The war between Scanra and Tortall ended the moment Numair cast the spell. All the Scanrans on the battle field died without explanation. All Tortallan knights, warriors and soldiers were unharmed yet shaken. What evil spirit had caused their enemies to die that quickly or were the gods on their side. The question stayed on their minds for the rest of the night.

Daine woke suddenly, Numair's voice booming in her ears. She turned hoping to see him lying beside her, sleeping but of course he was not there.

Shayla, Daine and Numair's oldest daughter woke. Her body shook, the powers that let her see the past present and future were sometimes very helpful but now they were not. She saw her father's crumpled body lying on the ground of a strange place that she had never seen in her entire life.

In the palace, her sister Sarralyn woke to the early morning sunshine. Her body refused to move but she knew she had too. As a young squire she had her duties. She hoped that her knight master Lady Knight Keladry of Mindelan would be forgiving if she was late. She wished to stay in bed all day long were she was warm but her stomach protested. Oh well, she told herself, if Kel could do this so can I.

The twins Kellie and Toby were already awake. They were down in the kitchen. Being only 5 years old they had a right to be there. Kellie being the one with the Sight saw their mother weeping in her room. "Oh no," she said to her sister, "something is wrong!" They ran to their Mother and Father's chambers to see what was wrong. Their Mother was there crying with all her heart. She had found Numair's letter.

It read:

Dear my beloved Daine and my beautiful daughters,

I love you all but the war between Scanra and Tortall will not end until I cast my last spell ever. I love you all but I must do this please forgive me for this will be my last act to ensure that your future is safe.

Love from,
Your dearest father and husband.

Daine's anger and sadness were too great. She walked to the window ledge, her mind was made up. She stood for a second; unaware that two of her children stared at her, scared for their mother's safety. She jumped and changed into a magnificent red dragon.
