Chapter 1

It was past midnight. An exhausted vampire was walking on a dark, empty alley. He hadn't drunk blood for months, every single time he had been stopped by something. Victim's friends, the police, the victim. One time he had faced the slayer, but he ran away, knowing that he would be no match to her.

The vampire heard something meow near him. He saw a cat. It looked as exhausted as he did. It was dirty, its hair was messy and it was as thin as a straw. The vampire knew he had found a perfect meal.

He reached and grabbed the cat. I didn't fight, much. It had the same glow in its eyes; hunger. The vampire sunk his teeth in the cat and drank. He didn't notice how the cat scratched him on his cheek. He didn't notice how the cat started licking the blood from the scratch. He only tasted its blood. When he had drunk enough he dropped the lifeless body of the cat on the ground and ran away. He felt so much better.

-----

Buffy staked a vampire. He had run directly toward her from an alley nearby and he still had blood dripping from his mouth.

"Remember to wipe your mouth after eating!" she yelled at the pile of dust the vampire had made. She threw the stake in the air and caught it perfectly. "C'mon, anyone else wants to be staked this night?" she shouted. "I don't have a lot of time hanging around here. I have to hit the books."

Nobody answered or appeared. The graveyard was empty. Buffy shrugged.

"Well," she said. "The store is closed now. Be sure to come in time tomorrow!"

Happily she started walking back to her home. It hadn't been a very hard day.

----

"Why are vampires so stupid?" Buffy asked her mother.

"I don't know, honey," Joyce said. "I have to make breakfast, I can't think about that right now."

"I mean, he just ran to my stake. Doesn't he have eyes?" Buffy said. "Well, he's gone now."

"Are you doing something special today?" Joyce asked.

"No. Why?" Buffy said. "Do you want me to babysit Dawn again?"

"If you could..." Joyce started.

"Fine. It doesn't seem like vampires are invading Sunnydale this week, so I can patrol a little less today," Buffy told. "Why am I so flexible today?"

"You could rent a movie and watch it with Dawn," Joyce suggested. "Something non-violent. You could use a break from that stuff. And you can invite your friends too."

"Great!" Buffy said. "But I don't think they want to watch Disney- cartoons."

"But I don't want, either," Dawn said and opened the fridge. "So no matter how badly you want cartoons, I'm not gonna watch them!"

Buffy looked angry for awhile, but her face brightened. "If I'll rent cartoons, will you sit quietly in your room as we'll watch it?"

"No way," Dawn said. "We're renting something I... I mean all of us want to see."

----

Buffy and Dawn came out of the video rental store. They had rented a comedy, or so the box read.

"I didn't have enough time to choose!" Dawn complained.

"Well, we'll see what that movie is about," Buffy said. "Willow and Xander are coming at eight o'clock and it's five to eight. We have to hurry."

"You didn't invite Riley?" Dawn asked.

"I did, but he had something else to do," Buffy told. "But come on, we really gotta hurry."

They heard a distant meow, but they didn't see a pair of yellow eyes, full of hate and hunger, watching them as they left the store.
