The wonderful array of colours in the trees and the buildings of Rivendell cast a rainbow on the river and the lakes as Arwen, daughter of Elrond and Evenstar of her people continued on her journey down the path cut into the mountainside towards the Third Waterfall Lake looking around at the scenery every second bend.

At the end of the path Arwen made of way carefully over several rocks to the waters edge. Here she stood silent as the falling air, studying her reflection in the water. After 10 minutes of watching the water ripple another elf joined her at the riverbank. His hair was long and straight, tied back of his slender face and his brilliant blue eyes were filled with knowledge, no old but wise, as if they were the doors to a book filled with memories. Arwen looked up at the elf her new company but her face showed no sadness or joy to know he was there.

"Why do you stay here Arwen?" Elrond's voice was deep and powerful but filled with kindness. "You have the choice to stay in Lothlórien with the rest of you family and you mothers kin, constantly protected, yet you choose to stay on the opposite side of the mountain, alone".

Arwen looked up at him, her bright blue eyes shone with a sadness that was often shown when elves looked back on things. Living for near eternity made it impossible to live without even the slightest pain. Arwen remembered the stories of the Great Battle against Sauron. Elrond's daughter pondered her answer then looked down at the water that ran calmly over the rocks at the bottom of the stream.

"I'm not alone", she told him only with the hint of emotion in her voice, "All around me there are voices. The ancient Elvish that was lost and needs to be brought forward into the new world litters Rivendell. I choose to be without real company because this solitude gives me time to think, to decipher what was misplaced. It gives me a chance to be me, utterly and completely and to think without interruption. Solitude lets me expand my knowledge of our land and learn things from life experiences and stories rather than from a book covered in words".

Elrond smiled, his kind eyes looked down at his daughter, so young yet so wise. "Then Arwen, Evenstar of your people, learn all you like as it is the experiences in life that shape our mind- not what we learn in books."

Arwen looked at her father and smiled back. Elrond left her by the side of the pool learning, thinking and growing.
