a.n: For the sake of the short, Gambit left the team because he was aggravated that he couldn't touch rogue. I know it is all abrubt, but I wrote what was on my mind, and that's all there is too it. Just a reminder, if I owned any of these characters, I would not be writing fanfiction.
Control
After Gambit left, Rogue spent weeks curled in a ball on her bed, hidden away from the rest of the team in a self-imposed exile. On the first day of the fourth week, a strong knock resounded through her room, but she ignored it, just as she had ignored the other ones. This time, the knock was followed by a creak. Rogue shot up and stared at in shock at the only person who would bother to come to her, console her, and maybe even help her.
"Good afternoon, Rogue," the Professor stated calmly. There was a distinct light in his eye that warmed Rogues heart for the first time in a while.
"Hello," she whispered. It was that day that things began to change for Rogue. The professor knew what she was going through, the guilt and loneliness that was clinging to her. He had offered her a solution, in the dim light of her dorm. From that moment on, he and Rogue spent every evening working to control her powers. She attacked the lessons with a wild passion, not only for the end result. When her mind was solely focused on her powers, she could temporarily forget about her Cajun.
A year had passed when Rogue entered the Professor's office to work for control for the last time. She was shaking slightly out of fear and anticipation. When she sat in the plush chair, he smiled gently at her.
"Are you ready?"
Too scared to speak, she nodded meekly and pulled off her right glove hesitantly. What would happen if it failed, and she hurt the professor? He seemed to understand her thoughts (though he had sworn at the beginning of their sessions that he would not actually read them).
"I have faith in you."
Five words that Rogue had never before heard in her life. She gulped as he reached out to her hand and instinctively shut her eyes tightly. When she felt his fingers lock with hers, tears rolled freely down her cheeks. She opened her eyes in wonderment and gazed at their clasped hands. Half afraid that she would wake, she let go and yanked the other glove off. He nodded encouragingly as she reached out and grasped his face.
She began to smile, and with a loud laugh, leaned over to hug her mentor tightly. She kissed both cheeks, ignoring the tears of joys on both of their faces.
He followed her as she ran into the rec room, where the team was watching an old movie. Jean immediately stood, concerned at the sudden appearance. Without warning, Rogue launched herself at the telepath, hugging her with bare arms. Scott gaped in shock at the two before letting out a whoop of joy. Everyone stood to hug the bouncy, bright-eyed, southern red-head, who embraced and kissed and laughed without barriers for the first time in her life.
