Jack walked in to Daniel's office, hands shoved into his pockets. The archaeologist looked briefly up from his work, offering a quick grin as a greeting.
"Hello, Daniel."
"Jack."
Jack wandered over to Daniel's bookshelves, cocking his head and reading the titles. Daniel looked at him, and then turned back to his work. As Jack whistled lightly, Daniel again looked back at him and then down at his work. After several repetitions, Daniel's curiosity finally got the best of him, and he broke.
"Jack?"
The Colonel swung around, looking slightly guilty. "Yeah?" He looked around the office.
"You okay?"
"What?" Jack cleared his throat. "Yeah, fine. Great. You?"
"I'm fine." Daniel spoke slowly, as if speaking to a rather slow child. He studied Jack as he turned back to the bookshelves. He watched for a few minutes more before hazarding another guess. "Jack, did you need something?"
"What?"
"Is there something-?"
"No. No. Well, maybe."
"Alright. What?"
"I need a book."
Daniel looked around, eyebrows rising. "Well, you've come to the right place... depending on the book."
"You know, that's exactly what I thought." Jack turned back to the shelves.
Daniel shook his head and returned to work as Jack puttered around with the books.
After about ten minutes, Jack threw himself into a chair by Daniel and sighed.
"So?" Daniel kept writing, moving aside as Jack began shuffling through papers on his desk.
"Nope."
"Well, what are you looking for, Jack?"
"Uh..." Jack cleared his throat. "Dictionary. Thesaurus. You know."
Daniel frowned and looked over at him.
"Why?"
"What?"
"Why?"
"Wha- Oh. You know. It's nothing." He lifted up a corner of a map, only to have Daniel firmly hold it down.
"Jack? Is this about Teal'c's briefing on Jaffa society?"
"What?" Jack put on his best confused look.
"I know he's been making good use of that Word of the Day calendar."
"Which you bought him."
"What other kind of present would a linguist give?" Daniel attempted to joke, only to have it fall flat. He looked down at his paper and then back up. "Was it contumacious'?"
"Con- What?" Jack's head snapped up.
"Contumacious. Stubbornly disobedient." Daniel made a rolling motion with his hand. "You know... the whole Jaffa rebellion thing?"
"Ah. No."
"No?" Daniel frowned. "Maybe manumit'?"
"Now you're making words up." Jack snorted.
"No. Manumit. To release from slavery."
Jack looked at him with disbelief bordering on dislike.
"Vilipend? Recalcitrant? Impecunious? No?"
"You know, screw it. Not that important. Do you even own a dictionary?"
Daniel blinked at him for a moment before fidgeting with his papers. Jack made a noise and stood up. As he was about to leave, Daniel called him back. "Jack? I think Sam has one."
"Ah, nah. Carter'd kill me if I..." Jack trailed off.
"Oh." Daniel responded before getting it. "Oh!" He fiddled with his pen and then tried to look sternly at the Colonel. "This isn't about that crossword puzzle, is it?"
"What?" Jack spun back. "No. No, of course not. Teal'c. You know. Big words." He spread his hands like he was describing a prize bass. "Big."
"Not the crossword?"
"I'm wounded by your lack of faith."
"Double or nothing, Jack."
"I am aware of that, Daniel."
"It's due tomorrow."
"I am aware of that as well, Daniel."
"I'm just saying..."
"Good-bye Daniel."
Daniel watched as the door to his office slid shut before dialling a number on his phone.
"Hi Sam. Yes... No, he did... So, who won the pool?" He looked at his watch. "About 3:30." He waited, listening to the slight rustling sounds as Sam went through some papers. "Teal'c? Figures. Alright. Pay the winners, I guess." He made to hang up the phone before remembering something. "Oh! Sam? Yeah, me still. Yeah. Can I have my dictionary back now. Please?"
