This is a poem I wrote for English. (Obviously) I mean who in their right mind would freely write a fanfic about the Odyssey?! The intro passage is from the end of book twenty; there is foreshadowing about how Odysseus is going to slay the suitors, which is what my poem is based off of. It's written from the suitor's POV. On with it then...

"...they laughed as they resumed their dinner,
a fragrant feast, for many beasts were slain—
but as for supper, men supped never colder
than these, on what the goddess and the warrior
were even then preparing for the suitors,
whose treachery had filled that house with pain."
(The Odyssey, XX. 434-439)

Dinner Reflection

My heart is heavy with fear.
But I should have the right to be afraid
When I know not whether I am
Crying tears of mirth, or blood from these eyes...

Why am I laughing?
Is it that a god has turned my blood to poison?
I cannot breathe, cannot see
We are surrounded by a black fog, never-ending.

I should not have come here—
Zeus is angry.
The air reeks of rotted bone and blood;
Shades are near.

It does not matter now what I do or say;
We are all one.
Sad how a life must end so simply—
Death by association.

The prophet confirms it,
But even after he leaves
The mood does not change.
The house has gone stale and grey.

I turn back to the feast.
The meat is glistening with—what?
My stomach turns
As I sink my teeth into the meal.
