The four teenaged boys stepped back from the table in their Gryffindor dormitory to admire their handy work. Spread in front of them was a tangle of folded paper with moving script running across it.
"Can you guys believe that we actually did it?" asked James. James Potter was a tall, somewhat lanky boy with unruly black hair and glasses. He had a tendency to ruffle his hair because he thought it made him even more attractive than he already was. And despite the fact that he thought very highly of himself, he could have had his pick of any girl in the school. But, his heart belonged to a fellow Gryffindor. A redhead with green eyes. Lily Evans. But, of course he would never tell his friends that.
"I know," squeaked Peter Pettigrew.
"How long have we been working on this?"
"I don't actually know Mr. Moony. Since before Christmas I think. Yah, it was over break 'cause we were all tired because of the last full moon. No offense. So we decided to leave that greasy little Snivelous alone. Then that night with our renewed energy from the day of rest we were going to sneak into Filch's office."
"Oh yah, I remember, Padfoot," added James, smiling at the memory. "We were going to let off a bunch off dung bombs. But he showed up right when we turning into that corridor."
"Man, he busted us for nothing. Just because we had the bombs in our pockets didn't mean we were going to use them, right?"
The boys snickered and reminisced about needing a way to be on the look out when they needed to be.
"And then, the Marauder's Map was born. Isn't it beautiful?" Mock crying, Remus Lupin, Moony, jumped onto James' shoulder, knocking him to the ground. Not wanting to be left out, Sirius and Peter leapt into the sprawling mass.
"Okay! Okay! I give up," shouted James. "I'm goin' to bed, we have OWLs tomorrow, remember? I want to be well rested."
"Yah right Prongs. You want to be well rested so you can go suck face with that Lily girl." James threw his pillow at Sirius but still climbed into bed. Thoughts of Lily Evans soared through his mind before he surrendered to sleep.
