The hospital was different without Carter. Just his presence had a certain positive feeling that they had come to love so much and not having him there took away a bit of their happiness. Lucy was worth nothing, or so she thought. John was the most important part of coming to work. But he was gone.
Kerri herself hated the decision she had made. Though now that everything was official, it would be hard to get him back. Especially after all that happened that day. The woman felt like a walking zombie. Her mind was always somewhere else. However, she had work to do, and so did the others, so they tried their best to keep their emotions to themselves, but no one's perfect.
.
Lucy walked across the street, this time watching for cars. She had learned her lesson. The hospital looked big and intimidating like it had the first few days of her time there. Looking around at the windows, she saw a familiar face. "Jason!" she yelled up to the window. The young man's eyes stared at her, while her throat swelled with tears. "Jason!" she called again. The young man walked away.
"Lucy... Lucy..." she heard a voice whisper behind her. "Lucy..." the student twirled around searching for the mysterious voice. When she stopped turning and stood towards the hospital, she saw him. His bright eyes shining as they always did. His scruffy hair hanging down his forehead.
"Jason." She whispered. "I miss you... please don't go."
"Lucy... I'll never leave you..." extending his arm, he gave her a letter and a picture. The young man stared deeply into her eyes. "Goodbye Lucy... I love you..."
"I love you too." She said wrapping her arms around him. He was gone. "Goodbye Jason." Tears overcame the young woman as she fell to the ground.
The rocks of the hard ground cut through her pants and drew blood from her weak knees. Her body fell forward onto the ground, her arms wrapped around her face. Her small figure shook as she cried. Alone. In her hands she held protectively her gifts from her brother. Hoping that the cruel world would not take those too.
.
Inside the hospital, Abby made her way to the admit desk. "What's going on out there?" she asked.
"Out where?" Dave asked. Abby looked at him obviously. "Oh, outside. I don't know... why?"
Dave followed Abby into the parking lot. When he saw Lucy shaking on the ground, he rushed over to her. Taking her in his arms, he couldn't help feeling that in some way it was his fault.
Abby stood away from them wondering what to do. The hospital had seen a lot of slow days. Either the city was suddenly very safe or the hospital had been closed off. She soon learned that neither of her ideas was correct as three ambulances drove in.
The majority of the staff was outside with the ambulances. Lucy stood in Dave's protective arms. "Lucy," Kerri's said from behind her. "We're gonna need you on this one." The young student's face lit up.
"I won't let you down." She promised. Waiting for the last car, Dave congratulated her.
As the paramedics jumped down and rolled out the stretcher, Lucy was shocked. "John?"
