From the time her father told her of Hogwarts, Luna hadn't the faintest idea which one house she could belong to. Her mother had been in Ravenclaw, and her father in Hufflepuff. A distant cousin of hers had been in Gryffindor several years ago, before she had graduated and had gotten married to yet another Ravenclaw.
"But Daddy, what about Slytherin?"
"No Lovegoods have ever been in that house, darling," he says with a smile, and Luna is confused.
Luna is quite glad that someone else is available to make such an important choice. She could never do it on her own. Gryffindor seemed like a fine choice; scarlet was her lips, even without old tubes of lipstick, and gold was the blonde in her hair. Or Hufflepuff; black wasn't very exciting, but Daddy always said she had long, black eyelashes that poked him when he kissed her, and yellow was the colour of her favourite dress. Even Slytherin. She could be the first Lovegood to do it. Silver was the colour of her skin in the moonlight and green was the grass and the stains on her clothes. That would do nicely, wouldn't it? Silver skin and green grass. She thought about it.
Ravenclaw was her mother's house. Bronze was the way her cheeks never glowed and blue was lost in a sea of silver in her eyes. Just this once, she could do without silver skin.
The Sorting Hat was quite pleased.
