Another firework screams across the sky. Somewhere outside of her apartment happy couples are being captivated by the hisses and fizzes, sparks and pops of the bright lights in the sky as they sit on red-and-white-checkered blankets. Somewhere they are eating ice cream and hot dogs and generally being the epitome of patriotism, unlike her. She is choosing to spend her Fourth of July weekend in her apartment with boxes of Chinese noodles to keep her company and a television to keep her awake.
Flashes of red and green illuminate the pile of empty takeout containers in the corner. She waits for the telephone to ring, waits to hear his voice on the other end asking her to come down and watch the fireworks with him.
Nonono, he's watching them with his wife this year, remember?
Her stomach sinks as she remembers his goodbye, standing in the airport as she struggled to put into words all that she had to say as his wife stood behind him, gazing on disapprovingly. He had given her a kiss on the cheek before boarding the plane, calmly responding to Maria's cries of outrage with "I don't want to fight with you" and a peck on her cheek, too.
Her hand rests on the arm of the sofa just in case the phone might ring any minute as she continues to watch the fireworks through the thick glass of the television screen.
Always looking from the outside, never on the inside.
