Bye Bye, Baby
Chapter four
Kagome yawned softly as she awoke, the morning sunlight filtered in through the window and hit Kagome squarely in the eyes. She squinted and tried to turn away from the light but eventually nature triumphed over Kagome's fruitless attempts to reenter dream world. She glanced at Moriko, who happily dreamed away beside her mother before pulling herself out of bed and slipping into her slippers. The events of last night still played fresh in her mind and she hesitantly cracked the door open. She moved the heavy wood ever so slowly and the floorboards creaked beneath her slippered feet.
She glanced at the white door that would lead her to Moriko's room and she gulped down the lump growing in her throat. What if she'd let a mass murder sleep right next door to her?
She knocked on the door slowly, her knuckles rapping against the vertical wooden board. There was a moment of silence minus Kagome's small knockings. Finally, a grunt was heard in the other room and the shuffling of feet as it carried their way across the floor. The door open and Kagome was met with the gorgeous man who had dubbed himself Inu yasha. His hazy purple eyes, laced with sleepiness, regarded her hesitantly. His black hair, once damp and plastered to his body, now was puffed up in odd angles, some of it covering his eyes, others sticking up above him like a TV antenna, the long wisps that were over his ears seemed to be bent at a forty five degree angle. He raised a dark eyebrow questionably and yawned again, she noticed his canines seemed slightly pointed, more pointed then normal. He was certainly an odd man.
"What is it?" he snapped and rubbed his eyes, the purple orbs squinted together as the morning sunlight hit him head on. Kagome bristled at the rudeness in his voice. He scratched his head and long black strands seemed to relax and fall at his lean shoulders.
"I hope you slept well. Now leave," she ordered. Ok, that was a little rude, she admitted that much, but she was not going to put her only daughter in danger. Not a snowballs chance in hell!
"What?" he barked and his beautiful lavender eyes turned into ice, the purple haze staring at her blankly for a moment before it ignited in a hidden flame.
"I-I think you heard me," Kagome said, determined to have this stranger leave her house and to keep the quiver out of her voice. "Get out of my house, and never come back. I was kind enough to let you spend the night here. Damn my bleeding heart. But now its time for you to leave," she pointed to the white door that would lead out of the apartment as if that would prove her point. "Now!"
But to her ultimate dismay, the stranger crossed his arms, gave her a glare and smirked. His beautifully white teeth and his handsome smile didn't seem to faze Kagome at all, no, it was when he began to chuckle that she felt her knees wobble and her heart speed up. Great, she had roomed with a psycho maniac all night long…
"I think you fail to see the point, Mr.…erm…Inu yasha," she said, forgetting his last name for the time being (or perhaps he never said his last name…she couldn't remember). "I really need you to leave."
"I think its you who's blind," Inu yasha smirked and retreated back to his room. Kagome frowned but followed the psychotic man into her daughter's former room. "Because…you…don't…have," he said slowly as he dug around his suitcase, Kagome's eyes were transfixed on his rear end and she felt her eyes narrowing at the thought of how he kept it so tight. She tore her gaze away and mentally berated herself for not taking the situation seriously. She had her daughter sleeping in the other room for God's sake. "…This…!"
She looked in shock as he pulled a document from his suitcase. She could feel her blood run cold and she gulped as he thrust it in front of her face. With shaking hands, she took the paper and began to read it. Her face went white.
"The-the-the—"
"Deed to the apartment?" Inu yasha said casually with the same wicked smirk. "Why yes, yes it is. So, I hope you had a nice sleep. Now get out," Kagome felt herself black out and fall to the ground in a faint.
Kagome found herself waking up again in bed, the noonday sun hit her face again and forced her from dreamland for the second time that day. Small giggles of her daughter filtered through the walls and Kagome sat bolt upright. Her daughter was alone in the apartment with a strange man! Kagome's protective streak soon controlled her whole body and Kagome felt herself engulf in flames of fury. She didn't even acknowledge the fact that she was in a bed and instead started stomping towards the door. Another giggle and Kagome's eyes narrowed as she grabbed a lamp and yanked it from its socket. She cradled the hard metal in her hands and turned the door.
"PERVERT!" Kagome screeched as she saw Inu yasha sitting on the couch next to her little baby girl. Inu yasha's eyes widened as Kagome started stomping towards him with her weapon above her head.
"Whoa, whoa, hold on lady, what the hell," he ducked from a furious swing on Kagome's part, "Is wrong with you?"
"What's wrong with me?" Kagome screeched and grabbed her daughter, whipping the small child behind her. "You disgusting pig!"
Inu yasha looked genuinely surprised, but Kagome was too enraged to really care. "First you come in the middle of the night and scare the living crap out of me, then you refuse to leave after I give you hospitality, then you tell me you own this apartment and then you molest my daughter! YOU ARE A SICK FREAK!"
"What the hell is wrong with you lady?"
"You're a pompous jerk!"'
"Pompous? I'M POMPOUS?" he snarled.
"Yes, you're a pompous old fool! You're conceited, narcissistic, self-conceited, stuck-up, vain, vainglorious, highfalutin, hoity-toity, pretentious; presumptuous, self-centered, selfish; flaunting, flossy, ostentatious—"
"And you're domineering, high-handed, imperative, imperial, imperious, magisterial, overbearing, peremptory—"
"Arrogant, rude, violent—"
"I'm violent? You're the one who's violent—"
"Blockheaded, dull, stupid, arrogant, egotistical little bastard!"
"Uh oh, Mom, looks like you swore," Inu yasha's lavender eyes danced happily as Kagome's eyes widened and she turned in shock at Moriko who stared with wide eyes.
"Mommy used big words at the funny man," Moriko said in awe.
"If you even repeat one of those words, Moriko, there will be consequences," Kagome panicked, "Go to your room, sweetie, the grown ups have to talk."
"Ah…your no fun, Mommy," Moriko pouted but left…after waving to Inu yasha. Kagome waited patiently as she stood and waited. Finally, after the clicking of the door, Kagome turned icy eyes towards the disgruntled man.
"I think we're going to have to reach a compromise, here, Inu yasha," Kagome said crossly, her hand still gripping the lamp like a lifeline.
Inu yasha crossed his arms and sent her a glare before nodding.
"You say you own this apartment," Kagome waited for him to nod, "And I still own this apartment." Inu yasha frowned. "Obviously we are victims of misunderstanding and you either were fooled or I was fooled. Which is it?"
"Well, obviously you," Inu yasha said with a shrug. "Kouga told me he was going to Italy and that his home would be open to me." Inu yasha failed to see Kagome shutter at the mention of neither Kouga's name nor the way her eyes sparkled in the morning sunlight as she fought to hide her tears. "He sent me all information and gave me the deed via fax machine…so…um…I wasn't aware that you were going to be here…"
Kagome bit the insides of her cheeks to keep from screaming at this man before her. "Fine, fine, Kouga was a sleazy bastard…you're totally not at fault here," she said sarcastically.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Inu yasha snapped and glared at the woman before him. "How the fuck was I supposed to know that he had rented it out to another family?"
"He did not rent it out to another family," Kagome said crossly.
"Oh really?"
"I lived here with Kouga!" Kagome snapped then covered her mouth. She hadn't wanted to blab her relationship with Kouga to this man. She glared daggers at him and crossed her arms.
Inu yasha, after getting over his shock only stared at her. "I knew that 'my husband is sleeping' last night was bullshit," he said coolly. "So, why are you still here…if he left?"
The lamp came crashing dangerously close to his head and he jumped in surprise. He turned to look at the thrower, but her head was bowed and her fists were clenched. "Shut up," she said tensely and her shoulders tensed more as she resisted the urge to hit the man before her.
"Hey, hey, don't go psycho on me lady, I was just asking!" Inu yasha said, ever the sympathetic soul…
Kagome clenched her eyes shut; the familiar lump in her throat was beginning to be painfully obvious. She felt like she was going to cry. Not only had Kouga abandoned her, but also he had sold her home to a complete stranger. What did he expect her to do? Move to California as if nothing had happened? She wouldn't survive there without him. Speaking of California, she'd already missed her flight so it didn't matter much! Just a few bucks WASTED because of him. She sniffed and threw her head into her hands, fighting the urge to break out into tears.
Inu yasha stared uneasily at the near-crying woman. He had never been the luckiest guy when it came to girls. Sure, he'd had girlfriends in the past, but…he wasn't used to making a girl he didn't know cry. He looked around the apartment uncertainly.
While awaiting Kagome to awaken, Inu yasha had spoken to the little dwarf they called a child, Moriko, or something like that. He had deduced from the child's behavior that she was between the ages of five and eight. Wasn't sure where though. And ever the blabbering and jabbering soul, Moriko had declared that Kouga had left mommy for a girl named Italy. Inu yasha would have found this comical if the topic at hand hadn't been one of his long time rival/friend, Kouga.
In fact, weeks earlier, Kouga had contacted Inu yasha asking him if he was still interested in acting. Inu yasha, who wasn't that well known yet…in fact…no one really knew who he was…had jumped at the chance of having an apartment in New York. Broadway, people! He had explained to Inu yasha that he was selling his apartment, since he was offered a very good job in Italy. Happy, and also slightly jealous, Inu yasha had accepted the apartment without hesitation.
He didn't know he'd have to deal with an over emotional woman, though. Kouga had failed to mention that.
And apparently, according to Moriko, Kouga was her Daddy. And this Kagome was her Mommy. And Kouga had left Kagome alone. With a daughter. Inu yasha twitched in annoyance, how could Kouga do that? Maybe he had been kidnapped and forced against his own will to write 'the letter' as Moriko called it.
During Inu yasha's ponderings, Kagome had burst out crying.
"Ak!" Inu yasha soon realized that the woman was having a mental breakdown in his living room and rushed to her side. Hesitant to really DO anything, however. "Hey, stop it. Stop crying."
"Shut up," she said crossly.
Inu yasha rolled his eyes heavenward. Typical. Simply typical.
"Fine!" Inu yasha huffed and stood up, crossing his arms and trying to ignore the emotionally unstable Kagome.
He stood for a few moments before falling to the ground once again. Kagome made small attempts to bat him away, but her fists proved fruitless against his muscular chest. "Go away…"
"I can't," he said crossly, "And I take it neither can you. I think maybe, perhaps we can make a compromise?"
"…I'm listening," Kagome wiped her eyes and sat up to look at him, his lavender eyes locked with her blue ones before they moved away to gaze around the apartment.
"Ok, so obviously Kouga had played us both for fools, no offense towards him or you," he said quickly noticing Kagome's glare. "So, there's no way I can go back to Denver, I don't think I can get a house in such short time, and you can't leave because you can't find a house in such short time. Technically I own the apartment, so…I'm willing to let you stay here." He couldn't help but smile as her face brightened in hope. "As long as you pay half the rent."
Kagome bit her lip and stood up, Inu yasha followed suit and they both stood uneasily in front of each other. After a long pause came, "Ok."
Inu yasha smirked, "Good. And since its my apartment, there's going to be some rules." He began walking around the apartment and Kagome followed him, slightly apprehensive. "Number one," he said as he flung the door open to reveal the only bathroom in the apartment. Kagome's underwear hung on the bar that held the shower curtain and Kagome felt her face grow hot. Inu yasha marched forward and began pulling them off and tossing them at her, trying to keep as little contact with the undergarments as possible. "Do not leave your underwear lying around, if you call me a pervert you can't give me scenarios where I can be a pervert."
He continued walking to the kitchen and opened the door of the refrigerator. "These shelves will be yours and these will be mine, don't take any of my food," he said nonchalantly, "I only eat organic food, so don't expect me to eat your cooking and compliment you." Kagome fumed but said nothing; after all, he had the power to kick her out.
"Also, every morning I meditate, don't like it? Deal with it," he shrugged and walked towards his room. "Also, I sleep in the nude, so, unless you want your child permanently scarred, I advice you to not let her come into my room at night."
"Like I'd let her any where near you," Kagome huffed, firmly annoyed by the man.
"Good, have a nice day, ma'am," he said and promptly slammed the door in Kagome's face.
"Yeah, well…fuck you!" Kagome snapped at the door before marching away to unpack some boxes.
