Maria grabbed the bill from the last remaining customers table and received their change from the cash register yawning along the way.

"Here you go. Thanks." Maria said handing the late night clubbers their change and thanking them for they're over generous tip. Probably too drunk to realize she thought as she watched them stumble out of the door. She shook her head and rubbed her eyes, then turned around to see Michael shutting off the cookers in the kitchen. She picked up her polystyrene cup of coffee and drained out the last dregs as she walked into the kitchen and hopped up back onto the counter in her remaining spot. She threw the cup in the direction of the bin but missed, causing Michael to shoot her an evil glare.

"You're supposed to be helping not making more mess." He growled picking up the cup at his feet and tossing it in the trashcan, and Maria shrugged in response.

"Help Maria, NOW!" Michael demanded. Maria pretended to consider this for a moment and placed her finger to her lip as if seriously considering the matter.

"Um . . . NO." She replied after a couple of seconds pause, removing her hand from her face and smirking in his direction. "Why should I?" She continued.

"Because." He answered.

"Oh because. Well why didn't I think of that one Michael" Maria commented sarcastically smacking the palm of her hand to her forehead in a Duh gesture.

"You're a real smart ass you know that." Michael stated throwing a dishcloth her way and gesturing to the stacked up dishes awaiting the dishwasher.

"Yep." She replied hopping down from the counter and making her way over to the dishwasher and began unloading it and placing the dishes on the draining board.

"Hey guys I've finished out front so I'm heading home now. See you tomorrow nights shift right Michael?" Beth asked poking her head through the hatch and smiling at them both. She was a girl from college hired over the summer to work the night shift as a waitress. Her and Michael were the only nighttime staff available at the crashdown to work the late shifts, since the all the others were high school students hell bent on having fun at night times during the summer and not feeding the drunk night clubbers of Roswell New Mexico.

"Yeah." He replied.

"Night Beth." Maria called out as she finished piling the last remaining dishes into the washer and slamming the door of it shut quickly, afraid they would all fall out it was that crowded.

"Finally you're done." Michael spoke up and Maria whirled around to see him sat in her earlier spot, and she glared at him.

"You could have helped!" She exclaimed.

"I could have. But I didn't want to. Why should I?" He asked repeating Maria's earlier words.

"Because." She copied.

"Oh because. Why didn't I think of that?" He mimicked.

"You talk about me being a smart ass spaceboy, your one yourself you know. If fact, I'd say your fifty times worse. Now lets get going, I do actually intend on getting some sleep tonight." Maria ordered walking out of the kitchen and grabbing her set of crashdown keys from her purse, Michael following he out and shutting off all the lights as he went. She locked up the restaurant and they both walked in the direction of her house in utter silence for a while.

"So?" Maria spoke up, swinging her bag by her side in nervousness.

"So what?" Michael asked glancing at her out of the corner of his eye.

"So, how are things working. You know with the whole . . . thing?" She asked, trying to find some other word for destiny but couldn't think of anything, so she just said 'thing,' cursing her self for how unintelligent she sounded.

"Um, yeah, it's not." He answered awkwardly looking at his shoes. Hasn't Max already told you." He continued.

"No. Why would he?" She questioned looking up to see her house as they rounded the corner.

"Cos you and him seem to have been pretty tight this summer. How's Liz feel bout that?" He asked and she abruptly stopped causing him to halt.

"What's that supposed to mean?" She demanded.

"I was just commenting on the fact that you two seem to have been spending a lot of time together."

"No you weren't. You were insinuating something Michael and I don't appreciate it because nothing is going on between us were friends."

"A little defensive don't you think. Besides I don't see you spending as much time with Alex as you do Max."

"Yeah well you know what there's two reasons for that Michael and they pretty much both come back to YOU. Not just you specifically but your certainly involved in some way. First off all, me and Max miss Liz since she ran to Florida to escape you guys and I needed a friend because Alex was kind of avoiding me like the plague when it was just me because of the whole destiny crap between you and Isabel. Remember that. Yeah, apparently I remind of you, which at the beginning made him kind of mad and he didn't wanna hate me. So there you go Michael that's why I'm with Max cos I needed a friend so I felt like I had no –one and he could relate. So why don't you go back to Isabel and fulfill your destiny because you've fulfilled your good deed for the day to the poor human race you like to screw up, I'm home, so why don't you go back to yours cos I'm not in the mood to debate with you in the middle of the street and four am. Goodnight." She snapped opening the door to her house and shutting it quickly behind her. Michael stood outside completely dumbfounded wondering where the hell that came from.
