Chapter 1: Zaban City
At the Magnolia train station, the Onibus train is done getting repair and many people begin to hop on board the train, including Wendy and Happy as zaban city is their destination for the Hunter Exam.
As they find a seat and sit down, "Taking this job called the Hunter Exam means this will be your first big challenge, wendy." Happy says.
"It's fine..." Wendy answered with her bunny bag next to her. "Since I'm part of the guild now, this sort of job was gonna happen sooner or later and I wanna do as much of it as I can by myself."
"That's the spirit." Happy's glad to hear that, "And you won't be the only one doing this, I am too." He assures her.
She smiles at him for the assurance.
"Thank you." She responds and hugs him.
By the next hour, they are off the train and in the city of Zaban.
"So, this is Zaban city." Happy looks around.
"This is where the hunter exam takes place." Wendy looks around as well, "And according to the job request, we go to that tall building over there to get in." She points.
"Aye, let's do it." Happy says as they both started to head in until an employee came out of the building door and pointed the two towards a small restaurant.
"Hmmm?" They both asked, confused.
"You'll see, just follow me." The employees advised.
"A restaurant? Are you treating us or something?" Happy asked.
"Those who are participating in the hunter exam are to be assembled here." The employee explains.
"Huh? Really?" Wendy asked, surprised
"Yes, not one would ever expect it to be located here." The employee responds before they go into the restaurant.
After they got in, the smell of food hits the air, "Woah! It smells so good in here." Happy is drooling a bit and eyes close in delight.
"Ahh, It sure does." Wendy agrees with her eyes closed in delight as well.
"Welcome! The back room open?" The employee asks the chefs.
"What will you have?" The chef asks.
"The steak combo that opens your eyes to light, for two." The employee responds.
"Two... how would you like them?" The chef asked.
"Grilled over a low flame, until cooked." The employee replied.
"Got it, let yourself in the back room." The chef allowed them to proceed.
"Looks like he is treating us." Wendy happily tells happy.
"Aye, though I wonder... if grilled fish is on the menu." Happy drools at the thought of it.
They make their way to the back room and enter it, "Wait here." The employee advises.
"How long do we have to wait?" Happy asked.
"If your talking about the food, then that was just the password to get you two inside here." The employee truthfully says.
"HUUUHH?" Wendy and Happy were crushed by that and dramatically had their heads facing the floor.
"So... we don't get to eat?" Wendy was depressed.
"I was looking forward to it." Happy was also depressed.
"One in every ten thousand applicants have made it this far..." The employee suddenly says.
"Huh?" Wendy looks up at him after her and happy snapped out of their dramatic depression.
"Good luck on the exam." He responds.
"Oh, thanks." Wendy appreciates before the navigator leaves.
(They then feel the room moving and see electronics numbers at the top.)
"Huh? This feels like an elevator." Happy notices.
"So this why he had us wait." Wendy notices as well, "It's taking us to the main floor."
"Welp, here goes nothing." Happy says as they go down.
"Yeah." Wendy quietly agrees.
(After getting out of the elevator in 1 minute, there are lots of examiners gathered around the area.)
"So this is where the hunter exam is being held?" Wendy looks around.
"With this many examines around, It has to be." Happy answered.
The examines then all turned their eyes towards the two when they walked up.
"H-hello, uh-" Wendy was about to talk but the crowd turned away.
"Man... talk about rude." Happy stated, "The atmosphere is strange here."
"I know, everyone's so tense about this." Wendy says.
A short green man walked up to the two and handed them both white tags labeled with numbers on them, "Hello, please take a number." They both took a number(Wendy has number 412 and happy has 408), "Be sure to where this on your chest at all times. Be careful not to lose it." he said before walking off.
"Hmmm, I'll just place this on my scarf." Happy puts it on.
After they put their tags one, "Hey! you two must be new here." A short and fat man said from the top of one of the pipes before jumping down.
"You can tell?" Wendy asked.
"More or less. This is my thirty-fifth attempt at taking the exam." He answered
"Thirty-fifth time?!" Wendy and happy dramatically were surprised.
"Guess you call say I'm an exam veteran." He said.
"That's... really nothing to be proud of." Happy sweat-dropped.
"I'm Tonpa." He introduced.
"I'm wendy and this is happy." She introduced back.
"Oh, Aye." Happy nods.
"If you have any questions, feel free to come and ask me." Tonpa says and they both nod before he walked off.
"It seems to me that he goes to every new examine and asks the same question." Happy says.
"Huh, really?" Wendy looked down at him and asked.
"Yeah, and honestly, he looks suspicious too me, especially after seeing how some of the examines looked at him." Happy looks at him walking off.
"No way..." Wendy couldn't believe.
Just then, another group came to take the exams, consisting of a short boy with spiky hair, a blonde with Chinese clothes, and a tall blue-suited guy.
The short green man gave them a tag and then to pass walks up to them and asks the same question about being knew.
"See? He's doing it again." Happy notices.
"Looks like your right." Wendy agrees.
The group introduced themselves as Gon, Kurapika, and Leorio. Gon asked if there was any other examine which retook the exam many times. Tonpa began pointing out too many other contestants in the area: a fat sumo wrestler, a snake charmer, a kung-fu master, three brothers, and a huntsman.
"So he's not the only one who retook the exam a lot." Wendy says while listening.
"This exam must be really hard to get by for that to happen." Happy replies whiling listening as well.
Suddenly, they heard a man's scream. All of them, including the other examinees turned to see another examine's arms disseminate into flower petals.
"What the...?!" Happy questioned in surprise at the site.
"Did his arms just turn into petals...?!" Wendy was surprised as well, many other examines mumbled the same question.
As the man was screaming, "Oh my, how peculiar." The clown-like guy smirked a little evilly, "It seems like his arms became flower petals." He the raises a hand, "No smoke or mirrors here." All the examines were quietly shocked by him, "Do take care. You should really learn to apologize after bumping into someone." The clown-looking guy then walks off.
"That's the only reason why he did that?" Happy questioned.
"That psychopath is back again..." Tonpa mumbled.
"Again?" Gon asked.
"What does he mean by that?" Wendy said while quietly listening to tonpa talking.
"Does that mean he took the exam last year?" Gon asked.
"Number 44. Hisoka, the magician," Tonpa said. He then began to explain more about the sinister clown, "Last year, he was a vertical lock to pass the exam until he killed an examiner he didn't like."
"That's the only reason?" Wendy questioned while listening.
"It seems he got some issues." Happy stayed while listening as well.
"A-and they're still allowing him to take the exam this year?" Leorio asked.
"Exactly what I wanna know." Happy thought.
"Of course, Every year, the examiners and test content changes." Tonpa explains, " And the examiners are the ones who get to choose it. The devil himself could pass if the examiners determined it. Anyway, nobody like that guy and it's best for you guys to stay away from him as well."
"I'm starting to get that feeling, he looks crazy." Wendy says.
"No kidding, he looks dangerous." Happy agrees, Leorio also said the same thing over there.
"Oh, and a little something to mark our acquaintance." Tonpa takes out come juice cans and hands one to each of them.
"Oh, appreciated." Leorio takes one, "I was getting thirsty anyway."
"Thanks." Gon take one as well.
"Best of luck to all of us!" Tonpa says before they bump cans.
Wendy looks around and sees that some of them are smirking at gon's group.
"Huh? Some of them are grinning." She says.
"See? I knew he was suspicious." Happy agrees, "Don't tell me he poisoned those things..."
As gon sips out of the can, he then quickly spits out, "Tonpa-san, this Juice must of expired." He says, "It tastes funny."
Leorio the spits it out as well, "Seriously! That was close."
"H-huh, that's strange..." Tonpa shakes his head and tries to be slick.
"Looks like they had no poisoning. That's a relief." Wendy says.
As Kurapika dumps out the can, "I-I didn't realize the juice had gone bad, I'm sorry!" Tonpa pretends to apologize.
"It's okay, you don't have to apologize." Gon forgives, "Is your stomach okay?"
"Yes... it is." Tonpa replies.
"I've sampled all kinds of mountain grasses and plants." Gon states, "So I can usually tastes when something's bad."
"I see... that's amazing." Tonpa hates that it didn't work, "Well, see you around."
"Talkative old man." Leorio insults.
Tonpa then walks over to wendy and happy, "Hello again, wanna have one?" He offers them a can.
"No thanks." Wendy politely declines.
"We're not thirsty, besides I'm sure it tastes terrible." Happy says.
"Uh... fine." Tonpa walks off agains.
"Well, that was easy." Happy says.
"He tried to sabotage us, but that won't happen. We're gonna be in perfect shape for this exam." Wendy states confidently.
"Aye!" Happy agrees with a paw up.
In a few minutes, an alarm made all the examinees in the chamber turn their attention toward the sound. The wall in front of them rumbled a bit, then raised, revealing a man in a dark purple suit with lavender hair and a mustache with no mouth.
"What the heck?! He has no mouth!" Happy dramatically says.
"Try to be polite, Happy." Wendy whispers to him.
"I apologize for the wait. The entry period for Hunter applicants has now ended," he said before introducing himself as Satotz and paused, "The Hunter Exam Will now begin!"
All right everybody, this is my first fanfic, so I have nothing much to say here so I hope you all enjoy this HXH/FT crossover and until the next chapter.
