"Beneath the Barrow"

Work: The Lord of the Rings
Characters: Merry, Tom Bombadil
Genre: General
Rating: PG
Warnings: This is based on non-movie events. There are Fellowship book spoilers (the chapter entitled "Fog on the Barrow-Downs," namely), and if you haven't read the book you probably won't understand what's going on.

And I don't own Lord of the Rings... not that you thought I did or anything. The lines of song at the end are taken directly from the text.

This was written at approximately 12:30 AM. It's a bit of drabble which just wouldn't leave my head, so now you too can read it. Enjoy!

----------------------------

He was a Man, a great tall Man, clad in raiment which was strange to him. Heavily covered in armor he was, and a long bright sword was in his hand. Battle raged all around him; the hot stench of blood was in the air. Evil men had invaded to destroy their people and city – the men of Carn Dûm.

He rushed into the fray and cleanly sliced the back of one of the evil men, his blade strong enough to break the links of mail. He spun about, luckily in time to see another enemy rushing towards him. He blocked this one's sword and slashed at him with a yell. The enemy fell to the ground.

He wheeled about again, and suddenly everything exploded into a world of pain as a spear was embedded in his breast. It was the end, the stars were fading above him...

But then Merry thought he saw sunlight again, and an old hat with a blue feather.

Wake now my merry lads! Wake and hear me calling!
Warm now be heart and limb! The cold stone is fallen;
Dark door is standing wide; dead hand is broken.
Night under Night is flown, and the Gate is open!
