Rating: PG13 so far. Some violence and bloodshed. The usual.

Disclaimer: I don't own any of the Buffy or Angel characters and concepts, they are property of Joss Whedon and M.E., blah blah bitty blah. But I do totally own this particular story.

Shippiness: No real couple yet, and it's not NC17 yet, 'cause I don't know what's going to happen further along the road! Lotsa fun for Fred though!

Timeline: This takes place in 2001 in L.A, and none of the stuff that has happened in Angel happened.

Info: When Angel came to L.A. after Buffy's graduation, he worked solo
for a while, until he met Darla again, who had been brought back by
W&H and sired by Drusilla. The lawyers succeeded in their plan: Darla
made him lose his soul and the three of them have been wreaking havoc
in L.A. ever since.
Wesley bumped into Fred at the university library and asked her out
for coffee, right before she was about to be pulled into Pylea. The
two of them have been close friends ever since and are fighting demons
their own way, with some help from Lorne. Gunn is fighting demons his
way with the help of his gang.
The story runs parallel with Buffy in between seasons 5 and 6 (so
Buffy's dead, but everyone else is in Sunnydale).

Chapter 1

"What are we looking for exactly?" I asked tentatively, as we browsed through shelves and cardboard boxes.

"Hm?" Wesley said distractedly. He pulled something from out of a big cardboard box and immediately dropped it again with a disgusted look on his face. Then he looked up. "The Axe of Melchior should be here, Lorne tipped me off."

I frowned as I looked around: there were dozens of people, buying drapes, searching for tape measure and looking at plastic cases of some obscure Tupperware knockoff. "Uhm, Wesley? Are you sure this is the right place? It doesn't look like someplace where you could find the Axe of Melchior. Or any axe, for that matter..."

"Well, a lot of things can be found where you would least expect them to be. I'll go that way, you go that way," he added, pointing at opposite walls, and headed off in the most utter concentration.

Reluctantly, I started checking shelves. I was pushed aside repeatedly by an overly large woman who seemed to have a desperate need for tablecloth, so I moved along. When I'd checked the whole isle, I suddenly noticed something glistening on the floor in between a box and the back wall. I bent and picked up a tiny little axe, only two inches long and embedded with gems.

"I think I found it," I muttered, more to myself than anyone else. "This must be it. Gee, some axe this is –all this trouble for something that couldn't even give you a papercut..."

I quickly headed over to the far end of the outlet store, to look for Wesley, but he was nowhere to be found.

"Wesley?" I said. Some people turned their heads, but no Wesley. I was getting really worried, so I slid the axe in my pocket and started running around. "Where did you go," I muttered wonderingly. Suddenly, my eyes fell on a back door. Looking around quickly, to see if no-one noticed, I slowly opened the door and popped out. The door closed behind me with a clunk, and I was standing in an empty alley. It was well past sunset already! I quickly checked my watch: I couldn't believe I'd spent that long inside the store.

Something cracked.

"Hello? Who-who's there?" I asked, even though I knew that the underworldy didn't tend to announce their presence. I looked around. On the left there was a dead end, on the right, the alley came out into the street. I started walking to the right, when something splintered under my shoe. I bent down and picked it up –they were Wesley's glasses.

"What the...?" I said softly, but was suddenly interrupted by the cold voice of someone standing directly behind me.

"Oh look, dinner's here." Startled, I turned around, but before I could see anyone, a sharp pain filled my head and everything went black...
