Prologue

Loud. It was very loud.

He instinctually held his head, reeling from all the sudden shock.

Everything felt blurry and hazy. He has his face buried in his hands, although he couldn't see, he could hear all that's around him.

It was the sounds of a bustling city. There were car horns sounding out, he could hear the many voices of people talking, the sounds of tires rolling on the pavement. But this wasn't right. Because there shouldn't be a city. His city had fallen, there were barely any survivors. Then why was there so much sign of life?

Puzzled, Makoto looked up and saw the scene before him. Skyscrapers, buildings, cars, as well as people passing by without a second glance. So many people. He rubbed his eyes, still adjusting to the light. He looked around a second time, overhearing conversations in his language. Without a doubt this was Japan. But how? He thought.

The tragedy had devastated his home, the city he had lived in had become a shadow of its former self and everything was left to ruin. Even the very air itself could kill. There is no way this place could have survived it.

But then he noticed something much stranger, the people themselves. Most looked like any normal human being he is familiar with but there are others who bear horns, some had sharp teeth, and some so distinct and strange that they didn't resemble a human at all. Yet everyone walks on by as if such a thing was natural, nothing out of the ordinary.

People started to look at him strangely, he wondered why. Until he realized it was likely because of his intense staring. He held his head low in embarrassment and decided to walk a small distance away.

While he was at this, his mind started to race with questions. Had he travelled back in time? No, that's impossible. There are people that looked so...strange, he had never seen anyone like that in his past. Then is this a dream? He stopped in his tracks to pinch himself. It hurt, but it wasn't enough. He slapped his cheeks which resulted in a painful sting, answering his question. Again, he was spotted by random bystanders giving him a mix of concerned looks and suspicion. Deciding to ignore them, he checked his pockets for potentially something, anything he was familiar with.

Luckily, his Ultimate ability had come in handy when he felt his phone in his pocket. His eyes lit up with hope as he pulled it out. He pressed the power button, hoping with all hope that his phone had battery left.

To his relief, it turned on and with 89% battery left to spare. He wasted no time going through his contacts when he saw his Dad's number. He managed to just stop himself from calling him before remembering. It was an old habit, he had always called his dad whenever he needed help. But after what happened, he hadn't managed to contact him in weeks...

This is not the time, he said to himself. Forcefully shoving his feelings aside, he scrolled until he found Kyoko's number.

She might not be of any help in this situation, but he needed all the help he can get, even if it was just to hear her voice. He held his phone to his ear and waited. It kept ringing and ringing, he felt his heart beat faster with every ring, every second that no one responded.

Ring Ring

He was starting to lose hope that anyone would even answer, up until he heard,

beep.

He let out a small laugh in relief, he's going to get help! He doesn't have to face this alone anymore, "Kyoko! You wouldn't believe how happy I am to speak to you! Listen, something's not right. And I don't know what's going on, please I need help."

...

"Kyoko?"

...

"Kyoko, are you there?"

...

"Did something happen? Please say something!'

...

The silence ate at him. And his once overflowing well of hope was very quickly draining.

"Kyoko please say something if you're okay!"

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

Up until this moment he had kept his voice moderately calm, but his voice was getting desperate.

Something was wrong, very, very wrong and every fiber of his being was screaming it at him.

This wasn't like her to answer and not to sah anything.

"Kyoko!"

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

"SAY SOMETHING GODDAMMIT!"

Tears were welling up in his eyes. The concrete beneath him was starting to blur.

People's attention immediately snapped toward him at his sudden outburst. They looked toward him with concerned eyes. But he didn't care, not when his friend could be in danger.

"Kyoko, please tell me you're okay."

...

...

...

...

...

...

...

"Something, anything..."

His voice was dry, and his cheeks were wet with tears. He felt weak, but he still didn't want to give up, but what came out was nothing more than a whisper.

"please. i don't know what to do."

...

...

To his surprise, out came a response. Unfortunately for him, the voice wasn't hers.

"Makoto Naegi"

The voice sounded male and young. not dissimilar to Makoto's voice.

"h-huh? Who is this? You're not Kyoko..."

"No, but you have to listen to me. Y-"

Pure static interrupted the voice, before a painful high pitched ring pierced Makoto's ears.

Out of pure instinct and for the sake of his bleeding ears, he immediately ended the call.

He checked his phone again but very quickly noticed,

His phone wasn't working anymore.

"nonononoNONO!" He shouted, slamming his fist into the nearest concrete wall before swearing under his breath.

Huffing and breathing deeply, he only now noticed the amount of attention he had drawn. The random bystanders looked away and made haste in their steps the moment Makoto saw them. Leaving him alone where he stood.

He was lost.

Lost in a foreign place, with seemingly no one to turn to. Left with one burning question.

What is he going to do now?
