I do not own Newsies. The poem is mine. This story is dedicated to an
unnamed foal, born to Unique on July 4th 2004, and taken from her by a
cruel disease on July 9th 2004. Uey, I am so sorry. I wish there had been
something I could do to save him. I'm hurting.

Not Enough Time
I was awakened early in the morning by Blink.
"Mush, wake up. We need to go to the stables. Unique's scared."
Unique was a small white mare that Blink cared for and rode. She was a gentle mare, and had had her first foal a few days before. I often joked that Blink cared for the horse more than he cared for me. Blink just said it was because of the telepathic bond they shared. Like now, the way Blink knew his horse was in trouble.
Blink stared sadly at the frantic mare. He slipped into her too big, empty stall. The little white mare screamed in panic, making a dash for the door. Blink hurridly shut himself in and waited for the mare to trust him.
I looked at my friend comforting the miserable horse. I had always envied Blink's way with the huge animals. Blink always seemed to know what to do around him.
The white mare had calmed down and was in Blink's arms, begging for comfort. For the love that had been taken away from her. Blink stroked the soft white nick and whispered comforting words into her soft ear.
The vet came into the barn. Blink looked at me, pleading for me to ask about the foal for him. I knew Blink. His voice could never hold.
"How is the foal?" I asked. I already knew the answer, though. We all did, but we just had to hear it from the vet to believe it.
"I'm sorry. There was nothing we could do."
Blink let out a wail and buried himself into Unique's mane. I bowed my head, knowing how much this colt had meant to Blink.
"I'm sorry. He was too far gone. He got out of the birthing stall and caught pneumonia last night. He was too young. We couldn't save him."
I nodded. "I understand. Thank you for trying."
I looked back at Blink as the doctor left with the colt's body. Blink's heart was broken, as was Unique's. Their grieving would heal over time, but for now, I needed to leave them together, They needed to spend their grief first in before healing could be done.
I didn't have enough time to know you,
Because you only dropped by for five days.
Did you know how much I wanted, needed,
To learn about you, your mind, your ways?
I wanted to walk beside you and your mom,
As you took your first steps out of the stall.
I wanted to see the look of surprise on your face
As you took in the sky, the trees, the world in all.
I wanted to be the special, the very first one,
To put a bit in your mouth and a saddle on your back.
I wanted to hold you close as you trembled, fearful,
Tell you I would keep you safe, brush you, then untack.
I wanted to be the first that you trusted enough,
To let ride you and feel your explosive power
I would have lovingly guided you anywhere we liked,
I would have protected you from the world, my flower.
But, I suppose, my dream was not meant to be.
Death swept it away as it swept you from me.
I'll miss you forever, my fine, prancing colt.
You captured my heart and kept it behind a bolt.
