As Lexie walked home from detention that day, all she could think about was Mush. Why had this happened? Was this meant to happen? Why did it happen to her and Mush? It could have been any girl or any other guy, but no, it was Mush and her. She kept replaying Blink's words over and over again through her head. "So what you're saying is that you feel that people should be given chances, even though you may hate them right now?" Why hadn't she seen it before? All this hatred she held toward Mush wasn't because she hated him but because she was denying the inevitable, she had strong feelings for Mush.
I mean you always pick on the kid you like right? So it was no different that she was playing the hating game towards Mush. But what's going to happen when this is all over? Are they going to go back to hating each other? Are they going to pretend to be secret friends? Are they going to secretly date? How will their friends react? In some strange way she didn't want this to end but it had to. This wasn't her. This wasn't her life. Through all of this Lexie learned that you really need to look at people through their eyes. See what their life is like. She learned that you can't judge a person until you see what life is like for them, and its then that you will realize why they act the way they do or say the things that they do.
Lexie opened the door to Mush's home and walked inside. That's when she heard Mush's mom.
"Mush dear, Mr. Spadelli called. He said that he needed to talk to you at his house pronto."
"Okay thanks." Lexie walked back out and walked around the lawn towards Mr. Spadelli's house. She walked up to the door and knocked.
"Oh well hello there Lexie, come on in." Mr. Spadelli opened the door to let her in. When Lexie walked in she saw Mush sitting on the couch. She looked over at him and just kind of smiled slightly. Mush of course smiled back slightly. They just looked at each other and finally Mush looked away.
"Well don't stand there dear, have a seat." Mr. Spadelli motioned to the couch. Lexie walked over to Mush and seat down next to him.
"As you probably already know, I have information about my machine. I just completed it and now it's time to see if it works. Now is the time to get your life back. You finally can sleep sound tonight in your own beds, isn't that exciting?" Mr. Spadelli said smiling, but instead of the reaction that he expected, he got frowns. "What's wrong with you? I thought you would be happy?"
"We are Mr. Spadelli. We are just so overwhelmed with joy that we can't express our gratitude." Lexie said smiling.
"Well then what are we waiting for, lets go." Lexie and Mush both got up to follow Mr. Spadelli down the stairs to his garage. Once inside the saw the familiar machine that changed their lives. The machine that brought two people together to join the friendship of a lifetime.
"Lexie you sit in the chair right here, and Mush you sit in the next one." Mr. Spadelli went over and started connecting cords and such to their heads and chest. During all of this Lexie looked down at her feet and didn't even look at Mush. This was what she wanted from the beginning and now that it was finally here, she didn't want to change. She was afraid of what would happen to her friendship with Mush. Mush on the other hand just looked at Lexie the whole time and didn't get a glance from her once.
"There we go. All set." Mr. Spadelli walked over to a switch. Lexie quickly looked over at Mush with fear in her eyes. Mush reached out his hand and Lexie took it and when she did, she felt a sense of warmth, and a sense that everything will be okay. "On the count of three. One, two, three." Mr. Spadelli pulled the switch and the machine started. It only took a second and the whole room went black. When Mush opened his eyes, he didn't see anything. Finally the dust and smoked settled. Scared to look over, Mush slowly turned to see if it really worked. Out of the corner of his eye he began to see her. The girl he hadn't seen for such a long time. The beautiful girl that he fell in love with. Sitting next to him was Lexie.
"Did it work? Did it?" Mr. Spadelli asked.
"It worked." Lexie said smiling.
"Thank you!" Mr. Spadelli said praising himself. "Oh sorry." He ran over and unhooked them. For the first time, they were both happy to feel the sense of their own body and to see life through their own eyes again.
"Well there you go. Your back."
"Thanks Mr. Spaghetti. It's great to be back." Mush said smiling. He ran over and gave Mr. Spadelli a hug. "I better head home."
"Same here." Lexie said following Mush out the door. "Thanks again Mr. Spadelli." They both walked out and approached Mush's house. He just stared at it. It's been so long since he's slept in his own bed and kissed his mother. Slowly he turned to look at Lexie.
"Well." He said.
"Well." She responded. After a while of staring and silence she finally said... "I guess I'm see you in school." She began to turn.
"Lexie, would you like to come in?" Mush asked.
"No Mush, that's okay. I spent enough time in that house. It's time for you to go back. You're mom is wonderful. Now I see where you get your sweetness." She smiled and for the first time Mush was so glad that this happened.
"Well your mom is, well, she's...I see where you get your...umm...well I'm not exactly sure what but...you have a nice house." Mush said. Lexie just looked at him and laughed. "So what happens at school? Do we go back to our regular lives and pretend that this never happened? Should we be friends? What?" Mush asked.
"I guess we'll have to wait and see Mush. Sleep good tonight Mush. Thanks for sharing your life with me." Lexie slowly turned and left to head back to her normal life.
"Well look who it is?" Racetrack said pointing down the hall. Coming down the hall with a huge smile on his face was Mush.
"Big pimpin!" Jack yelled.
"Sup dogs." Mush said smiling. "It's great to be back!"
"Great to be back? You were only gone two days. You know they call that the weekend." Skittery said eating an apple. "Oh look who is coming. Mr. Dick."
"Mr. Goorjian, didn't you learn anything in detention?" Mr. Rick said approaching him.
"Oh was I suppose too? Oops, I guess not." He said laughing.
"Maybe you'll learn this Saturday." Mr. Rick said turning to leave.
"Maybe, but my guess is no." Skittery said laughing.
"So Mush, feel like hitting the pool hall after school? We can do some chick searching." Race said.
"I like the sound of that."
"Hey one eye, I called your house yesterday but your mom said you weren't home, where did you go?" Skittery asked Blink as he approached them.
"Oh I'm sorry Skittery, I was on a date."
"On a date? With who?" Race asked.
"Um, I guess you'll just have to wait and see." Blink said smiling.
"You had a date? With who? I mean I know you were dating Lexie for a while but who is it now?" Mush asked.
"So your back huh Mush?" Blink asked.
"Back in black." Mush said giving Blink a high five.
"Oh look, it's the sluts." Skittery said pointing down the hall towards Chloe-Lynn, Lexington Ann, Rachael, and Randi.
"Don't call them that." Blink and Mush said in unison. They both looked at each other.
"Wait, why wouldn't you want them to call them that?" Mush asked.
"Um, no reason."
"Hey Blink." Chloe-Lynn said approaching Blink.
Suddenly Mush realized what was going on. "Oooh no!" Everyone turned to look at Mush. "You're not dating her are you?" He asked.
Blink moved closer to Chloe-Lynn and wrapped his arm around her. "Um yeah buddy, I am."
"So that's who you were out with last night." Skittery said madly. "You broke a night out on the town with me for, for...her." Skittery said pointing.
"Sorry man." Blink said smiling. Skittery slowly turned and began walking away madly. "Skittery come back, I still love you man. Skittery, don't be such a bawl baby." Blink and Chloe-Lynn followed Skittery hand in hand.
"What made him change his feelings for her?" Race asked surprised. Mush looked over at Lexie who was smiling. That's when he knew she was behind the whole deal.
"Maybe he had a change of heart." Mush said smiling at Lexie.
"Why?" Jack asked.
"Come on Jack, let's get out of here. I smell something fishy and it's not Mush this time." Race turned and headed towards the cafeteria. Jack was right behind. Rachael and Randi turned and left as well, leaving Lexie and Mush alone once again.
"So how did you do it? How'd you break him?" Mush asked laughing.
"Well you know, I sat him down, had a man to man talk, and you know, just cracked the egg." Lexie said laughing.
"Man to man huh, you must have said some really powerful words to him because I would never crack him the way you did. What did you really say to him?"
Lexie looked down to the ground in attempt to hide her face. "Oh you know, I said you really should give people a chance before you start nitpicking at them because you'll never know how much you really like them until you see life through their eyes." She slowly looked up at Mush with a smirk.
"That's it? That's your secret? Why didn't I think of that? I just told him think about the sex he'll get the first night." Lexie slapped Mush's arm.
"That's so not true. She's not like that."
"Yeah okay."
"Yeah okay mister, I can blackmail so badly if you do anything to break them two up."
"Oh yeah, like what?"
"Well I don't know Miss Betty Sue Myers." Lexie said grinning.
"Oh okay, if you're going to go there, I can just post those nude pictures of you that I have."
"Mush!"
"Okay I never did take any pictures of you. Why was I so stupid that I didn't?" She looked at him smiling. "Well I guess I better go. We better not be seen getting along."
"Why?"
"Because it will ruin our reputation."
"No it won't." "I wrote you something." Mush reached into his pant pocket and pulled out a piece of paper and began to read it to Lexie. "I'm not a perfect person. There's many things I wish I didn't do. But I continue learning. I never meant to do those things to you. And so I have to say before I go. That I just want you to know. I've found a reason for me. To change who I used to be. A reason to start over new and the reason is you. I'm sorry that I hurt you. It's something I must live with everyday. And all the pain I put you through, I wish that I could take it all away. And be the one who catches all your tears. That's why I need you to hear. I've found a reason for me. To change who I used to be. A reason to start over new and the reason is you. I've found a reason to show, a side of me you didn't know. A reason for all that I do, and the reason is you." "I believe I've heard those words before." Lexie laughed.
"Yeah well it would have been more meaningful if Hoobastank hadn't stolen my words."
"Oh so you came up with it first huh?"
"Yeah it's right here." Mush said waving the paper in the air.
"Then Hoobastank should have given you credit."
"Yeah anyways, those were my words."
"You just continue to think that Mush."
"So are we friends?" Mush looked at Lexie. He reached out his hand in hopes that she would agree. But instead she did something else. She pushed his hand down and leaned in. Slowly she inched her way to Mush. Within seconds she was right up against him. Leaning in she slowly gave him a short but sweet kiss on the lips. Pulling away she saw the surprise in Mush's eyes and took his hand.
"Oh yeah, we're friends alright."
