Chapter 2: What if

"And then Stacie will ask Ryan to the prom," five-year-old Lana explained, her blonde pony-tale bobbing up and down.
"What about him?" asked little Mia, also five, lifting up a male doll in an orange shirt.
"That's Josh. He'll ask Lana to the prom." She held up a blonde doll in a green dress to Mia.
"What about Mia?" the brunette little girl asked. Her doll was wearing a white shirt and pink skirt.
"Mia can go with...Chad Smith! He's Josh's best friend." It was true. Chad was the second cutest kindergartner.
"OK," Mia agreed. "Where's the red dress?"

Present:
"So now you mom's pregnant with Mr. Gianini's baby?" Lana asked, her long blond hair covered in foil, and in a dryer.
"I KNOW. How gross!" Mia giggle from the manicure table.
"At least you can get a passing grade in Algebra!" offered Alisha, one of the cheerleaders who was getting her eyebrows waxed. "Ouch!"
"You think?" Asked Mia.
"Duh!" Lana said, flipping through her magazine. "Ooh! Look at this dress! It looks just like the one our Barbies had!" The three girls giggled.
'I'm glad I have Lana as a best friend,' Mia thought. 'She's so cool!'
