Chapter 24
Back in the real world, Angel rubbed his eyes tiredly, as he continued to watch the sleeping Drusilla. It was getting dark now, signaling the end of another day, and yet, everyone was keenly aware that they were also one day closer to the birth. Phoebe came in the room and handed him a mug of warmed up blood. He looked up at her briefly.
'Thank you.' he said, taking it from her. He sipped it, then set it down on the nightstand. Phoebe looked at Drusilla. She was stock still, and looked almost as if she were dead. Her stomach was large, quite large.
The elf looking doctor returned regularly, listening for heartbeats. There were still two, although one was stronger than the other one.
In real time, one week and three days had passed. Everyone was on edge, since the birth was impending and no one had a clue as to when Drusilla would wake up, or whether both babies would be born alive.
'Angel, you've been sitting with her around the clock here. Leo and Piper would be more than happy to sit here a bit. Let's go to a movie tonight or something. Let's do anything to get our minds off of this...'
Angel sighed.
'Phoebe, we can't afford to take our minds off of this. We don't know where Cole is. We don't know where Spike is. Dru is here all alone.'
'She's not alone.''
Angel stood up.
'Phoebe, Drusilla is a Charmed One. Even if only one child lives, he or she will need to be protected. I owe this to Drusilla. She's in this mess because of me.'
'First of all, they'll probably be girls...'
'Wyatt is a boy.' Angel pointed out.
Phoebe said nothing to that.
'Angel, you didn't force Drusilla to sleep with two different men. Now, I know you don't feel as if you've done all you can for her. But beating yourself up over this isn't going to help anyone. Let's just get out for a bit.'
Angel was about to answer her, when his eyes moved to the open door. Phoebe turned to look as well.
Spike was standing in the doorway. He was carrying balloons and flowers. His eyes met Angel's. Angel slowly stood up.
'Where have you been? Never mind! Take your crap and get out of here!' Angel snapped.
But Spike didn't rise to the bait. He set down the balloons and flowers in a nearby chair, as his eyes moved from Angel's angry ones, to Drusilla's sleeping form. He began to move closer to her.
Phoebe tensed, waiting for the trouble that was sure to come. It was upsetting, but not because Angel and Spike were about to fight. But because Angel and Spike were going to fight over Drusilla.
'Where have you been, Spike?' Phoebe asked, repeating Angel's question. There was a part of her that resented the white-haired vampire as well. If he had just stuck around and fought for his place in Drusilla's life, they wouldn't be at this point now. This point where Angel now acted as if he were Drusilla's boyfriend, or worse yet, her husband, instead of her friend/ sire.
Spike tore his eyes off of Drusilla and looked at Phoebe, then Angel.
'I went to Paris...to see Buffy.'
Angel snorted!
'Great! Dru's going to love hearing that when she wakes up!'
'Then don't tell her, you bloody bint!' Spike snapped.
Angel's eyes widened and he shook his head.
'Oh, Dru is going to know that you haven't been here through most of her pregnancy! She is going to hear how you ran off like a bitch, and left her to go through this alone! And she is going to find out WHERE you were! So take your balloons, flowers and anything else you've got, and get the hell out of here!'
Spike's vamp face emerged and he growled! Phoebe jumped in front of Angel!
'Stop this! Stop it! Spike, c'mon! Let's go downstairs and...'
'Why?! Why should I leave?! Dru's carrying my child, not his!'
Phoebe turned to look at Angel. Her eyes probed his.
'He's right, Angel. Let him have some time alone with her.' she said quietly.
Angel continued to glare at Spike. Spike continued to keep his vamp face on. Finally, Angel allowed Phoebe to pull him out of the room. Phoebe reached back and closed the door.
Spike's face changed back to normal, as he pulled up a chair and stared into Drusilla's sleeping face.
'I'm sorry, luv. I'm sorry that I haven't been here. But you have to know it has nothing to do with you. This baby....this baby is the chance I've been trying to tell you about, luv. Our chance at something new. Our chance at a life together.'
Drusilla, of course, did not respond. He reached for her hand, and put his cold one in one of her warm ones.
'I know you're going to be angry about Buffy....but I didn't go to her for comfort, or advice. Looking at her, big with child and all, gave me hope....hope that.....Dru, you have to tell our little one to fight. Tell her to fight. I've tried to be strong. I've tried to tell myself that it will be okay if our child dies...that maybe we can have another....that is....if you still want to be with me. But I can't. I can't accept it, I won't.'
In Drusilla's time, it was still her first day at the Duvenshire School.
The Headmaster had not been in his office, when Spike had taken her by to meet him. While Spike had wondered aloud where he had gotten off to, Drusilla frowned at the sign on the door. It read Mr. Rozahtleb. Rozahtleb?! What the hell kind of name was that?!
Spike showed her to her classroom, and shyly wished her good luck for the day.
'I'll be right next door if you need me. And remember, don't let those Chadwick girls step all over you. One needs to be firm with them. Take them to task if need be.'
'I will. Thank you, Mr. Thurston.'
William nodded again, then went into his own classroom. Drusilla watched him close his door, then looked into her own. She looked through the window and saw a dark haired child slowly bring up a pair of scissors from underneath her desk, then cut off a lock of hair from another girl child!
Drusilla reached for the doorknob, just as someone grabbed her around the waist and turned her around! It was Liam, or a.k.a., Angel!
'Uh, Mr. Ashby....'
'Now, no need to be so formal, darlin', my friends call me Liam. And I think you and I will be great friends.' he purred in an Irish lilt that couldn't be described any other way but damned sexy!
Drusilla took deep breaths to calm herself, as she pried his hands from off of her waist. Why was Angel turning her on so in this dream, when he didn't in real life? She didn't feel anything like this when she was with Spike a.k.a. William!
'Mr. Ashby, now you keep your hands to yourself, there, okay? I'm here to teach....the children arithmetic. Now, you just be on your way, alright?'
But Angel pulled her back to him, molding her body to his.
'The kiddies are dumber than dirt anyway, Ms. Pressley. There's nothing more to be done with them. You should just send them off into the world and let them get by on their wits.' he purred.
'Really?' Drusilla asked, liking the the feel of his arms around her.
'Hmmm. Let's go and find a nice closet, so we can get to know one another, alright?'
And as tempting as that was, Drusilla was forced to decline, giving him a hard shove away from her! Angel looked a bit startled, as if no woman had ever refused such a 'romantic' proposal from him before. He then grinned at her.
'Tsk, tsk, tsk! You're playing hard to get, aren't you, Ms. Pressley! Well, I like that! I like it indeed!'
'Do you?' Drusilla asked wryly, more amused by him at the moment than anything else.
'I do. I need to be getting back to work, before the bastard headmaster comes around looking for me. I'll be seeing you.' Angel said, still grinning at her. Grinning in an almost ferocious manner. He then turned and sauntered off down the empty hallway.
Drusilla sighed and turned to open the door. The little girl that was missing half of her hair, was crying! Drusilla looked at the little girl who sat behind her. She still held the scissors, and looked to be about eight, with dark hair and big eyes.
'You there, girl! What is your name?' Drusilla snapped.
The girl got up and began twirling the scissors.
'My name is Posey Chadwick, ma'am, and I didn't do nothing.'
'Anything!' Drusilla corrected, before her eyes fell upon another girl, who sat directly across from Posey.
'And you? What is your name?'
The girl stood up as well. Her hair and clothing were similar to Posey's. She even had big eyes like her sister, only, she wore eyeglasses.
'My name is Peyton ma'am.'
'Peyton, did you see what happened?'
'Yes, Ma'am.'
'Well?' Drusilla asked in an irritated tone.
'I saw you and groundskeeper Ashby about to take a tumble!' Peyton giggled. The whole class snickered as well!
Drusilla was too stunned to gasp! Had the girl stood on a desk and saw her and Angel out in the hallway, through the glass window in the door? Or had she just 'seen' it, through some sort of psychic abilities?
'What do you mean you saw me? Answer me!' Drusilla demanded.
'I saw you, last night. I knew you were coming.' Peyton said, now a bit more quietly.
Drusilla was unnerved by the child. It was then that she realized that her face looked a bit like Spike's, though her eyes were large like her own. Drusilla shook her head. No! She was just imagining things! Drusilla pointed to the corner.
'Go! Go and stand in the corner! What a filthy little mouth you have!'
'So does Groundskeeper Ashby!' Peyton yelled back defiantly!
'You get back there!' Drusilla yelled, while the rest of the class tittered. Peyton stomped back to the back of the room. Drusilla turned to Posey. She pointed at the scissors!
'I want those scissors now!' Drusilla ordered the girl. The scissors came floating into Drusilla's hands just then.
Posey smirked.
'Scissors!' she yelled back defiantly!
The scissors left Drusilla's hands and went back into Posey's! Drusilla realized that Peyton and Posey Chadwick were her unborn daughters....at least unborn in the world she had left. Drusilla stared at Posey, realized that she did not quite look like her sister, which meant that her father was probably....
Cole opened the door and stood in the doorway behind Drusilla. Posey smirked at him too, just as Drusilla turned around.
'Well, I see you've met your daughters. Ours is the only one that's going to live. Ours is the only one I can AFFORD to have live!'
Drusilla stared at him, horror stricken! Surely, he did not mean to murder one of these little girls?! Not in front of all of these witnesses!
The children began to jump up and scream, as Cole or the man they knew as Headmaster Rozahtleb, produced a fireball! Peyton ran out of the corner and produced a fireball from her little hand as well!
'Get away!' she screamed. 'Get away from my sister!'
Meanwhile, Willam, a.k.a. Spike, had left his classroom, after hearing all of the commotion from next door! Poor Ms. Pressley! He knew those Chadwick girls would be a lot to handle! He should've never left her alone with them!
But when William stepped into the hallway, he saw Headmaster Rozahtleb's profile. And he looked as if his hand was on fire!
'Good God! Headmaster Rozahtleb! Are you alright?!'
Cole, distracted, turned and threw the fireball at William instead! William dived off to his right, to escape the inferno! Bloody hell! What was going on here?!'
Drusilla meanwhile, realized she had only one chance to save her daughters! She ran to them, grabbed both of their hands and was about to orb off with them, when Cole produced another fireball and hit Posey with it, just as they orbed away.....
Spike jumped, when Drusilla's eyes opened and she began to scream, lurching forward! Good bloody hell! The babies weren't due for another couple of days!
Drusilla looked around wildly and saw Spike. His hand was still in hers and she crushed it as if she were going to smash it!
'Alright, luv! It will be alright! Just let go of my hand, alright?! Dru, let go of my hand, damnit, before you crush it! Dru....'
Angel, Phoebe and Piper came running into the room! Piper looked up towards the ceiling.
'LEO!' she screamed.
Leo and the Elf doctor orbed down into the room as well.
'Get her legs!' the elf ordered.
'Shouldn't we boil hot water or something?!' Angel asked, panicked. He didn't know how Drusilla would deal with losing one baby, no matter who's it was. His stomach felt tight with anticipation, as he grabbed one of her legs and held it still. Phoebe and Piper grabbed her other leg, while Spike managed to get Drusilla to ease her grip on his hand, while helping her sit up. The elf doctor was poised between Drusilla's legs.
'Push, Dru! Push!' the doctor yelled.
Drusilla looked at Angel and the others, and then began to sob.
'Cole was there....Cole killed one of the babies....he killed one with fire!' she almost screamed.
Phoebe and Piper flinched. Angel looked at Spike, who's eyes would not meet his. He held onto Drusilla tightly.'
'Just push, luv! Just do as the nice doctor tells you and push!'
Drusilla screamed and pushed with all of her might. Soon, the doctor picked up a baby, a normal, crying baby. She handed it off to Leo and Piper, who let go of Drusilla's leg to see to it.
'There's one more.' the doctor said quietly, as she produced a weaker looking, small baby. It gave one gasp and died. The small form burst into a fireball as if it had been vanquished. Spike let out an anguished cry, while Drusilla stared at in in shock. Angel looked down.
'Uh, guys.' Leo said. Phoebe let go of Drusilla's leg and walked over to them. She still couldn't believe that goddamned Cole! She couldn't believe she had loved anyone so cruel!
'Did you see that? The other one just turned into a fireball and died.'
'I think Cole killed his own child.' Piper said
'What do you mean?' Phoebe asked, looking from her sister, to the baby. She then gasped.
The baby's face was morphing back and forth from human, to vampire. Her fangs were baby like. It almost looked as if she were smiling.
Fiathna backed away, as Belthazor looked into the cauldron of haze, numb with shock. They watched the birth from a cavern of hell, and she had actually watched the evil fiend smile, when the second baby was born.
But, that smile disappeared when he saw the baby he thought he had killed, burst into flame. If it had had any vampire blood in it at all, it would've turned to dust, not flame!
Cole began to back away. God no! God no! But there was no god in his world. Only hell. A pure living hell.
'I....I....I killed....'
'Your own child.' Fiathna said quietly. She should've felt satisfied, but didn't.
'AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!' Cole screamed, as he turned to Fiathna and obliterated the poor seer, with a fireblast! Damn her! She could've foreseen his mistake and warned him! But no! Mistake after mistake after mistake! That was her last, costly one!
Breathing heavily, he looked into the haze again. Piper had brought the baby over to Drusilla, who still looked weak. She smiled at the tiny infant. A beaming Spike touched her little hands.
Cole turned away from the happy scene. He still needed a child to give to Wolfram & Hart in order to take the CEO position from Angel. And they were still going to get one. Dru and Spike's baby would just have to do.
Back in the real world, Angel rubbed his eyes tiredly, as he continued to watch the sleeping Drusilla.
