Camelot Military Structure:

*Note from the Book Keeper: The names used for the Military structures are not the actual ones used during the 6th Century. Rather, they are based on modern day names. Since the records that indicate the true names for these Operational Units are lost to us*

Army (Footmen - Archers - Pikemen - Knights)

1 man - levy (If professional - soldier)

10 men - 1 Section; Led by a Sergeant. Who will be chosen by semi annual Platoon elections (where 5 of the best men are chosen by the 50 men.). A Sergeant's main responsibility is to maintain orderly discipline among the men. They are the enforcers of the will of their Senior Officers. Whoever disobeys with the commands given to the men will be severely punished by the Sergeant.

50 men or 5 Squadrons - 1 Platoon; Led by a Lieutenant. Who is usually the best or most senior Sergeant among the Squad leaders. Their main responsibility is to act as scouting parties for the larger Army they are under. Their composition varies per Lieutenant. For they are allowed to be liberal with their approach to warfare.

250 men or 5 Platoons - 1 Company; Led by a Captain. Usually the best/most senior Lieutenant among the Platoon leaders were promoted to the rank. Sometimes the rank is filled by people who are either recommended to the King for the position by the Commanding General or elected to the position by the Sergeants (Lieutenants can only nominate themselves but not have any say in the elections lest they tamper with the results.)

Their main responsibility is to secure the supply line of the main army. But they are not strictly for that purpose only. They can also act as garrison for captured territories and are in charge of the administration of said territories under their jurisdiction.

500 - 1250 men or 2 - 5 Companies - 1 Battalion; Led by a Lt. Colonel. They can only be appointed to the position through two ways. The first being promotion by the King after gaining the favour of a majority of the military council . The second being that they are chosen for the position by a panel consisting of the higher nobility of the Kingdom. Who were high ranking military officers as well. The procedure applies to all ranks above Lt. Colonel.

This was a compromise King Arthur had to give to the nobles. Who saw the rank of Lt. Colonel and above as their entitlement. But, given enough evidence - like nepotism present in the preceding - the King and the Knights of the Round Table can veto the decision made by the panel and install their own man into the position.

The battalion is the smallest unit to have a staff of officers (in charge of personnel, operations, intelligence, and logistics) to assist the commander. These officers are either handpicked by the commander or supplied to them by Camelot. (Source: Sir Kay's record on the corruption of General Daman during the War of the 12 Lords* {*More on this later - Book Keeper}).

2,500 to 10,000 men or 2 - 4 Battalions - 1 Brigade/ Army; These units have the unique trait of being called Armies in peacetime. Since usually only a handful of Brigades were left after the rest returned to their homes by the end of each war. Due to the politics of the time, having no 'Armies' to defend the Kingdom would put Camelot in a precarious position of being preyed upon by her enemies. So, Sir Agravain cleverly suggested renaming the leftover Brigades into Armies.

"The enemy is dull in mind. But they are numerous. Once they idiotically assume that we are defenceless through our 'lack of real armies', they will descend upon us like the vultures."

- Agravain.

This Unit can return to being called Brigades once wartime comes around.

A brigade is led by a Colonel or a Brigadier General. Usually, when all of the Brig Gen have active commands, Colonels can be placed in for the role. But on rare occasions, the Knights of the Round take command. Should they be assigned by the King. Other than that, they can independently become the Commander of the Brigade.

Whatever reason for their assumption of the position, what is guaranteed is that they have the (implied) power of doing so. Much to the annoyance of the nobles vying for the rank. King Arthur has let this issue of Independent Action - the Knights' name for the act of taking command - slide by 'his' silence on the matter. So the nobles could not press.

The most recent occasion of this instance was the Sack of Wessex. When the forces of Camelot were escorting the refugees from the burnt cities to safety. The 20,000 strong Camelotians had to fend off a force of 32,000 Saxons outside modern-day Salisbury (which wasn't even a place yet. Wherein Sir Lancelot and Sir Percival took command of the 5th and 7th Combat Brigades (called Garrison Armies back then) when the original officers were slain in battle. The second in command of both Brigades were sons of nobles who ran away from the enemy, so the Knight's intervention was more than necessary. It was fortunate that the Camelotians only faced a Scouting Party that day. Otherwise, none would've been left to protect the Kingdom.

The Brigade is the smallest unit to integrate different types of combat and support units into a functional organisation. A combat brigade, for example, usually has infantry, armour, artillery, and reconnaissance units. In Camelot. A Combat Brigade consists of a Battalion of 1000 Knights, 10 Companies of 2500 Archers, 6 Companies of 1500 Light and Heavy Cavalry, 3 Battalions of 3000 Footmen and 2 Battalions of 2000 Pikemen.

Naturally, these Brigades' compositions can vary depending on purpose. But this is what you would see in a normal Brigade. They are divided in this way for effectiveness of command. Archers work well when they aren't clumped together into one force. Rather, they are divided up to cover more ground. Cavalry Companies Need to be as numerous as possible to be powerful. However, due to financial constraints. Camelot can only field 10 Thousand Heavy Cavalry and 20 000 Light Cavalry. While the vast wealth of the Saxons could muster up 60 thousand horsemen total.

Book Keeper's Anecdote : these next Operational Units are only used during wartime. The last time Army Units of this quantity had been used was during the War of the 12 Lords. A war that burned through all of Britannia.

20,000 to 30,000 men or 2 - 3 Brigades - 1 Division. Led by a Lieutenant General, a division contains all the arms and services needed for the independent conduct of military operations. In this period of time, these divisions are mostly Footmen armed with swords and shields, as well as pikemen. Should these two kinds of soldiers comprise the majority of the division, they are called Infantry Divisions. An infantry division consists chiefly of footmen and pikemen but also includes supporting artillery, cavalry, bowmen, and engineer units and has its own communication, supply, and maintenance services.

For the most part of the war, Camelot would use these forces as the backbone of their defence line. They would hold key areas and choke points so that the enemy can't rampage through the heartland of the Kingdom. The brigades within these divisions would

The Knights of the Round Table wouldn't be formed until After the war of the 12 Lords, so the command of these divisions are only of the higher nobility. Some of these nobles would make a name for themselves as stalwart defenders of their King and Country. While some would be shamed to resignation for their incompetence during the war. (Perhaps the Knights did have a fair reason to assume command despite the lack of appointment by the nobles - Book Keeper)

60,000 to 120,000 or 2 to 4 Divisions - 1 Field Army. Usually led by the King or the Captain General. A field army is the Largest single Operational Unit ever utilised during the War of the 12 Lords. It was the largest Unit before the Birth of the Army Group during the Saxon Wars of 532-533.

The field army's role is to be the main force of a campaign. With the Captain General being the brains behind it. The army would take key cities, capture large swathes of territory, as well as finding the main army and destroying it. Basically, the field army is what a Brigade does, but on a much grander scale. Since the victories and defeats a field army would bring could either make or break the Kingdom. And that is where the Captain General comes to play.

The Captain General who leads this army is the most skilled soldier in the King's Army. Since Arthur is the best of the best in Camelot, as well as being King, he's the only one who's ever held the rank. The position can only be filled by Appointment. Meaning, the King has to literally choose you for the role. No interference from the nobles, no majority vote from the court, only Arthur can decide who is best for the title.

Certain Knights of the Round have the skills and experience needed for the job. But they would do better leading in the front rather than from the operations room. The only ones that could hypothetically be the best fit for the Captain Generalship are Sirs Lancelot and Agravain. Should war break out, these two would be the first in line to be chosen for the task. But, given Arturia Pendragon's Character, I doubt that she will allow such a burden to be handed off to her subordinates. After all, should one of these Field Armies be defeated decisively in battle, and either Lancelot or Agravain dead because of it, they wouldn't be so easily replaced. Since Armies of this size and men their calibre would cost the Kingdom a twelfth of the gold in the treasury. Not to mention the decrease in levies after news of a terrible defeat would hamper the recovery of the army.

Cavalry Operational Units.

These Units have the distinction of being the most prestigious amongst the branches of the Camelotian forces. This is due to the fact that Arturia Pendragon is the greatest horseman of the age. Her skills with the sword and lance whilst on horseback is the main contributing factor to this claim. It is through her prowess that the Camelotian Cavalry became the most effective force in all of the Isles. However, due to the cost of fielding Cavalry. The available equipment is old and worn. With few Cavalry units receiving at least adequate weapons and armour. Hence, they are small in number. But this can change to reflect the times. Should war break out, these units will inflate in size.

10 men - 1 Cohort

30 to 50 men or 3 - 5 Cohorts - 1 Squadron

100 men or 2 Squadrons - 1 Troop

400 men or 4 Troops - 1 Battalion

1200 men or 3 Battalions - 1 Regiment
