Act 5, scene 2 [Enter Demetrius and Helena]

Demetrius: The forest's enchantments cast their spell on me,
In addition, when the motion of my heart did sway,
My love was meant for no one else but thee
So one year ago today
A man for thou I would soon be

Helena: 'Twas always my fancy to be a maiden for thee
And now my dream is reality
Ev'ry step I take
Every movement I make
Will be not without thee
And ev'ry child of mine
Will be a child of thine

Demetrius: Helios[1] has left long ago, and I am weary from the walk. Let us lie here under the flowered tree to sleep, my love.

[They fall asleep underneath the tree, and Robin Goodfellow enters]

Robin: The flowers under which the lovers lie
Contain an antidote for true love's spell,
And if the nectar should touch his eye
It will undo his love that binds them well

[Robin tries to pluck the flower above Demetrius off the tree, but it falls upon his face. Demetrius awakes and Robin runs off]

Demetrius: [rubs eyes] I know'st not the length I slept,
But know'st I the visions I resent
I dreamt that Helena was my wife
And for reasons unknown, I liked this life
I loved Helena just as before
And my love for Hermia was no more
'Twas not imaginable at all,
But many dreams are strange and magical
We were a happy pair,
Her and me,
Mayhap it was meant to be
But it was but a dream
Though realistic it did seem,
Why I stand here I do not know,
But when Helios awakes, away I shall go [Demetrius lies down to sleep once more, and Helena wakes as the sun rises]

Helena: Awake, my love, for today will be a merry one. Theseus has arranged an anniversary celebration for Hermia, Lysander, Hippolyta and us.

Demetrius: Anniversary? Then we are wed?

Helena: O, Demetrius, you do jest! You know we were married on this day!

Demetrius: Then this must be my dream,
Yes, that way it doth seem
For I did not marry you,
Nor will that ever be true
But what still puzzleth me
Is that in my dream I loved thee,
But that be not true,
Now I loathe you

Helena: Nay, speaketh not these words, 'tis unkind and I will have none of it at the party. Now come, for we must leave for the festivities. [She exits]

Demetrius: She may speaketh the truth, for I remember'st not what is real and what is a dream. I shall attend the party and pretend all is well. I will be kind to Helena, she deserveth no harm. Perchance Hermia and Lysander have married. Yes, that doth seem true, for if I married Helena, then Hermia's father cannot object to their wedding, as I am now wed. O, Lysander, cursed be thy name! I wish not to wed Helena, but Hermia I love. Yet now 'tis not conceivable, for my love would be unhappy without her Lysander, as I without her. No, my heart will not let her suffer so. I shall not stay for Helena, for my life would be hell. O, why must true love hurt'th so! Love is no dream, but a nightmare!

[Helena enters ]

Helena: Come, my love, or we shall be tardy;
Thou cannot miss thine own party,
Thou art my love, after all that was said?
[sounds worried]
You said only yesterday that you were glad we wed
But now on this morn,
Your hate you hath sworn

Demetrius: No my dearest, I did jest. Do not fret, Helena, for I love thee just as I always did. Now let us depart, our party awaits. [Helena exits] Demetrius: 'twill be a bother to play these games. I would it be Hermia who love'th me so!
