Katie stood and watched as Jack battled against the captain of the opposite ship. Her eyes darted between them, and she got lost in her own little world. Not really noticing anything else going on near her, she just watched as Captain Krash sliced open Jack's arm, and she winced. Her eyes continued to watch them, her mind not sure what to do. Then she spotted him—the first mate of the other ship. He was creeping up towards Jack's back. Jack wouldn't be able to fight off two strong pirates, especially not with the injury he had already gotten. Without even realising she was doing it, Katie ran up to Captain Krash and tapped him on the shoulder. As he turned around to face Katie, momentarily forgetting his fight with Jack, Jack noticed the other pirate coming at him from behind. As Jack fought off that pirate, Krash just looking questionley at Katie.

"What exactly is it that ye want, little girl? Ye shouldn't be playin' with t' big boys." Katie narrowed her eyes at the man, and, without even thinking about it, she raised her sword and thrust it inside Captain Krash.

Krash's eyes glazed over with the shock of what had just happened. Inside those eyes Katie also saw pain. Quickly taking the sword back, she backed away, shocked at what she had just done. There was a sea of 'parleys' coming from the rest of Krash's crew.

Katie felt as if she were stuck in time. Unable to move, she wasn't even sure if she was breathing, she was so shocked at killing someone. She just kept staring at his body lying on the deck, maybe even willing it to come alive again and laugh at her for thinking she had killed him. Katie was still frozen to the spot as Jack's crew hurried around, trying to obey the orders Jack was barking out at them.

As Jack looked around, seeing what needed to be done, his eyes came to lie upon Katie, who was still stuck to the spot, unmoving, staring at Krash's dead body. Remembering how she had saved him (again!) and the way she was reacting to it, he figured that it was probably her first kill.

"Ana Maria!"

"Aye, captain?"

"Take Katie down t' yer cabin an' talk t' 'er." Looking at Ana's confused face, he guessed she hadn't been around when Katie killed the man. "She killed Krash."

Ana's eyes went wide with amazement. "What? Why? I would'a thought that would be you."

"Nay, he and his first mate were both fighting with me; I couldn't handle it, and she just sort of . . .came out of nowhere, killed him, then realized what she had done. She's been routed to the same spot ever since."

"Ok, I'll talk t' 'er." Ana Maria made her way down to were Katie was, put her arms around the younger girl's shoulders, and moved her from her spot, leading her down to the cabins. As she sat Katie down on the bunk, Ana closed her eyes ** this is going to be a long night. ** Katie's eyes were still glazed over in shock, and when she eventually talked, her voice trembled, and, even though she tried so hard not to cry . . .it didn't work that way.

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* The next day ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

"Ana, where's Katie?"

"Asleep, at long last. She exhausted herself crying. She's in shock big time. Jack, she was taught people who kill go to hell. She's jest . . .scared I suppose. Not sure of what came over her, stuff like that. She'll be Ok eventually." Jack nodded at this. He felt really sorry for the girl. Jack began to wonder if he should have made her stay down below deck; at least that way she wouldn't have to live with this guilt at the moment.

"Jack." Jack's head snapped up, and he was brought out from his thoughts. Ana had been saying something that he completely missed. "Huh? What? Sorry, I was thinking."

"Jack, are ye Ok? Thinking, it didn't hurt ye too much, did it?" Jack pulled a face at Ana and she continued. "I said, when are we getting to the Dark Bridge?"

Jack grinned. "Oh, anytime now . . ."
