Hidden truths

Chapter one: She stares at me

The light flooded into my room. My two, large, eastern windows released an ocean of sun which danced on my eyelids until it woke me.

"Stupid broken mini-blinds," I grumbled to myself as I attempted to find the floor with my feet while shielding my eyes from the morning sun. It is definitely no secret; I am not a morning person.

I eventually found my way downstairs only to discover an eerie silence. My brother, Matt, had stayed at a friend's house last night and Daddy is always at work when I get up. Mom is always watching a talk show while sipping tea and talking to people on the computer.

Not today. Silence. Tick tock. Hum of the fish tank. Tick Tock. The floor creaks beneath my feet. I called out for Mom and got no response. I tried again. TICK TOCK. SILENCE. I know something is wrong. My pulse quickens.

I began to run through the house, opening every door to every room. I yelled for her. Each time my shrill cry "MMMOOOOMMM!" became more and more desperate.

I finally reached the basement door. "Mom?" I asked, my voice very small and quiet, as if afraid of awakening something. I pushed open the unlatched door and slipped into the cool darkness.

Each step is colder than the one before it. Frozen dry air seems to wrap around my entire body.

I finally reached the cement floor and yank the chain that turns on the bare light bulb that hangs from the ceiling.

I turn around. She stares at me. The dry cool air is forced from my lungs and is replaced by nothing. She stares at me.
I can't move my body. She stares at me.
I can't scream. She stares at me.
I can't breathe. She stares at me.
I can only stare back.

I finally run. I run out of the basement and I run until I reach the couch in the living room. That is where I collapse and I feel my heart start to beat again. As I gasp for air, strange feelings of confusion and disbelief overtake me.

I hear a voice scream out for help only to later realize, they are my own unanswered cries of desperation.
