Apocalypse

A Fanfic in the Sabriel universe by Rabid Lola

Disclaimer: Garth Nix owns the Clayr, the Abhorsen, and…well you know what else.

This is what comes out of studying too much about the Mayan civilizations and their predictions on when the world will end. –shudder- Had to get that out of my system.

…---…

The Clayr knew when the world would end.

Everyone knew it would, someday. It was bound to happen…everything that has a beginning has an end; all worlds created would pass in time, to join the infinity they believed in…The Clayr knew the time would come when the Charter would move once more, and the world created would vanish into it, but not as faceless motes of magic. As beings unlimited at last, individually alive in infinity.

The Clayr knew when the world would end.

She was the one who'd had the vision, as she stared into the iciness of the mirror ceiling, cold and remote. She, descendant of a proud line, her most famous ancestors an Abhorsen, a King, a Remembrancer, and a man from across the Wall. Through the Remembrancer her father had inherited some bit of Clayr blood, reinforced and strengthened by her pure Clayr mother. The proud one, the cool one, and all the Clayr had been surprised when in the middle of everything she fell and screamed, more out of surprise than at the terror and majesty of her vision. And so the whole Glacier knew, and so they faced the frightening dilemma…should they reveal their knowledge, or not?

To warn the people of the impending future…for both sides of the Wall. Would they listen? Would they prepare? Was this what was supposed to be?

Or would the humans try to fight, try to use magic and science and Charter to go against what had to come to pass?

They knew the world would end soon, with no warning other than the day, the moment itself. The ground would tremble and hearts would shake…the fear not because it was frightening but because it was time. The time would come, at long last…the purity of the good would be free and the failed ones who did not try to seek redemption would face the consequences of their inactivity. Death's gates would open and the River rip the seam between it and the world, and all would end.

In the end, the Clayr left the choice to her, the original receptor of the vision. And she chose to tell only one other human, her distant cousin the Abhorsen, because he had to be on hand when the Charter called him to open the gates. She knew her other cousin the King would not like being left out of their normally close circle…but she also knew that he could not know, no matter how good and trustworthy and noble it was. Because it was not supposed to be.

And so the Glacier kept silence, and the time came to pass…the Charter called the Abhorsen, and he opened the gates and freed the river. And the Wall was broken, with a shuddering roar, and the Charter came to claim its own. Thus the world came to an end…and because of the discretion of the Clayr, Fate ran its course.

The Clayr knew when the world would end.

And they resolved to stand and bear the burden for the world.
