Author's Note:

This is a short little thing that really came out of nowhere... I am a fan of Gaia Moore and all of the Fearless Series. Unfortunately I've only read up to book #34. I do not own (wishing and praying that I did) any of the characters. They all belong to Ms. Francine Pascal and I am in no way intending to copy or plagiarize any of her work. Coincidences in writing style are totally coincidental and are not intentional. Please bear with me while reading this story.... It is my first one for Fearless. NO FLAMES PLEASE!

On with the story!

Gaia woke up to the fresh scent of coffee. That's weird she thought. Where am I? Ed's place? No that couldn't be, unless somehow, some weird way we hooked up last night. And of course, it could be a dream, as Gaia's life has never looked to an optimistic field of vision.

It never had and probably never would. Whenever her life took a rare turn for the better, she knew sorrow and remorse, hurt and regret, and the very likeness of death followed. There were so many people that she had hurt, either directly or indirectly. Katia, Mary, Ella, Sam, Ed, Kai, and Mike Suarez (Sam's roommate, but that's another story for a different time and place). It was very likely that if she hung around Jake and Ed, she would place them in danger of the Curse of Gaia, as she liked to call it. Hell, Ed and Jake's life was already in so much danger, and it was all Gaia's fault.

Snapping back into reality she heard the buzzer of what sounded like a microwave. Where was she? Gaia opened her eyes, the stinging retinas, begging to be tucked away again. She shoved the covers off her body, shivering. The air sent chills up her spine. She estimated that it was only around 50 degrees by the way the tile felt against her soles. Gaia quietly crept around the bed, and to the door. She slowly, very quietly turned the doorknob and pulled.

She peered out of the door, and saw Skyler taking the pot of steaming black liquid out of the holder. He got two coffee cups down out of the cabinet and poured coffee up to the rim. He took his cup of coffee out the main room, sat down, and began reading out of a manila folder.

All of Gaia's training and experience in the "bad-guy" field wasn't worthless. She guessed Skyler was reading what looked like a manuscript for something, but it looked similar to a lab report from a medical file. Gaia opened the door farther and walked out to him.

"Oh, hey. You're up. I was just about to come wake you." He said with a little edge to his voice, as he snapped the file shut.

"I'm glad you didn't. You might have needed protective headgear if you had even succeeded in waking me. I am a very sound sleeper, and I'm cranky if you wake me up. Hey, what's with the Antarctic temperatures in here?"

"Oh, sorry about that. Ummm, I, um, am... I'm really warm-blooded and I like the cool air in the morning."

Gaia was left feeling a little uneasy. He stuttered, and sounded absolutely unsure of himself, and that just wasn't him from what she knew about him.

A/N: I know, I know. Not a great starter chapter, but it will get better. I PROMISE! Anyway, click the purple button below and review. No flames yet!
