Chapter 3

Somewhere along the line, I must have lost consciousness. The next thing I remember were some muffled sounds nearby.

"What?" I muttered slowly, and tried to move. Immediately, I let out a cry of pain and my eyes shot wide-open. My body was aching and burning all over. I gritted my teeth and managed to sit up straight without fainting. As I peered around in the darkness, I realized that the muffled sounds were coming from the dark shape to my left.

"Wh-who are you," I said softly, my voice trembling. At first, the shape just made some grumbling sounds, but then I realized that he had a bag pulled over his head. He made some shaking movements with his head, until the bag fell off and I was looking into a pair of beautiful brown eyes.

"Chill, I'm not evil- I'm seriously pissed off, but not evil. I am glad to have some company though," he added with a grin. "I'm Charles Gunn by the way."

"W-winifred Burkle," I replied. "How long have you been here?"

"Not sure. It's hard to count the days when you're here, in the dark, but judging by the numbers of times they've come down here to piss me off, I'd say about 7 nights. Hell, I don't know. How long was I asleep?"

"Almost 24 hours, or at least I think it's been 24 hours. It seems longer. We thought you were dead, me and Wesley –they dragged him out, Wesley I mean, but I don't know when that... do you know where they took him?" I continued, before realizing I was rambling on.

"Nope, they haven't taken me outta here yet. They mostly just have some fun with me. I killed some of their little buddies, so they must've figured that it'd be a great idea to use me as a stressball or something," he said bitterly.

"Oh. Well... Charles, they said something about us helping them with something. I think they must mean a ritual or a prophecy or something like that, 'cause me and Wesley are mostly all about the books, not so much about the fighting and the killing. You do that a lot then?"

"Huh? What?" Charles said, a little confused. "Oh, the demon ass-kicking. Yeah... I really don't know much about them, I just figure that the more I kill the better."

"And why..." But before I could say anything else, I heard swift footsteps approaching and quickly stopped talking. I cringed as I let myself fall back again and pretended to be asleep.

The door opened, and I carefully peered through my halfopen eyelids. Darla was dragging Wesley back inside, followed closely by Angelus. She turned to him, dropping Wesley carelessly on the stone floor.

"It's no use, he's damaged goods," she said in an annoyed tone.

"I know," the male vampire responded, "we need someone who's pure..." He turned on his heel and looked me straight in the eyes. He knew I was awake, it flashed through my mind. A malevolent grin spread across his face once more. "...Innocent."

He walked up to me, slowly but decidedly. Frightened, I opened my eyes and stared at the vampire, who was smiling down on me.

"Don't panic, I'm not like Drusilla. Once you get to know me, you'll see that I'm actually..." he said as he knelt down and whispered in my ear, "...a really nice guy." Slowly, he trailed his hand down my cheek, where the cut was. Even though his fingers were as cold as the stone floor I was lying on, the touch made my skin glow. I closed my eyes.

"Are you afraid of me?" he asked, still whispering. As I felt his body hovering above me, I slowly shook my head. I was completely mesmerized by his presence.

"Well, maybe you should be... We can do things you haven't even had nightmares about. We can make you see things... feel things..." While he was talking, his lips trailed down my neck, pausing near the vein. Still hypnotized , I gasped for breath.

"All I want, is for you to tell me something. Some thing I need to do. Will you do that?" Angelus whispered, his lips touching my neck ever so slightly. Everything suddenly became clear to me, and I opened my eyes.

I nodded slowly, and the vampire pulled back a bit. Ignoring the stings of pain, I lifted myself up on my elbows, so my face was only inches away from his.

Through gritted teeth, I spat out, "Go to hell!" and kneed him in the groin.

Angelus fell back and growled in pain, but he turned to his game face straightaway, and lunged towards me with a menacing growl.

"Bad idea," he hissed, and before I could do anything to stop him, the vampire sank his teeth into my neck.

A pain like I'd never felt before, shot from my neck down through my entire body, as Angelus started to drain my blood. With every second, I felt myself growing weaker and more helpless. After what seemed like an eternity, I slowly closed my eyes, when I heard Wesley's voice.

"Wait! Let her live, and I'll help you."

Immediately, Angelus drew back.

"Sounds like a deal to me," he said calmly, and before I lost consciousness, I heard them drag Wesley back out of the dungeon. Then everything went black before my eyes.
