Chapter 5: Awake

Midnight was drawing ever closer. Buffy had begun to show some signs of consciousness. She had wiggled a bit and made unrecognizable noises in her sleep. Spike was ever vigilant. he never left her side. When she began to mutter unintelligible phrases, he stood and tried to wake her. But it was no use, so he moved back to his chair and continued his watch.

Around one o'clock that morning, Buffy opened her eyes and turned her head to Spike. Her eyes opened wide as she realized where she was and who she was with. She sat up quickly, but became very dizzy and collapsed back onto the pillows. She resorted to rolling onto her side so that she could look at Spike. She couldn't remember why she was here, but she was about to find out.

"Spike? What is going on? Why am I here? Whoa! Why am I in you bed? What happened?" Buffy was very worried by this point, but was trying very hard to stay calm until Spike explained.

"'Ello, pet. How are you feeling? Do you remember anything before now?" Spike wanted to be as casual as possible under the circumstances. He also wanted to keep her with him as long as he could.

"I don't remember much. I know that I was fighting off a group of vampires, but other that that... I don't know."

"Well, luv. You were fightnin' off six of 'em. By the time I got there, you had dusted three and the others were fighting for their lives. Somehow you ended up on the ground. Still fighting them off. I stepped into the fight and finished two off. The last one had tried to pick you up, but you managed to get a stake in him. When he exploded you fell and hit your head on a headstone. You've been unconscious ever since."

"Well. That's embarrassing. What happened to my shoulder?" While he had been explaining the events, she had been looking herself over. She only had a few bruises thanks to her Slayer healing powers. Except for her shoulder. It was throbbing and had a thick bandage over it.

"I think one of the vamps was a bit excited and bit you. But you must have pulled him off you. There was a big hole in your shoulder, not too big, but it could have been bad. I cleaned it up and bandaged it. It should be better in a few days."

"What time is it? I really should get hom. Dawn'll be worried." Buffy had begun to be aware that she was alone in a crypt with a guy she wasn't too very fond of. She needed to go home, find Dawn and go see Riley. 'Wait.' She thought, 'Riley's gone. He left today, or yesterday? Which day was it? What was today?' She had no idea how lond she'd been out. Dawn must be worried sick.

"It's about one o'clock. You've only been out a day. If you don't mind me asking, what happened yesterday? You weren't exactly on your game or you wouldn't have had any trouble." Spike didn't want to pry, but his curiosity had gotten the better of him.

"It really isn't any of your business, Spike. I've got to go. Dawn must be scared to death." Buffy didn't want to tell Spike about Riley.

"Buffy, please. You can tell me. You know I'll help if I can. But I guess you'd rather run to that soldier boy of your's instead, eh?" As soon as he'd said it, Spike knew he shouldn't have. Buffy's face had gone from worried to annoyed to angry in seconds. "Oh bloody hell Slayer! I had no idea." When had he gotten so insightful?

"Don't mention it. I'll be okay. Eventually. But I really have to leave. Right now. I'll see you later." She had finally gotten her balance and was standing beside the bed. "I'll come by tomorrow and pick up my weapons, okay?"

"Wait Buffy. Let me walk you home. Don't want you to pass out or anything. You'll find yourself stranded somewhere. Can't have that now can we?"

"Spike, no. I'll be fine. I can walk."

"It's no problem, luv. I could use the exercise. Sunrise won't be for another four hours or so. I'll have plenty of time to get back. I need something to do."

"Fine. Whatever you want to do."

Spike stood up and found himself extremely close to Buffy. If either had taken a deep breath they would have touched. Spike looked down at Buffy and stared deep into her eyes. His gaze was so intense that Buffy couldn't look away. She stood enraptured by his gorgeous eyes. There were no tricks in his eyes, no magic powers, only hope. But hope for what she didn't know. He lifted his arm slowly and brushed a stray curl from her face gently. He traced her jaw with the tips of his fingers, but made no other move.

Buffy lowered her gaze and stepped back. She realized that they had not said anything for several minutes. They had just been staring at each other like forbidden lovers. But they were not lovers and neither wanted to be. At least Buffy didn't think so. She had seen longing in his eyes, but she didn't think it was for her. He had plenty of girls, or so she thought.

"Spike, if we're going we need to leave. Now." With that she turned and walked out the door, Spike trailing after her.

They walked side by side without speaking from the cemetary to Buffy's house. They walked up the steps to the door and Buffy found the key right where she always left it under the doormat. She was about to open the door when Spike touched her arm. She turned to face him reluctantly. She din't know what she had expected but it wasn't this. He pulled her close to him and wrapped his arms around her. He held her like she was the last thing on earth for him. And maybe she was.

Buffy leaned into his embrace. she wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him tightly. He didn't expect or hope that she would hug him back. He was shocked but very happy. They stood in each others' arms for a few moments. Then Buffy stepped back and looked up into Spike's eyes.

"Buffy when I saw you fall last night, it scared me. I was afraid that they would get you before I had a chance. I don't know what I would have done if anything had happened to you." Spike had never intended to say any of that. It was the truth, but he hadn't wanted Buffy to know how much he cared.

Buffy was speechless. She had no clue what to say to him. All she could manage was, "Thank you Spike. I really appreciate you taking care of me." Then she turned away from him and opened the door. "Good night, Spike."

"Good night, luv." He stood at the door as she entered the house and shut the door. Then he walked down the steps and back to his crypt to wait out the day.
