Lucy managed to get into the ER without any further embarrassment. There didn't seem to be many people in the area, 'I hope I don't have the wrong place.' She thought. Then from behind a computer, a large man popped out.
"You the new med.-student?" Lucy nodded her head; her eyes were wide in fear. "Go to the lounge. First door on the right." The man pointed her in the right direction and slowly she walked away. "By the way, I'm Jerry."
The young woman laughed to herself 'Just like my mother.' "I'm Lucy." She continued down the hallway and found what she assumed to be the lounge. Slowly she opened the door and peeked through the crack, before slipping in. It seemed like everyone in the ER was in this room. Looking around, Lucy saw how everyone seemed to be so friendly together; she hoped that one day she would be like that too.
A woman with reddish-brown hair leaning on a crutch looked at her, blinked then began to speak. "Okay everybody, we have a few new med. students and..." the woman looked around the room. "Malucci, where's Carter and Susan?" The young man she addressed shrugged his shoulders and went back to fiddling with his fingers.
An attractive man with dark hair whispered to him, "Go find them." The young man snapped his fingers and ran out the door. Everyone stood there in silence until he came back with the two doctors. The young man leaned back on the wall, looking quite satisfied with himself.
"As I was saying, we have a few new med.-students..." the woman seemed to talk forever, her voice just trailing on and on. Lucy's eyes flickered open and shut, her mind only grasping certain parts of her speech like, respect... help... doctors... work... "And most of all, be here on time." Lucy could feel the woman's eyes on her. "Okay now get back to work." She approached the man Lucy had seen outside. "Good luck." She whispered.
Carter sighed, "Now did any of you hear what she said?" All the students shook their heads. John rolled his eyes. 'We've got a lot of work to do.' He said under his breath. Rallying up as much energy as he could, he introduced himself but didn't bother ask for their names. He was tired and his shift had only started.
.
The day passed by slowly, there was one trauma; two young girls hit by an oncoming truck. They couldn't save the girls but the truck driver was fine. Other than that, the worst thing they saw was a little boy who flipped over the top of his bike.
Carter felt like he was going to go insane. He had never been asked more questions in his life. How do you do this? Why are you doing that? What's this for? He wanted to drop to his knees and scream, but he decided to keep that for later.
"Carter." Kerri called. "How's everything going?" John gave her a blank stare.
"You can't seriously leave me with them. They are so irritating." John sighed as a med.-student approached him, spitting up questions faster than they could even hear. 'See' John mouthed to his friend. Kerri just nodded.
"Go talk to Dr... Kovac" the student agreed and scurried off.
"Wow!"
"I know it's making me crazy."
"Well now you know how we felt with you." Mark joked as he passed by.
"Don't worry Carter, it'll be fine." Kerri began to walk away. "Oh I almost forgot." Kerri explained to him what she wanted him to do and she wandered off.
John walked over to Lucy; "We need to talk." They went into an empty room. "Hey. Um..."
"What is it Dr. Carter?" Lucy asked innocently.
"Uh... it's about your..." John felt so nervous and confused to tell her this. It was so hard watching her big blue eyes wait so patiently for him. "About your... your... medical problem."
