Chapter 6: Dreams

Buffy turned from Spike and opened the door. As she walked through the doorway she heard him say,"Good night, love." She couldn't help but wonder what he meant. Was it just his way of saying good-bye or did it mean more? She thought that she would prefer for it to have been only an expression. But she began to doubt her own feelings and question Spike's.

She walked through the house and stopped in the kitchen for a sandwich and a bottle of water. She was surprised at how hungry she was, but then she hadn't eaten in over twenty-four housrs. She made herself a ham sandwich and walked up the stairs to check on Dawn. She turned on the lamp beside Dawn's bed and looked at the bed. Dawn was not there. Buffy ran back down the stairs and into the living room. Dawn was nowhere to be found.

She walked back outside to see if Dawn had left a note on the door, but there wasn't one. She went back inside, very worried by now. She went to the telephone and the little red light that meant someone had left a message was blinking furiously. She pressed the button to play the message.

"Message One... BEEP... Buffy? It's Dawn. Where are you? You've been gone since this time yesterday. Anyway. I'm staying at Willow's. Call me, okay? Bye." Dawn sounded so scared. But she was at Willow's, so she was safe.

Buffy picked up the phone to call Willow's house, but then she realized how late it was. She decided that Dawn would be fine until morning and replaced the phone. She walked back upstairs and into her room. She sat on her bed, ate her sandwich, changed into pajamas, and laid down to sleep.

Unfortunately her brain had other plans. She lay awake for several hours thinking about the events of the past two days. She recalled Saturday, how Riley had called and asked to come over. She expected that they would cuddle on the couch to watch television or just talk. Nothing could have prepared her for him to leave. She remembered yelling at him and crying until she was too exhausted to move. She had fallen asleep and woken up just as the sun set. She remembered how uneventful the night had been. She had killed one demon and then those vampires had attacked. She remembered falling once and hearing someone else fighting off the vamps, but she hadn't known who it was. Then, she didn't know what happened. All she could recall was waking up in Spike's bed, scared and angry at why she was there. It seemed as if it was on loop in her mind.

She began to wonder about Spike. She couldn't help but think about how nice it was of him to rescue her. He didn't have to do that. He could have left her to die, but he didn't. Her imagination began to wander and she thought that maybe he had feelings for her. That wouldn't do at all. She was fairly sure that she had no feelings for him at all beyond a friend. With that thought, she fell into a deep sleep.

Her dreams were very frightening. Not in ascared-for-your- life way, but in a thought-provoking, what-was-I thinking way. She dreamed about strong arms holding her tightly against a strong chest. She dreamed about Riley and breaking up with him. Her final dream involved Spike and herself fighting off vampires, then falling into each others' arms, exhausted. They sat together on a headstone to rest. Then, she awoke at precisely 6:30. She hated her body's alarm clock. It had perfect timing.

She got out of bed and went to take a shower. She was careful to replace the bandages on her shoulder. She chose to wear dark denim jeans, a red tank top with a dark denim jacket and black high- heeled leather boots that reached a few inches above her knees. She pulled her hair into a high ponytail and curled the ends so she had ringlets in her ponytail. She applied a bit of concealer, blush eyeshadow and a pale pink lipgloss to her face. Then she gathered her purse and sat out for Willow's house.

She knew that they would be awake by now. Dawn had school so Buffy would see her before that and explain what had happened. Then, she and Willow would go see Giles at school and they would go to the cemetary to find the demon. Giles would have a fit over Buffy being knocked unconscious, but he's get over it. Then, she'd go to Spike's crypt. She didn't know why she wanted to see him, but she was, so she didn't argue. What could it hurt anyway? Nothing would happen... right?
