...

Dad hadn't cried at the funeral.

Johnny had, and so had his grandparents as they said goodbye to their only daughter. But not Dad. He had remained silent, even as Mum's casket was lowered into the ground.

Three days had passed since his mother had died, but to four-year-old Johnny Bennett, it felt like it had been forever.

After the funeral, Dad had immediately gone back to his job, and Johnny who had spent the last few days home from school was left to be looked after by his grandmother, Lucy.

Grandma Lucy was Mum's mother, and she always seemed to act a bit strange around Dad. She never really talked to him unless she had to, and even then she seemed to say very little. Johnny thought it might have made his father feel bad because he might think Grandma Lucy didn't like him. But Dad almost never said anything to her either, unless he had to. So, maybe it was just a grown-up thing?

Either way, Johnny missed his mother. She had been the one he had spent the most time with. But he had also spent time with his father, and since he was hardly ever around, he began to miss his father too.

Dad was a mechanic and he worked most of the day in a garage somewhere in town, with Johnny's two uncles Stan and Barry. Before Mum had died, he still worked most of the day, but he didn't stay gone as much as he did now. And whenever he got home, he made a point to spend time with his son.

Suddenly, Johnny heard the front door open, and immediately he felt a flicker of excitement.

Dad was home!

As the small gorilla padded down the hall to the front room, he saw his father come trudging through the front door.

Grandma Lucy, who had just sitting on the sofa reading a book, looked up and wrinkled her nose as though she smelled something bad. Johnny figured it was probably just the oil and grease on Dad's clothes.

This brought a giggle from the boy as Mum had often joked that she would make Dad stay outside until she sprayed him down with a hose.

"Oh no you don't," she'd say. "You're not coming in here smelling like that."

"I'll smell better when I've had a shower, woman," Dad would say back. "What do you want from me?"

"For you not to stink up this house. I swear, Marcus, one of these days I'm going to cut you off at the door and spray you down outside with the hose."

Mum would then toss her head back and laugh, and Dad would playfully glare at her before laughing as well.

But the feeling vanished as quickly as it had come. Mum was gone now, and Dad seemed to barely notice Johnny. If he did, he'd usually just mutter a word or two before stalking off to what had been his and Mum's room.

"Hi, Dad," Johnny greeted as cheerfully as he could muster. "How was work?"

"Long," was the only reply and before Johnny could say another word, Dad turned to Grandma Lucy. "Same time tomorrow then?"

"I suppose so," Johnny heard his grandmother utter with a sigh.

With that, his father snorted and disappeared around the corner and down the hall.

A few minutes later, Johnny flinched as he heard the door to his parents' bedroom slam.

Grandma Lucy gave him a sad smile as she gathered her things to go home. As she made her way to the front door, she paused to give her young grandson a hug and she kissed his head.

"It's going to be alright, sweetheart," she said, gently cupping his cheek with her hand. "Don't worry about that grouchy father of yours. He's always been like that."

Johnny said nothing to this, but gave his grandmother a weak smile.

As the front door closed, the four-year-old gorilla sighed and let himself fall down on the sofa.

Maybe Dad was just tired. Yeah, that was it. Things would be better in the morning.

Right?
