Stalking

By Leif

Duo froze, every muscle in his body tensing, fight or flight instincts hammering at him, but he trampled them mercilessly. His target was mere yards away, down the hall and a few rooms over. If he could make it there undetected... Mission Accomplished. Deal with the target and dispose of the evidence. But if he was caught? It'd all be a bust. A big one.

The God of Death was not going to let himself get caught on such a simple mission. Relaxing muscles just a little, Duo slid one foot gently down the hallway. Easy, slow, stalking steps. Each movement controlled down to the last twitch of muscle and sinew. He made a few more feet of progress before the sound of a door opening and closing somewhere behind him stilled him once again.

Whoever opened the door apparently hadn't even looked down the hallway towards the braided boy, instead heading with heavy footsteps in the opposite direction; to Duo's immense relief. But he remained still until he heard another door open, and the footsteps recede.

Breathing shallowly, barely a whisper of air making it past the boy's lips, Duo once again began his stalking. Closer now... a few feet to the door that led to his target and the end of the mission. He was a mere shadow in the hallway, less then a shadow. He blended in like one of the walls, long years of practice on the streets and as a stealth expert giving him the experience necessary to remain nearly invisible even when he had no more cover then the dim lighting.

Taking the last step towards the room that housed his target, Duo paused right outside the door, listening to the targets movements. The target was not a force to be taken lightly, the man beyond the door was incredibly dangerous, had killed perhaps as many, if not more, people then Duo himself. And Duo did not have any advantage like drugs or nerve toxin that he could use, once he stepped through that door. His best bet was the element of surprise, which he believed he still retained... Though one could never be too cautious. The target he was stalking was known for his more the natural senses.

After a full three minutes of listening to the targets movements, Duo determined he had, in fact, remained undetected. Grinning evilly to himself, Duo started to move into the targets room when disaster struck.

Eyes widening in horror Duo stood in the doorway, shocked, betrayed by his own body just as he was about to complete the mission. His stomach had growled; the noise echoing too loudly in the silence that followed it.

The target turned towards the door, spotting the Gundam pilot with a mix of surprise and amusement obvious on his features.

"Good morning Duo." The target said brightly, still holding the spoon he'd been using to stir the pancake mix with.

"... Er. Hi Quatre." Duo looked down and away, rubbing the back of his neck, severely embarrassed. His mission had gone so badly wrong! How? His own body!

"Breakfast'll be ready in a few minutes. Would you go set the table? The others should be down soon." The Arabian blond turned back to his cooking, refraining from laughing at Duo's stricken expression.

Shoulders slumping, Duo nodded mutely, going to fetch the plates and silverware. And he'd been so close to sneaking up on Quatre and stealing some breakfast, too.

Sighing heavily Duo went out to the dining room, starting to set the table. "Mission failed." He muttered under his breath, settling down to wait for Quatre to serve breakfast.
